198 Hours To Go

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 3:18 am

Yes, just 11,800 minutes, (assuming I manage to publish this post within ten minutes of starting it, that is), until our plane is due to take off and fly the first leg of our trip back to Clydach. We are going via Kaliningrad because of KD Avia’s wonderful reputation for supreme meals, friendly staff and high efficiency they were close to 50% cheaper that the normal routes!

Kaliningrad KD Avia Russia Poland Belarus Lithuania

From there it is on to Gatwick, then John is scooping us up and driving us back to sunny Wales where we can relax, catch up with Mum and Lolik can meet her grandma for the first time πŸ™‚
We’re hoping to go and see Dad and our friends in Gloucestershire sometime the next week, but no definite timetable just yet. As we will be away for six months, we have had to think a lot more about what to pack, and arrange for the kittens and flat to be looked after whilst we are away.
The fact that we will be returning with one extra person (unless the ultrasounds missed out on a twin πŸ™‚ ), means that we need to try and leave space (and weight allowances) for all the related clothes, necessities and presents in the suitcases.

Congratulations To Wales

Category: In The Media,SportChrisM @ 3:45 am

OK, so a score line of 1-0 with the football team you are congratulating being on the losing side wouldn’t normally give rise to a post like this, but when you are playing Germany, 1-0 is quite a respectable result IMO. If you compare the track record of both sides, you can see that managing to not only keep the goal difference down to one, but also only allowing a single goal to be scored in the first place is certainly an achievement. From Stoners To Scanners

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 4:21 pm

OK, so it has taken nigh on a year for me to notice this article over at Wales Online, but I had to quote one section of it…

β€œIt is also a concern that other supporters could be driving home after the game having got passively stoned during the match.”

The piece is on sniffer dogs being used at Cardiff City’s Ninian Park to try and weed out the weed smokers and powder sniffers. I’d love to know just how much was regularly being smoked on the terraces that other supporters honestly believed that they would get stoned. Perhaps if there had been five hard-core tokers, in a non-ventilated cupboard-sized room, not actually inhaling properly, I could see something like this happen, but otherwise? No, I don’t think so. What’s next? People claiming they’d get drunk sitting in a pub drinking orange juice, if others were downing shots? Head on over to KZBlog to read about one excuse that worked… drinking fermented horse’s milk is apparently a good enough get out clause for driving under the influence!
Whilst we are on the subject of milk, check over here for a Lego Milk 3-D Scanner!

Belated Update

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 8:53 pm

As previously mentioned, I’m not exactly in tip-top health still, so please excuse random blips in the posting regularity here. Anyway, I just wanted to post a quick link to the BBC article on the hotel that had refused a room to a soldier now apologising and ‘clarifying’ what had gone wrong.

Cpl Thomas Stringer Tomos
Cpl Tomos Stringer, the man that was (apparently mistakenly) refused a bed once the hotel realised he was in the army.

See the downright disgusting post three below this for the original story, and for a few differing views from this blog’s visitors. Having read some reviews (posted before this all blew up), it looks as though any people who stayed away from the hotel were not necessarily missing out on that much, quality-wise.

Downright Disgusting

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 2:52 pm

[EDIT]
Please see here for an update.

Morning everyone. I’ll hopefully be back to posting regularly soon – I’m almost recovered from a bug/flu/bad cold that I picked up on the flight back to Kazakhstan last week (Turkish Airlines are sadly not alone in the pitiful amount of fresh air (as opposed to the germ-laden recycled stuff) used on their flights).

Anyway, onto the reason I’ve made this post. First, please read this story from the BBC website. A brief summary is that a member of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces was refused a room at a hotel in Woking. Apparently it is the management’s and/or hotel’s policy not to accept military personnel!

Corporal Tomos Stringer

As long term readers of this blog will know, I am not a supporter of the war in Iraq or Afghanistan per se; however, when it comes down to the lives of those individual people who voluntarily sign up to protect their country, I believe we should show some respect. Support the personnel, even if you don’t agree with the politics. I can only guess that the policy of the hotel has come from previous problems they have experienced with squaddies relaxing a little too much. If so, I can understand how large groups of physically fit men who are trained to fight would not be ideal guests. This does not appear to have been the situation in this case though. One lone man, who was on leave from Afghanistan due to an injury, and was in the area to visit another injured soldier friend needed a place to lay his head and rest for the night. Having been refused a room, Corporal Tomos Stringer had to spend the night in his car.

(I believe the hotel is located in the centre of this map.)

I would ask all readers (especially those in the UK) to consider calling the hotel to register a complaint about this incident. If you live outside Britain, but still feel strongly enough, I can recommend using Skype (and purchasing some credit) to call the hotel – assuming your normal phone has high international call rates. This is what I did, and left a message for the duty manager. The lady answering the phone behaved in a professional manner, and I would ask any callers to remain civil and simply ask that their disgust with the management be registered and passed on to them.

The hotel’s phone number is (01483) 727100 , or if you are dialling internationally, +44 1483 727100 . Should you live in the Woking area, and have a few minutes spare to actually complain in person, their address is The Metro Hotel, Gwent House, Crown Sq, Woking, GU21 6HR. There are two different addresses listed by Google, with the same phone number, so I’m not sure whether one is simply a correspondence address.

If your job happens to include arranging overnight stays for staff in a hotel, then I would ask you to consider not using this hotel in the future.

If you do not feel anything wrong has occurred, I obviously respect your right to hold a different opinion, but thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Back Home

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 7:26 pm

I arrived at the airport in the early hours of yesterday. Having been away for a month (the longest my wife and I have been apart since we got married), I have a lot of things to catch up with. I’ve cleared down all the personal e-mails already (if you are still awaiting a reply, please do resend your original message), deleted the hundreds of useless messages offering me dubious medication at cheap prices, and reconnected the portable hard drive I took with me.
Unfortunately I could only extend my return flight to a month from my leaving, meaning I’ll miss Gramps’ funeral on Monday. Our thoughts are obviously with the rest of the family back home. Before I left, Aunty Eileen sadly also passed. Once again, our condolences to everyone effected. To those friends that sent messages, thank you.
We do have some good news which I’ll go into at a later date; this happy upcoming event means Ira and I will be going back to Wales around November time!

Too Much RAM?

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 12:51 am

Nick Boing The Ram, Cardiff In David Palmer's House

Sorry, feel free to think of a better post title and leave it in the comments section πŸ™‚

So why has a photographer placed a huge sheep (is a sheep that is male only referred to as a ram, or can it still be labelled as a sheep?) in some poor soul’s home? Simple, he didn’t… Nick Boing The Ram actually lives in David Palmer’s house. He was found as a lamb in the Cardiff area, and decided not to leave. Before any animal rights activists get ready to start protesting, the family have tried on multiple occasions to re-home Nick to a more traditional setting, but he doesn’t want to re-assimilate. Check out the BBC report for more details.

Good And Bad News For Wales

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 4:19 am

I read a report that back over in Swansea, they recently held a film premiere for “The Edge Of Love”. The movie was partially funded by the Welsh Assembly (via their Wales Creative IP Fund), who invested Β£700,000 in the Dylan Thomas biographical film. You can find a video interview with two of the stars (Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley) here.
Sadly, Wales is also in the headlines for topping the list of underage drinkers in the Western world, at least according to the WHO. Check the BBC article here. The sample size was 250,000 (I’m assuming that is in total, not just in Wales) 11,12 and 15 year olds. 15 year old girls in Wales were the most likely to have experimented with weed. As long term readers will know, I have no issue with schmoking personally, but the fact that so many young girls have tried it is a little surprising.

Benefits From 2012

Category: In The Media,SportChrisM @ 12:28 am

IF the plans come to fruition, the Olympics could have a positive effect on those of you out there who enjoy taking a dip. The plans only apply to England, with different setups in Scotland and Wales, but if you are an OAP, you get first dibs. Those under sixteen get the next bite of the cherry, and then ‘by’ 2012, all people will be allowed free entry to swimming pools. Whether this will only apply to local government run pools, or if private companies will receive subsidies as well, I don’t know, but if this does come through, it is no bad thing.

Family All OK

Category: Personal,WeatherChrisM @ 2:29 am

Realising that the likelihood of anyone commenting on the post re. Britain’s weather any time soon was slim, I decided to check in with Mum & John, Dad and Nick. All were OK, though John did get a bit blown around by the wind. Probably because he went down with another photographer friend to the Swansea coast to see what pictures jumped out at them.

Trearddur Bay Storms Wind Rain Crushed Car Tree North Wales Britain March 2008

OK, so that isn’t actually Swansea, its in North Wales, but I couldn’t find any decent shots right now; John’s will probably be published on his blog sometime soon. Anyway, really glad our family seem fine, hopefully friends are OK as well.
