Now that I have my GPS systems sorted for Amsterdam (we will have TomTom Navigator on the PDA, GPS Tuner also on the PDA, and TomTom Mobile and a couple of basic GPS apps on the Smartphone), one positive side effect will be having a navigation system ready to use in Britain, should I end up hiring a car for any of the long journeys. (If it costs the same to hire one as a coach or train ticket, I may well do this, as I have not driven in 9 months, and sort of miss driving, especially in a country where people have at least a semblance of lane discipline 😉 ). What with the speed camera database installed on the PDA, the only other item I could do with is a radar detector to ensure I am aware of any mobile speed detection units on the road I am travelling on at the time. Obviously this would be for interest only, as I never go above 70mph on Britain’s motorways.

Two Weeks Today!
Yep, 14 and a half days, and I’ll be waiting to board the plane from Kaliningrad to Amsterdam. I have checked with the hotel about their luggage storage facilities, and all is OK there. (I can not check into the apartment they own until 5pm, and Alex & ChrisD arrive 4 hours after me anyway.) I have tried updating a couple of GPS related PDA programs, with varying success. As I do not want to risk losing the use of the older versions, I will leave trying to fix the problems (related to .NET Framework issues) until I am back in Kazakhstan, in five and a bit weeks. I am sort of itching to sort the problem now, but I know from experience that if something works, it is best to leave until the need is not there before attempting un-necessary upgrades. Anyway, I need to double check on a few forums that I have made fair and accurate summaries of what, where and how much to spend in Amsterdam, and then make sure the data is replicated across the PDA, Smartphone and real world paper and ink 🙂 No flat battery is going to throw this break into a mess for me 🙂 I discovered that there was no point in checking for Java based GPS applets to install on my Sony Ericsson K700 (my backup phone that will have my UK SIM card in it) does not allow access to bluetooth services through JARs, unfortunately. Given that Alex is bringing her (newer) Smartphone as well, and the installation files I need are on my mini-SD mem card, I guess I’ll just have to survive somehow 😉

ActiveSync Woes Have Ended
Today was a good day for sorting out the various technical issues that have ganged up on this poor PC, this week just ending. ActiveSync now works again, meaning I do not have to re-type all the events on our calendar, nor re-enter all the contact details for friends and family (Most of that data was lost when my hard drive went belly up). I had spent a while trying to resolve the issue, and eventually came across point 17 at this page on ActiveSync 4.x Troubleshooting. The problem beforehand was that ActiveSync refused to sync with the PDA or either SmartPhone, and the UI itself gave an error message referring to MAPI32.DLL. Other sites suggested fixes, though none worked, especially as I was unable to install ActiveSync4.5 to attempt to downgrade or reinstall it. Anyway, if you ever have the same problems, do check the site out. NOT a sponsored post, just hope that someone finds the info as useful as I did today.

Loading Up On Software For Amsterdam – Metro
I am hoping that some of the following titles I discovered will help this blog’s readers with future holidays – none of the links are sponsored, and I will give fuller feedback once I have actually used them all in real life situations…
Anyway, onto the first program – Metro
The concept is simple, and from a couple of test runs, the execution is equally as simple. For most of the major cities around the world, this program has an (updatable) database of the underground trains, trams and other public transport. So, you can enter in where you are, where you want to get to, and the program is set to tell you the quickest way to get there (as in which service, and where to change, if needed), as well as the most direct.
I have downloaded the programs for my Windows based Smartphone and PDA, and they use the same database. This should definitely make life easier in Amsterdam especially, where you can walk to most places, but trams are quicker; you just need to make sure you are getting the right one 😉
I’ll be adding more to this post in the next few weeks hopefully, when I get a chance to check what else is available.

Plus One On The Amsterdam Trip
Sadly, it isn’t Irina who can now come, but instead AlexC is now coming as well. Let me rephrase that… I’m sad Ira can’t come, but happy that Alex is coming. I hope that is a little clearer?
Now there are three people, I’m hoping at least one of us will remember how to get back to the apartment at all times, if my GPS, PDA and Smartphone batteries all die by the end of each day 🙂
Hopefully either she or I will be updating our blogs whilst out there – worst case scenario is we write posts when we return to Britain, but I’m hoping to at least make some sort of draft notes each day, in case my memory gets too hazy.

Phone Bill Sky High?
If you have a Nokia phone, and find strange charges for SMSs to Russia, you should probably install an anti-virus application for you Symbian powered SmartPhone, as an article over at The Register.
This appears to be proof that the malware creators have started to work in earnest on misbehaving codes for mobile devices. Although anti-virus programs have been around for a while, when they were first released, many people scoffed, and saw them simply as another income source for AV companies. Now, the twisted individuals who create viruses, trojans and other malicious code seem to have broadened their horizons. Sad news, but worth taking note of, I believe.

This Week, I Have Been Mainly Using
OK, as promised a long, long time ago, here are all the Plugins & Widgets used on this site. Some links are not directly to the author’s site, as a few domains have expired, or their servers are too flakey to rely on…
About Me – A wonderfully simple, does-what-it-says-on-the-tin widget.
Adhesive – This plugin’s effect will be familiar to forum readers, as it keeps a particular post ‘sticky’ at the top of the page, rather than naturally slipping down the page as newer posts appear.
Akismet – This is wonderful! It has prevented me from having to manually check almost 100 spamming comments so far. There are alternatives, and other approaches, but it has certainly saved me a lot of grunt work…
All Consuming – This is responsible for showing which books I’ve read recently, and which I’m currently reading. I noticed a bug/feature in an earlier release, and the author kindly gave me credit for noticing how to fix the error. This problem has now been solved properly, but it was good to see my thoughts actually helped someone…
Auto-Hyperlink URLs – If I forget to assign a formal hyperlink to an internet address, this plug-in tries to help.
Commenter Spy – not quite as scary as it sounds, just gives me a shortcut to find the approx. geographical location of a commenter’s IP (or more accurately, their ISP).
GetWeather – The 3 weather reports on the right hand side of each page are generated from this plug in.
IM Online – As in I’m online and IM (instant messenger). Shows whether I am connected to the internet with Windows Live Messenger and Skype.
King RSS Widget – WorkInProgress – will edit my post once I’ve used this plugin properly.
King Text Widget – VERY, VERY useful widget. It allows you to basically convert any script or normal plugin into a widget. Currently used extensively on this site, at least until ‘proper’ widgets are found for each purpose.
Manage Me – Makes managing multiple posts/comments a lot easier in the admin area for this blog. (Author’s relevant post used to be found at http://www.stilglog.com/wordpress-plugins/manage-me/ , but site is down, as of 10/04/2009 at least)
No Ping Wait – Currently disabled for trouble-shooting purposes, but this plugin allows me to carry on working immediately after Publishing a blog entry, rather than waiting for a response from each service I ‘ping’ to inform them of a new entry here.
Simple Cache – Prevents identical data from being constantly reloaded. As an example, the weather report for Cheltenham, Swansea & Astana aren’t likely to change every 5 minutes, so this plug in checks the last time the data was retrieved from GetWeather’s servers, and if it was recent, will simply serve the cached data.
VideoPop – This allows me to post videos with a simple pop-up player, rather than requiring people to know too much about file types etc.
WhoLinked – Displays which sites link to this one.
Word Stats – This allows you to easily post (& automatically update) the vital statistics of your blog. It can be downloaded from Google.
Zap_NewWindow – This one makes sure that if a reader clicks on a link in one of your posts, the site will open in a new window, so you don’t lose the reader. There is an annoying pop-over ad at his blog right now – close it, then close the new window/tab to see the real text.
Sidebar Widgets – Without this, none of the widgets mentioned above would work!
The theme currently used on this blog is Ainslie Johnson’s Chameleon 1.1.
Oh, and btw, this post’s title refers to a Fast Show quote, in case it makes no sense to some people…
[EDIT]
OK, having compiled this list, I remembered a couple of things I wanted to try out, so you can now add the following two to your list of things to check out if/when you have a WordPress blog…
Inline Ajax Comments – This means you can check the comments on a post without leaving the main page. Took me a while to trouble shoot the insertion of two simples lines of code. I finally realised that the ‘Show Comments’ text would only actually appear under posts that already had a comment! (Used to be found at http://kashou.net/blog/inline-ajax-comments/ , currently the whole site just appears to bring graphic up)
WordPress Mobile Edition – Trying to view this blog on a PDA or SmartPhone just takes too long (GPRS speeds not being that great in Kazakhstan at least) & results in a difficult page to navigate (even with a good browser like NetFront on a PDA), so I decided to give this plugin a try. It seems to work like a charm, picking up both IE & NetFront on the iPAQ…
[EDIT2]
24/2/07 Update
Do Follow – Allow commenters own sites to get the juice they deserve :>
PostPost – A way of automatically adding content (in my case adverts) after your posts. (Also has a lot of other options available)
WordPress Related Links – I’m still not 100% on whether to keep this one or not. It adds links to related sites at the end of my posts. Will have to monitor sometime, and check it isn’t just earning someone else a lot of money from my drivel :>
Google Sitemaps – I’ve had this installed since the first day this blog existed, but never got round to using it for some reason. As I had to re-create all my article web sites, and so re-submit their site maps, I decided to give this plug in a go.
Cloudy – Finally, a plugin & widget that does what I need, without having to remember to edit some PHP next time I wipe a file accidentally. The word cloud you can now see on the right, in the second column, is the result.
