Fresh Content over at the English Advantage Blog

Category: FriendsChrisM @ 3:21 am

As Walton, the author of the English Advantage blog, is now back in Kazakhstan, posts have resumed over there. He created a post on Slang used in American schools that I found useful, so check it, and the rest of the blog, out when you get a moment. If you happen to be based in Astana, you may also find his business very useful if you have an interest in learning English. Even more so, if you wish to visit America one day, to attend university for example. He has also recently joined up with PayPerPost, so can earn a little extra money informing his readers of useful sites and products.

Post NOT sponsored, the linked to blog’s author is a friend, this post was created for free. Unless his giving me ciggies when I run out count? LMAO

The Iraq, South Africa AND US Americans!!!

Category: VideosChrisM @ 3:18 pm

Thought I’d post a link to a YouTube clip whilst I wait to see if the new resizing method results in a much needed improvement in quality.
Anyway, click here to see the bright young future of America…
Although she has obviously been coached to include South Africa and ‘the’ Iraq in any of her answers. Unfortunately she seems to unable to answer the question regarding how 1 in 5 Americans can’t locate their own country on a map of the world, let alone subtly slip in the required references. I have seen better quality videos of the beauty contest, but the one linked to has helpful subtitles 🙂

Inside Track On Airport Security

Category: Amsterdam,PersonalChrisM @ 3:27 am

With my trip to Britain and Amsterdam now less than a month away, I am starting to try and think about the practical things, such as which suitcase to use, having to pack two bathroom bags, one for freshening up and therefore in my hand luggage, another with those deadly plane downing tools such as nail clippers, bottle with more than 200ml in them, and probably dental floss 😉
Anyway, I found an interesting interview with an American person involved in airport security state-side. Although the majority of the conversation is obviously based upon current flight restrictions placed on planes to and from the USA, the responses and general attitude of the guy were useful to know. Check out the article here.
Oh, and it is now approximately 615 hours until I’m on my way to Centraal Station in Amsterdam, and another four or so on top before I meet up with ChrisD and AlexC 🙂

Forum Behaviour

Category: Personal,VideosChrisM @ 9:52 am

NSFW (Not Suitable For Work), or if you have young children around you – strong language in this video…

Now that you have seen this video, you are probably in one of two camps…
i) What the hell was that about?

OR

ii) That really hits the nail on the head

So, for members of group i), a quick explanation, over the last decade or so, I have spent a lot of time in forums. Sometimes researching subjects for work purposes, other time to learn more about a topic that interests me personally, and sometimes because I’ve run out of sites to visit 🙂 I have been a moderator or admin in a few over the years, and it is unfortunately true that the anonymisation that people feel when typing in a virtual world, rather than face to face conversations, often allow peopel to behave in ways that simply would not be accepted in the real world. A prime example of this can be found at the Amsterdam based forums I have recently been frequenting, indeed this video was linked to by one of them (I think the channels.nl one); some people feel the need to belittle other member’s posts, and will even follow them around from thread to thread, attempting to poke the person until they react. Having created such a reaction, the poker will then often come across as surprised, and ask other members to admonish the pokee.
To members of group ii) – notice any behaviour familiar to that which occurs in your favourite forums?
Just in case it isn’t clear, people will often post a simple comment, especially on blogs and social networking sites that simply states ‘first’ – for some reason, they enjoy being the first person to post a reaction. Sadly, this is all they often post, so hardly worth the effort of typing it.
Others will always be cynical, and claim any interesting photo is a fake – that is has been edited (‘photoshopped’).
One thing that bugs the hell out of me is immature Americans (mostly) who seem to use the word gay as an insult. I would really love to meet them in the real world, and discover what deep seated issues and/or repression has led them to this behaviour.
Although some forums do not suffer greatly from it, you will often still find blatant sexism or teenage like behaviour, to the point that many women simply don’t advertise the fact that they are female, or even choose an alternative male sounding name.
Finally, I really did love the spam and captcha references towards the end, whoever created this video’s concept has captured the issue perfectly.

The Grey Area

Category: Amsterdam,VideosChrisM @ 4:35 am

Not the forum that I’ve already linked to in the past. This is referring to the coffeeshop over in Amsterdam. It is run by a couple of Americans, and although quite small, is a favourite amongst the American tourists especially. I hope to grab a picture of it in just over a months time, but for now, check out the YouTube video by Blueberry…

I have been watching all her videos as I wait for the big opps to drop for PPP’s 1K Tuesday promotion again, hoping to pick up a little more information regarding which coffeeshops are worth finding, and which to avoid.
Finally, we have a video of the apartment they stayed in for Queens Day this year. I think it is about a dozen buildings away from where ChrisD, AlexC and I will be staying. Obviously there is no guarantee that our place will be as nice, but the view out the window should be quite similar, so I’m happy 🙂

Russians Can Afford The Fuel Again

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 10:31 pm

Russia has again started flying it’s bomber planes on long range flights. 15 years ago the practice was suspended, partially due to the thawing of the cold war, but many experts believed that the state could no longer afford to spend money on the jet fuel required for such flights was a more major motivator.
Mr Putin announced the flights would begin again, in response to security threats posed by ‘other military powers’. This is thought to be a reference to the fact that America, amongst others, have continued their long range flights, when Russia stopped. Some have said that this display of power has been timed to coincide with the upcoming elections, as a way of telling Russians that any other choice in political parties would be a display of weakness.

CIA And The Vatican Exposed!

Category: Aware Or Conspiracy Nut...ChrisM @ 4:54 am

Wikipedia Scanner – doing the leg work most of us can’t be bothered to go through…

As you will know if you are at all interested in Wikipedia, for most pages, anyone can edit them. This of course leads to issues when two sets of people have different views on what is reality. This leads to some pages requiring a login before you can make changes. Wikipedia Scanner is a tool that matches already existing information (the IP address of who made specific edits on any page) with the name of the company that own the IP, from a table of reverse look ups, I assume…
Anyway, Wikipedia Scanner shows that the CIA, or more accurately someone using a computer connected to the CIA’s network, edited a page relating to Iran’s president. The Vatican has also been shown to have made changes to a page on Gerry Adams, the Sinn Fein leader.
No word from the Vatican as of yet, though a CIA spokesperson appeared to whimper a little, then trot out the flag waving, are you a patriot or the enemy style …. “I’d like in any case to underscore a far larger and more significant point that no one should doubt or forget: The CIA has a vital mission in protecting the United States, and the focus of this agency is there, on that decisive work.”
Ahhh, so thats all right then

Grannies Get It Right

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 5:06 am

I don’t know if they are famous for saying it here in Kazakhstan, but back in Britain, a common phrase associated with the elderly is ‘the policemen are just getting younger and younger these days’. Well, Thames Valley police force have created a slightly farcical situation that makes it sound like the grannies had it right.
Two 16, yes SIXTEEN year olds are being taken on as Community Support Officers (CSOs)! The regular police force has long had issues with the use of non-police officers patrolling in uniform, but this really takes the biscuit. Of course the Officers are bringing out the line that such young teenagers will be able to better interface with young trouble makers on the street, but to place these 16 year olds in uniform is pure madness, IMO.

The deputy chairman of the Police Federation, (I believe this is the union of police officers, mainly the rank and file, rather than those who spend most of their day behind a desk meeting politicians and local business men), Alan Gordon, stated “To expect 16-year-olds to have the knowledge of life, maturity and judgment to tackle incidents is incredulous.”
It is possible the two youngsters will have the power to to detain citizens until a (real) police officer arrives, protect crime scenes, and attempt to deal with more minor offences directly. The strangest situations will involve those where motor vehicles or alcohol are involved – they could confiscate drinks from people, even though they can not legally buy it, or stop someone from driving a car that they can’t even legally drive themselves. (Unlike America, you have to be 17 to take your driving test in Britain.)

BG Charity Event – Part #4

Category: Eating Out,Friends,Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 7:36 pm

Right, I think I now have all the text deciphered 🙂 This is the last of the posts on the charity event organized by BG (British Gas) Kazakhstan to raise funds for the Kazakh Paralympic team and their trip to the Paralympics next year at Beijing, China.
Throughout the evening, there were draws for the raffle, with prizes donated by local businesses. The worst was a 20% discount card from a jeweller. If I ever discover the name of the company that ‘donated’ some guaranteed business for themselves, I will gladly post it here, possibly with the anchor text ‘Tight Fisted Profit Obsessed Dratsab’ 🙁 Any way, the rest of the prizes were very good, and from the ones I remembered to tap into my phone as we went along, we have a couple of mobile phones, quite a few massages (I am assuming they were of the reputable variety 😉 ), dance lessons, a couple of weekends at a hotel, a few restaurant cards (pre-paid with about $150 on them I think), body spa vouchers, quite a few pre-paid SIM cards with credit pre-applied to them, some month passes for a local gym, a return ticket to Almaty (for one person). In between the raffle sessions, we had a belly dancer. We did not win anything, but unlike the lottery or fruit machines, it was good to know our cash was going to a very worth cause.
Then came the main event (in terms of fund raising) – the auction. This was basically the realm of either foreigners on foreign wages, or Kazakhs who were lucky enough to have a job that paid Western wages. The bidders were very generous, paying more than the item was worth in each case. There was another weekend stay in a luxury hotel here in Astana, and also another return flight to Almaty. The hotel stay was won for 75,000 Tenge (around $575), and then immediately returned to be bid on again (basically a large charitable donation from the first winner), where it then raised a further 55,000 Tenge (around $420). We then had the deputy chairman of the Kazakh Paralympic Committee give a small speech, during which an outrageously rude American group at a table behind us talked loudly all through. If it hadn’t been a corporate event that involved people Irina knew from work, I’d have gladly quietly told the ignorant rude idiots to shut the hell up or take their inconsequential conversation outside. Anyway, the return flight to Almaty sold for 100,500 Tenge (around $775), I think this was also put back in the pot to be re-sold and raise more money for the charity, though I appear to have forgotten to record the second amount. Apologies. Nope, scratch that, I entered the details at the end of my notes. The second time round the ticket sold for 60,000 Tenge (~$460). The ticket was then put back into the auction AGAIN, and resold for a 3rd time, for 51,000 Tenge ($390). So the two auctions items managed to raise around $2600 just by themselves! Altogether, with entrance tickets, donations & raffle tickets also included, the evening raised around 800,000 Tenge ($6200). I will certainly be keeping an eye out on TV for any coverage the Kazakh Paralympic team get next year in Shanghai 🙂

Oh, and just for any hard core cynics out there, this is not a sponsored post, I just see this as being a worthy cause to promote.

Northern Ireland – Good News

Category: In The Media,PersonalChrisM @ 11:08 pm

No, I am not referring to the obvious here (the situation is now stable enough there for the army to change their role in the community, allowing the police to handle all but the most severe of situations by themselves), but instead the fact that Northern Ireland will soon have its very own localized version of Sesame Street!

In case you think I have had too much to drink this evening, check out the BBC article for a little verification…
One of the main aims for the programme is to help educate the urban children about life in the country, for which two new characters will be introduced. With the sad demise of Jim Henson a few years back, I’m not sure who ‘does’ the voices now, but if they mix American and Irish accents from the North, it should be an interesting mix.
