All Pigs Primed And Ready To Fly!

Category: Kazakhstan,PicturesChrisM @ 8:09 pm

The following letter/advice sheet was stuck to our block’s doors earlier in the week, and whilst I haven’t asked Irina to translate it all, the advice given does seem to be sensible, well proportioned and in general good to see being produced by the authorities over here.

Official (Sensible!) Advice Re. Swine Flu In Astana

Official (Sensible!) Advice Re. Swine Flu In Astana

Hmm, pigs with wings to be seen soon? (Me praising government output…)

I’ll try and remember to ask Ira a summary of the info for non-Russian readers later. Pizza and Heroes series 3 first ๐Ÿ™‚

Russian Rhymes

Category: Anna's Photos,PersonalChrisM @ 5:55 am

Yes, another post where WordPress decided the built in gallery function really wasn’t required here, thank you very much. Anyway, 11th July saw us at the in-laws’, and by looking at the photo with Anna’s Babushka (Ira’s Mum) some Russian nursery rhymes or fairy tales being read to her.

Not Very Tolerant Police

Category: Anna's Photos,Kazakhstan,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 4:22 pm

OK, slightly dramatic post title, given that all the policemen did was refuse to allow us access to the park whilst the International Religious Tolerance Conference were being entertained near the entrance, but it did add an extra half hour or so to our attempt to get into the park with Anna. They were at least very polite, rather than gruff and menacing, as I had expected some of them to be.
Anyway, we walked around (once we’d found a side entrance not guarded) whilst preparations for Astana Day carried on in the park, but don’t worry, no repetitive yurt shots this time ๐Ÿ™‚ We had previously only caught the very end of some acts that had an area set aside for them within the park. Whilst my Russian wasn’t very good that day, I could tell when the performers’ MC had asked for any donations into a hat, as a lot of people who had previously been enthralled suddenly discovered what the time was, and had to make a sharp exit. Anyway, this time we were lucky, as despite our detour, we didn’t miss much of the show. The acts were all from Uzbekistan I think, with the old guy on the tightrope easily having the most charisma, even from 30 foot up in the air, dancing away and smiling at everyone, he was definitely a seasoned performer. Enough of the wittering, onto the pictures… (Oh, click the link after the first few pics to see more, if you’re viewing this post on the front page.)

Visitors, Straddling New White Lines, Posters and Yurts

Category: Kazakh Driving,KazakhstanChrisM @ 5:50 pm

You can definitely tell that there are foreign visitors about to arrive in Astana (there is the “III (I’m assuming that means 3rd?) Congress of leaders of world and traditional religions” – you can normally tell when a phrase is directly translated into English from Russian, rather than re-worded to sound more natural). The white lines on the roads are re-painted, even car parks get neat new spaces clearly marked out. Any billboard posters with our beloved president’s face on tend to be replaced (at least temporarily) with normal business adverts, or motivational ‘Astana city for the future’ type messages. You can tell when the big wigs have actually arrived though, as you’ll spot a lot more policeman at traffic junctions, sometimes ‘helping’ the flow of traffic by turning off the lights, other times ensuring that as a VIP’s car cruises down the road that no other traffic is met. The easiest way to tell when a VVIP is around? The motorcades get to drive on the wrong side of the road, with scores of cars, ambulances, motorbikes and 4x4s flanking the actual limo.
Anyway, we’re off in a moment to get and inspect the progress of the preparations for Astana day in the park opposite us – there are a lot more yurts there now, on raised platforms, and they seem to be making progress with the huge scaled up yurt in one corner. We have already taken a few pictures of the erecting process for yurts, and the mock castle walls at the pedestrian entrance to the park, I’ll try and post them soon.

Old Friends Pop Round

Category: Anna's Photos,Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 3:11 am

A couple of days after we arrived, Walton and Assel came to visit us at the in-laws (where we lived until our flat could be sorted out properly in terms of re-decoration, hot water etc.) It was great to see them both after one day shy of six months (17th May).
So, we have a shot of Anna on the floor in some dungarees, Anna with Asel (I’ll hedge my bets and spell it with one S this time) and then Walton, and finally a quick picture taken with her Great Grandmother (I think the Russian is something like old-grandmother!)

Anna Christina Merriman Photos – Last Batch For Today

Category: Anna's Photos,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 4:38 pm

Today we went to Swansea’s County Hall/Civic Centre, to see the Registrar and officially registered the birth of Anna Christina Merriman. Her middle name is a suitable mixture of Christopher and Irina, which is close to what her patrynomic name would be in Russian. Hopefully the Kazakh red tape guardians will accept this as a suitable choice, and won’t complain.

These photos were all taken around the time Mum showed Ira and I the best approach to bathing little Anna, and we’ve since done this solo without any major mishaps. Irina was a little apprehensive about full on bathing (as opposed to topping and tailing) and safety, so I explained that if the bath shifts around, or looks likely to shoot off the surface its laid on, hold the baby, and forget about trying to stop the bath from falling – as long as Anna is safe and secure, no is going to give a damn about a little spilt water. A case of not throwing the baby out with the bath water ๐Ÿ™‚

xn--j1aaavekek6ad3ame – Great Domain Name?

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 4:13 pm

So why on earth would I consider registering the domain name xn--j1aaavekek6ad3ame.com ? If you type the current domain name for this site with a Russian keyboard layout on a UK QWERTY laptop, the Cyrillic characters produced equates to xn--j1aaavekek6ad3ame. OK, so minimal drive by traffic involved, obviously, but it would make my life easier to have a redirect on there, rather than have to retype when I forget to flip back to a UK layout ๐Ÿ™‚

One Small Shelf For A Man

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 9:31 pm

One giant space for baby clothes… So, the changes have begun in the bedroom (no sniggering at the back there…) After washing all the clothes, Irina has started to put them away in our bedroom, which means hiding away some of our clothes, and creating a space for Lyolik’sยง clothes. Luckily, hers tend a to be a tad smaller than ours, so sacrificing a little space still makes a big difference.

ยง – In case you haven’t been following the blog recently, Lyolik is a ‘pet’ name for our baby, whilst she is still inside Ira, and doesn’t really exist as a name normally. A Russian version of ‘cute little human, who we’re really REALLY looking forward to meeting soon’ if you like ๐Ÿ™‚

198 Hours To Go

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 3:18 am

Yes, just 11,800 minutes, (assuming I manage to publish this post within ten minutes of starting it, that is), until our plane is due to take off and fly the first leg of our trip back to Clydach. We are going via Kaliningrad because of KD Avia’s wonderful reputation for supreme meals, friendly staff and high efficiency they were close to 50% cheaper that the normal routes!

Kaliningrad KD Avia Russia Poland Belarus Lithuania

From there it is on to Gatwick, then John is scooping us up and driving us back to sunny Wales where we can relax, catch up with Mum and Lolik can meet her grandma for the first time ๐Ÿ™‚
We’re hoping to go and see Dad and our friends in Gloucestershire sometime the next week, but no definite timetable just yet. As we will be away for six months, we have had to think a lot more about what to pack, and arrange for the kittens and flat to be looked after whilst we are away.
The fact that we will be returning with one extra person (unless the ultrasounds missed out on a twin ๐Ÿ™‚ ), means that we need to try and leave space (and weight allowances) for all the related clothes, necessities and presents in the suitcases.
