Strike A Pose

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 4:45 am

As avid readers may remember, my brother is shortly off to Australia with his lovely girlfriend (Happy Birthday again 🙂 ) and her mum. With impressive foresight, he has been asking people what they want for Christmas, so the two of them can try and sort out all the pressies now, rather than rushing around like headless chickens when they return to the UK, just a few days before Xmas itself. I would have been tempted to use the trip as an excuse, and wait for the New Year sales to pick up some bargains, but Nick has a more mature outlook already I guess 😉
Anyway, I’ve been struggling to find something I’d really like, and having asked for contributions to charity for my birthday earlier in the year, I have to admit my selfish side is rearing its head, and wanting to have something to unwrap this December.
Something I noticed over at buy.com was a pretty high quality webcam, which has a number of attention grabbing features. Primarily, the $30 rebate on an already competitive price obviously caught my attention, although the Carl Zeiss lens (as used on many top end Sony digital cameras) is pretty important for those of us hoping for a little more than the traditional grainy, blurred video provided by older webcams.

Logitech QuickCam Orbit Buy.com

I’m not sure whether the face tracking software included would be a useful addition, or simply a toy to play with, but the ability to pan and tilt the camera from your PC is a definite boon. Although not apparently a built in feature (yet?) I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t be too difficult to bodge up some code in conjunction with remote software, so you could scan around your room whilst in another house or even country! Anyway, I’ll need to check a few other details before considering the purchase (by proxy 🙂 ), but even if this webcam doesn’t end up on my wish list, there are enough other products at buy.com to keep day dreaming for a good long time to come…

Looking Nothing Like…

Category: Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 3:04 am

OK this post has a LOT of Flash objects and pictures contained within it, so if you are reading this text from the main page, either click the post title or the link just below to see the rest of the post. If I hadn’t done this, the home page would have taken minutes to load, at least for those of us without decent internet connections…

Too Much RAM?

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 12:51 am

Nick Boing The Ram, Cardiff In David Palmer's House

Sorry, feel free to think of a better post title and leave it in the comments section 🙂

So why has a photographer placed a huge sheep (is a sheep that is male only referred to as a ram, or can it still be labelled as a sheep?) in some poor soul’s home? Simple, he didn’t… Nick Boing The Ram actually lives in David Palmer’s house. He was found as a lamb in the Cardiff area, and decided not to leave. Before any animal rights activists get ready to start protesting, the family have tried on multiple occasions to re-home Nick to a more traditional setting, but he doesn’t want to re-assimilate. Check out the BBC report for more details.

Bury Mayor Plan Rejected!

Category: Friends,In The Media,PersonalChrisM @ 3:05 am

Am the only person who would misinterpret the journalist’s story, when reading that headline? Although the article itself has the word elected inserted between Bury and Mayor, the RSS feed last week definitely had it missing. Perhaps a deliberate ploy to get people to view the page. Maybe I should try the same 😉
Oh before I forget, Natalya is back home, my brother Nick has managed to get a job (congratulations) and Alex is leaving on holiday soon.

Congratulations To Nick

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 4:26 pm

My brother phoned yesterday to let me know he had his results from his degree in Journalism – a 2:1 !
I’m hoping he has started to sober up by now, but from everyone here in Kazakhstan, WELL DONE
🙂

Congratulations

Just spoken to Nick, and Roz also got a 2:1, so looks like everyone did well 🙂

Based On An ISP Theme

Category: Internet ConnectionsChrisM @ 2:16 am

The recent comment flurry over at the Broadishband Got Narrower post reminded me I had a few bookmarks ready to post news about ISPs back in Britain. Read on if you have a moment…

I thought I had already written a couple of posts about the Phorm scheme in Britain, but I can’t find any reference searching through the last few months. Anyway, the idea is relatively simple, internet users have their site history (anonymously) analysed to ensure that adverts displayed are relevant to their interests. Whilst BT, and other ISPs, have stated that certain topics will be excluded (medicine, adult and political-orientated sites I believe), many people and organisations are very concerned at the possible privacy issues. Anyway, BT are a little uncomfortable, as an internal report revealed that trials were carried out without the consent of the ISP’s customers. Check out here for more info.

Sticking with the ISP theme, here we have one article on the proposed voluntary code for ISPs when advertising their speeds and data limits. In Britain, many ISPs used to advertise ‘unlimited’ 8Mbit connections, with users eagerly signing up. When these same users found connections sometimes around the 3-4Mbit range, and their downloads either blocked due to AUP (Acceptable Use Policies) or their PeerToPeer applications’ bandwidth throttled (or ‘shaped’), people began to complain. To be fair, unless you live IN the local telephone exchange, you will never get an 8Mbit connection when the account is for ‘up to’ 8Mbit, and if every customer was downloading movies (public domain ones only of course) 24/7, either everyone’s speeds would suffer, or the ISP would have to invest in so much hardware that prices would inevitably rocket. All most consumers want (those that have a clue about the reality of the industry at least), is plain English to be used in any communications from the ISP, clearly stating what approximate speed can be expected, and just how much data can be downloaded per month, without incurring restrictions.

Finally, we have a report stating that Britain’s internet infrastructure needs to be intelligently upgraded, for the economic and social benefits to be reaped soon. Although Japan and a few Nordic countries already have widespread <100Mbit trials or even standards in place, Britain has stopped around the 24Mbit mark, and even then if you don't live in the right area, 8Mbit is the theoretical ceiling (possibly LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) related?). Compare that to the speeds found in Kazakhstan, and you could easily ask what people are getting their knickers in a twist about, but the cold hard truth is that if the UK wants to stay at the front of the line, when it comes to enjoying the benefits of next-gen technology, it can't afford to faff about forever arguing over costs and timescales. (Orchestral Movements in the Dark's song Dream of Me (Based on Love's Theme) for some reason was in my head when I was trying to think of a post title, in case anyone cares about the root of it).

Inferior vs. Lucky Underwear!

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 11:12 pm

Inferior Boxer Shorts vs. Lucky Knickers

Firstly, we have respected Newsnight presenter, Jeremy Paxman, complaining that Marks & Spencer’s normally reliable lines of underwear has seen a marked decline in quality recently. Apparently, ‘Their pants no longer provide adequate support’! He also complained that M&S’ socks were getting holey far too quickly. Now the question is, are Jeremy’s toes getting too old and gnarly, or should people start shopping around for better brands?

Secondly, we have Mrs Marsey’s potentially life saving knickers. Some younger members of her family were attempting to fry some food, and didn’t initially notice when the fire started. Thinking on their feet, her nephew and son grabbed some of her underwear, and proceeded to suffocate the flames in time. Check here for more information.

52 Gun Metal Pearls for Alanis Nickel?

Category: VideosChrisM @ 3:46 am

My thanks to Kate, over in Gloucester for the heads up on this video. If you haven’t come across Tim Hawkins before (I certainly hadn’t), spare five minutes to listen to and watch this video. The impersonations are pretty spot on when it comes to famous musicians, and the video (created by ‘Burnin8r55555’ – now theres a name you might just mistype…) is a pleasant enough accompaniment to it.

It reminded me I seriously need to improve my music library, I couldn’t find anything other than a few tracks by Pearl Jam for starters.
One of the problems some people have when impersonating celebrities is that they can only really mimic a certain singing style or accent, but the range of music and delivery styles was pretty impressive 🙂

How Not To Travel

Category: Amsterdam,VideosChrisM @ 9:45 pm

Thanks to a member over at an Amsterdam forum for this video…

I can’t work out if the cigarette the skipper smokes at the end is just tobacco, or with a relaxant added, and whether she is drunk whilst on the canal, or just nervous? I do love her reasoning that it was the weather that caused problems. Anyway, we’re hoping to catch a St. Nick’s boat club trip on the canals this April, we’ll let you know how it goes.
