Happy Birthday Con

Category: FriendsChrisM @ 1:09 am

Though you are still hundreds of miles away, know that Ira and I are hoping you have a great day, don’t get too wrecked, and manage to remember the good parts tomorrow ๐Ÿ™‚

Clothes Flowers, Camera, Friends And Gwen

Category: Friends,VideosChrisM @ 11:48 pm

In this video, shot on the 5th of May, you can see the brilliant present that Nick and Roz sent for Anna – a baby clothes bouquet. You’ll need to trawl through May’s posts to see the various pictures of it. We also have the preparations for a photo shoot, where Anna’s little feet were cradled in some big hands, and surprisingly enough, given that this was shot in Clydach, you’ll also see Gwen popping up ๐Ÿ™‚
By the way the camera belongs to, and the main photographer is John, we weren’t using his studio as the garage was too cold for Anna, and the nice man you see in the kitchen is Kevin, who was very helpful, as ever.

Trucked Off

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 11:30 pm

Wow, the whole front page is, until this post, made up of recent tweets. Sorry about the lack of real content. I’ve got a few more Anna videos to post, and a few photos to sort as well. So what has happened since the last real post? Aunty Sveta and her family returned to their home town (most of them went on the train, but my the Best Man from my wedding has bought a lorry, and happened to be in Astana for a delivery. He obviously couldn’t leave it here, so drove it back. At least we know what we can get him for his next birthday, some (semi-(if you’re an American reader)) truck accessories seem quite apt, I especially like the idea of a 12V pizza oven! I’m guessing that this (and the coffee maker) are supposed to be used when not actually driving? Anyway, all seemed well with them, and it was good to see them once more this year.
As mentioned in a previous tweet, we had some friends over for a meal last night, and we managed to save some of the death by chocolate cake for Ira’s parents to try today. They both seemed to like it ๐Ÿ™‚

Big Trucks Mean Big Tyres

Category: Friends,Kazakh Driving,KazakhstanChrisM @ 1:54 am

In Kazakhstan it is that time of year once again, when hundreds of car owners go through the annual ritual of changing their car tyres from the summer variety to the winter flavour – deeper tread and with metal pins to increase traction. In Astana this is essential due to the usual 5 months (November to March) where ice is a permanent feature of the road as temperatures stay well below freezing. When the snow and ice first appear late October/early November youโ€™re always guaranteed to see a cluster of minor accidents due to the ice before the tyres are changed.

For some vehicles however itโ€™s rather impractical to take them down to the local โ€˜Shinomontageโ€™ (tyre/wheel repair and replacement place in Russian). Luckily excavation/earth moving vehicles that are used in mining do not require this procedure, though Iโ€™m guessing they must need replacing occasionally. See prologcentralasia.kz for an example of one of these monster machines and then here to see a bloke standing next to one the wheels, it must be at least twice his height – “Dave I think weโ€™re gonna need a bigger jack mate…”

Posted for a friend that created their site (I helped to optimize a few images that were slowing down the load times), though no money was involved in this post, though a glass of coke might be demanded the next time we meet ๐Ÿ˜‰

Arrrrrrrrrrrgh. Oh, you’re not dressed for Halloween?

Category: Eating Out,FriendsChrisM @ 10:22 pm

So we have just returned from a tasty meal at Sligo, with Walton and Assel. We realised that the last time we had visited the Irish-pub themed location here in Astana, Kazakhstan was just over a year ago, which was another Halloween themed event. Today the fire steak (yes, that was indeed a steak that arrived at the table on fire), chocolate dessert (currently only displayed on their Russian language menu) and vodka were all lovely. Anyway, when we arrived the male waiters had already changed into their themed costumes – scars/pirate paraphernalia were abound. For some reason the female waitress’s costume changes didn’t occur until later on, and were comparatively weak – a ‘bloodied’ bandage around one neck, and a witch’s hat on top of the other lady’s head. I then spotted a woman who caught my eye. I spent a few seconds trying to discern the inspiration for her costume, before realising there was none – she was just a (slightly older than) middle aged woman in tight jeans and a top. Given that I gave the ‘pub’ a plug in my recent guide to Astana, I don’t feel too guilty in calling out her dubious choice of fashion (she is thought to have been the owner), I just wish she’d dressed either more conservatively, or gone the whole hog and added some accessories to her otherwise scary outfit! Anyway, this time there were no signs in the bathroom warning people not to fish in the toilet bowl, which is good, as I’d forgotten our proper camera, and despite the band being worthy of a few shots, as I’d forgotten our real camera (the camera phone couldn’t handle the low lighting), I wasn’t overly upset at the lack of humorous text in the washroom.

Ignore This Man!

Category: Friends,KazakhstanChrisM @ 2:24 am

or at least remember that the video was made with tongue firmly in cheek…

It appears that Lucky’s PC really is dead, I was hoping I’d be able to offer some remote technical support over the phone, and magic some life back into it, but there we go. I guess I was just being greedy, aiming for three in one day.

To those wondering when I’ll stop pimping all his videos, when I see enough of a rise in his subscriber count, or I run out of older videos that I’ve not yet linked to or embedded. Get used to it basically ๐Ÿ™‚

Step Away From The CD

Category: FriendsChrisM @ 2:09 am

One of the computers I previously mentioned had a few problems, which is why a friend bought it over to the flat for me to take a look at. It was slow to start up, even slower at starting Internet Explorer for the first time, and kept displaying dubious warnings about infections. Basically, she had some malware that tried to convince her to buy some software to remove some non-existent problems.
An IT guy had taken a look at it, and advised her to reinstall Windows. The better solution was to remove all the un-necessary start up items, disable the plethora of unwanted IE addons loaded, suggest increasing the RAM from 512Mb to one or two Gb, and to remove the silly program. It was designed pretty well, to the point that even specialist removal tools were automatically shut down at the point of cleaning it, though not at the detection stage. Anyway, all sorted now, and whilst it doesn’t fly along, it should keep her going until she gets some more RAM. Reinstalling Windows is sometimes necessary, but to be honest I was surprised that the IT guy hadn’t fixed any of the obvious problems or suggested more useful solutions.

Mac Users Beware

Category: Friends,PicturesChrisM @ 3:40 pm

A few weeks ago we visited a friend’s flat for a lovely meal, and a few (?) drinks. Whilst I was hovering in the stairwell having a cigarette, I noticed that the entrance to a different collection of flats had an interesting doorbell fitted. I don’t know whether it is good enough to be published on ThereIFixedIt.com or not, but I definitely think it is worth posting here. Although the screws could have been painted over, the idea of using one of the mouse buttons as a replacement doorbell really struck me. Once more, Irina came to the rescue as after a few vodkas, I completely forgot to use the camera, however she took a few shots for me ๐Ÿ™‚

Mouse Doorbell

Mouse Doorbell

It got me thinking that if you had a mouse with extra buttons, you could probably rig up a security system that would only let you in if you pressed the right combination of buttons, and as your fingers would naturally fall on the buttons, and not much effort would be required to press them, you wouldn’t have to worry about people watching you and being able to easily discern the combination. Oh, and why Mac users beware? Because they might get confused which button to press ๐Ÿ˜‰
