Anna’s favourite thing to watch on telly right now has to be the Wheels On The Bus DVD that Mum bought for her back in Britain. Whether it is the bright colours, dancing adults or simple repetitive songs, I’m not sure, but Anna definitely perks up whenever we stick it on. I’ve already made an ISO of the disc, to take to Britain on a thumb drive (customs can give you hassle for optical media if they notice it), so we can burn a copy of it over there for her. The 14th of January saw her boogying away once more, so we took a photo and videos (see a post or two in advance of this one).

Take Cover…
Or at least wear something that hides stains really well the next time you are around Anna when she is about to enjoy some pasta and sauce. Regular readers will remember the previous photos of Anna’s mildly inaccurate food placement photos before, but I really think this one catches the moment pretty well. Namely her happiness with having sauce, pasta and meat to eat by hand, without silly Mum or Dad slowing her down, the wide area which such food normally leaves its mark, and also further proof that, despite Anna’s occasional very vocal protests, she really does still need to wear a bib when eating some foods 🙂
Oh, the photo was shot on the 10th of January. Another four or five posts and we’ll have once more caught up to real time posting of Anna’s pictures. I’ll wait a few days though, as the last 1/2 week’s posts take up the entire front page, and I know some friends and family don’t always get around to clicking the Previous Entries link to check out the second page.

Christmas Day Meal
After saying goodbye to Walton we relaxed for a few hours at home with Anna, and then travelled over to JohnA’s for a delicious Christmas Day meal. This was the first year I wasn’t at home in Britain for Christmas with Mum et al, so I was really glad to be in a friendly and happy atmosphere with Anna and Irina. DanD and his family were there, as well as Innessa’s parents, which meant I wasn’t alone in toasting the day with vodka and beer, rather than wine 🙂 The food was great, and we even had some entertainment laid on – you’ll need to wait for the video to catch a clip of that…

When Is a WORM not a WMRM?
I ran up against an interesting (ish) issue this evening. Irina went shopping, and kindly bought back some blank DVDs for me, as I’d just exhausted the previous spindle. Upon inserting the 1st disc, and checking out who really made it etc. with DVD Identifier, I dropped into Nero and was about to start the first burn, when I noticed the speed was set to a maximum of 2.4x, instead of 16x. If it had been 4x or 8x, I’d have just assumed this was due to this batch of discs not being recognised by my burner’s firmware, and so a safer slow speed had been imposed. However, I’ve only ever noticed 2.4x being used with rewritable discs. I clicked through and progressed to burning, where it informed me that my disc (a DVD+R) needed to be formatted! This is a bit like saying your fancy suit shoes needed tarting up, or that your stick insect needed de-worming – it just didn’t make sense. The disc was a DVD+R, not DVD+RW, so formatting was a pointless process. Eventually Nero timed out complaining the formatting process wasn’t possible, and so I tried a second disc, in case there was some sort of manufacturing error on just the one sample. Same problem again 🙁 I tried booting back into Windows XP, using a couple of different burning programs and still got nowhere. After a little searching online, it appears that this manufacturer and specific media type (Ritek F16 (001)) has had problems with other people’s burners as being mistakenly recognised as a DVD+RW. As they burn OK on Ira’s laptop, it isn’t a total loss, but as the files to be archived are on an internal hard drive, I need to burn them via the network, rather than just unplugging a USB cable. Oh, I also checked for any firmware updates for my Sony DRU-860S drive, in case the issue had been fixed by them, but no joy.
[edit]
Ooops. Glad I caught the next problem relatively early. The DVDs that do burn OK on the laptop were only sometimes readable on the main PC. Giving up on that stack of discs 🙁

Sleigh Inspection Time
By the 13th of December, it had come to that time of year where responsible owners check the snow-worthiness of their sleigh. Being a good girl, Anna was happy to carry out the basic checks. Requiring only minimum assistance from a kitten, Anna proceeded to give the vehicle a thumbs up.

Cutting Out The Midnight Lullabies
Last night saw a huge improvement with Anna and her sleeping habits. We have heard from some friends how their little ones virtually sleep right through the night, but Anna has nearly always been one for 3 hour sleeps, interspersed with a good feed. Our friends don’t seem to have dark circles under their eyes, and we have been hoping that Anna would gradually sleep for longer periods under her own steam.
Hopefully last night is an indicator of things to come, as she went from 9.30pm until 5am-ish, with NO FEEDS! 🙂 She was still waking up, but we had decided that another bout of training for her was required. I went in (Mummy=milk at that time of night) if she was crying, reassured her all was OK, told her to sleep and quickly and quietly left the room. I left it 5 minutes, and if Anna was still crying, repeated the procedure. After 10 minutes, if she was still crying, repeated the visit, reassurance and hug if she was standing up in her cot. U then left it 15 mins (I’m sure you get the idea). By the end of the night she was doing really well. There is hope yet for Irina and me to eventually both get a solid night’s sleep 🙂

Happy Birthday Mum
Today is Mum’s xxth Birthday. Where xx=whatever number Mum wants it to be.
We all hope you have a brilliant day, and that John makes sure you don’t have to work too hard.
Hopefully Anna will get a chance to see her Nanna on the webcam again, and we’re all already looking forward to seeing you, John, Gwen and everyone else in just a few months time.

Hey Everyone – I Have Been A Good Boy!
I was speaking with a Russian man this week who was telling me how his son wanted an PlayStation 3 for Christmas. The son explained that he had behaved very well these last 12 months, and his school report had also been commendable. Given these conditions, he was hoping that Father Christmas might be able to stretch to a console this year. The father explained that Santa simply couldn’t afford to get a PS3 or similar expensive presents for every child in the world, and so to try and not be disappointed if he didn’t manage to get one for him.
The child’s response? (The parents split up a long time ago) I was hoping that Mummy’s Father Christmas could talk with your Father Christmas, and maybe get it as a joint present? A very pragmatic, cute and sensitive approach to an issue that can cause stress in other families when it comes to that time of year when you need to find Christmas presents, I thought.
So, Why am I mentioning this here? If your Santa Clauses tend to have problems coordinating matters at this busy time of year, there is help at hand. If when you ask your nearest and dearest for Christmas gift ideas they then hint that they would really like something that is out of your price range, edivvy can help you. Put simply they sell items and accept payments from multiple people. This way the cost can be cut between Mum and Dad, brothers and sisters, or for something really special, perhaps the entire extended family and close friends?
One feature I thought was quite well implemented is should you set up an event with multiple presents for someone, you can assign each gift a priority level. Should the friends and family end up being $20 short of a $850 total bill (for example), you can make sure certain gift ideas for Christmas are purchased first, so the TV could be the first choice, with the Flip camcorder being second. Any money “left over” in the pot can be sent onto the intended gift recipient as a gift card. So, check out the links, see if anything grabs your attention, and try setting up an event today.
