Martin Eden

Category: BooksChrisM @ 1:27 pm

Martin Eden – Jack London

This is definitely a book for budding writers to read and try and take some heart from. The main character is actually a sailor, who sees a particularly one-sided unfair brawl starting. He steps and saves the honour, and possibly life, of a well to do young gentleman. As way of thanks, the gentleman invites the sailor over to his parents’ house for a nice meal.
Although Martin has an active brain, and enjoys learning more whenever he can, he feels out of place in high society, and his discomfort is not helped any when the sister of the man he saved turns out to be a charming, beautiful young lady.
Determined to better himself, Martin sets out to better himself, learning as much as he can in Maths (that is Math to my American readers ;>) and grammar, and hopes to go on to start earning some money, and respectability by writing books. He suffers a great deal of rejection, in both the literary and romantic sense, but perseveres.

Despite being written nearly a century ago, I found the style to be very readable, and could happily recommend to this anyone in need of a good book to read.

Avoiding Bad Puns

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 1:21 pm

Wednesday night, Ira and I met up with a journalist (socially) who is based in London. She found this blog from the posts on our kittens and the fact it mentions Kazakhstan, and as she was over here again for a story (I’ll post more when I know she has had it published) decided to meet up.

Elizabeth Mistry

We went to the Chelsea pub (yep, that bastion of traditional Kazak cuisine, lmao), and had a nice evening eating, drinking and talking a fair amount. The temptation of seeing Karra and Muska proved irresistible, so we all came back to the flat afterwards. It was really interesting to meet her, and I hope should she come out here again, we’ll meet once more. Oh, and her husband is cordially invited too, so lets just hope she succeeds in her mission to persuade him to visit Kazakhstan.

Oh and the post title? Her name is Elizabeth Mistry, so I had to fight the urge to create a corny title…

Cheltonian Chastised

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 2:33 am

Matt Parker, who is from Cheltenham, created a website to assist people in London rent their homes out to visitors during the upcoming Olympic games. However the organising committee of the 2012 London Olympic Games have threatened him with legal action, citing the fact that he is using the Olympic brand without permission and is not an official sponsor.
He stated “It’s me and my website and I hope they reconsider and take a more lenient stance”.
Not wishing to lose the site, and presumably some sort of income it generates, he has modified relevant sections of the site.

Fair play for coming up with the idea, but not too surprising his knuckles were rapped if he attempted to associate the site with the Olympics in any way.

Neverwhere

Category: BooksChrisM @ 5:50 pm

Neverwhere – Neil Gaiman

OK this is the last of Gaiman’s novels that I’ve read so far, and after doing a little research prior to writing this review, I discovered that this book was quite unusual in its creation… A animated TV series was written first (by Gaiman and Lenny Henry of all people!), and then this novel was written afterwards. Quite shocking, as I’ve previously found that most books FROM TV series suffer in one way or another.

Anyhow, this story revolves around a lower London, where nothing is as it seems to those that get to glimpse a change from their normal lives above. Richard, the main character decides to help out a bleeding homeless girl on the way home, and from that point on, things get a little twisted. If you don’t enjoy fantasy books, then skip onto something else, but I found myself reading this whenever I had a spare moment, and almost a little saddened when I reached the end.

Might have to check in the shops next time I’m in Britain, see what the animated TV series was like in comparison… Anyone else seen it? 1997 I believe…

Anansi Boys

Category: BooksChrisM @ 3:55 pm

Anansi Boys – Neil Gaiman

Following on from two other reviews of Neil Gaiman’s books (Stardust and American Gods), we have another trip in the fantasy worlds in the authors mind.

More similar to American Gods than Stardust, this book’s God universe focuses on African deities this time, although the ‘real-life’ backdrop is equally as compelling in this novel. We start off with a ‘normal’ man in London, part of the corporate back-stabbing world, and not highly enjoying it. However, he is to be married soon, and so things could be worse. Deciding to invite his father (with a little prodding from his fiancée) who he hasn’t spoken to in years, he attempts to make contact. Sadly his dad has died, and so he drops everything to fly to America to see to the required arrangements. Strange tales are abound over his family’s history, and he is shocked to be told he has a brother!

There seems to be some confusion over the relationship between this book and American Gods. Although a couple of characters do exist in both novels, they seem more like companions than pre/sequels.

Brits Getting Raw Deal With Cars

Category: In The Media,PersonalChrisM @ 9:23 pm

According to an article on ThisIsLondon’s site, motorists in Britain are near the bottom of the pile, when it comes to anti-skid technology in cars they buy – both as standard kit, and even just as an available ‘extra’.

I’ve only ever had a few accidents at over 5mph, but I certainly wish I could have had a little artificial help when I have hit other objects in the wet or at high speed. I’m still amazed Seb & Con were happy driving with me after a little prang with a car near a petrol station. Better than walking back to Cirencester I guess ;-P

Anyway, it turns out car buyers in Eastern Europe & Scandinavian countries are finding the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) equipment is fitted as standard a lot more frequently than us un-lucky Brits…

Flights And Visas

Category: Friends,KazakhstanChrisM @ 2:11 pm

ChrisD managed to get a corking deal by visiting MajorTravel.co.uk

You’ll probably want to search for London Airports to TSE (Tsleningrad, old name of Akmola, which is the old name of Astana)

Their phone number is 020 7393 1070

You may well find better deals than through this company, but ChrisD’s total fare was below 300 pounds, which we’ve never managed to get before. (He is flying at a less popular time of the year though, don’t be surprised if your fare is 33% to 100% more, depending on how flexible you are about the month you go.)
The embassy don’t mention how long it will take to process a request for a visa, last time I did it, it took them two weeks. Might be best calling them to confirm the current estimated time frame.
Anyway, try to leave AT LEAST 2 or 3 weeks spare between expected visa in your hands and flying – if they need clarification, it might require resubmitting a new form, or even popping to the Embassy in London. (Had to do that before, not difficult to find it and they spoke English). Shouldn’t need to go there, but just in case, thought it was worth mentioning. There is a tube station with 5/10 mins walk of the office.
Don’t forget you’ll need your passport in your hands before you can send off form with it!

Documents required for Visa:

Letter of introduction explaining the purpose of the visit. See below for a rough draft. The missing info is indicated in red. Feel free to re-phrase it, if you wish.
Application forms, fully completed and signed by the applicant. The form (as of 19/07/2006) is attached. See some of the answers for the form are below
Valid passport with one full blank page to affix the visa (please note that the passport must be valid for at least six months after visa’s expiration date)
One passport sized photograph (We normally wrote the name on the back and stapled it to the form)
Self addressed and prepaid envelope, special delivery or registered post only.
VISA FEES (to be paid by cheques or postal orders made out to “Kazakhstan Embassy”, maybe put your passport number on the back of the cheque) – PRIVATE VISA SINGLE ENTRY up to three months visa – 33GBP

Send the above documents to:
CONSULAR SECTION OF KAZAKHSTAN EMBASSY
33 THURLOE SQUARE
LONDON, SW7 2SD

If you need to contact Embassy:
TEL: 020-7581-4646
OPENING HOURS: 9:00 – 12:00
(MONDAY TO FRIDAY, EXCEPT WEDNESDAYS, WEEKENDS AND PUBLIC HOLIDAYS)

Their web site address (well the section you need) is www.kazakhstanembassy.org.uk/cgi-bin/index/92

Answers to some of the questions in the application form (download from the link above):
It would be simple to print out the form and fill it in by hand, as to do it on a computer is a pain; it’s definitely not been designed for filling in electronically.

In case form isn’t too clear, the info you need to put in that you don’t already know is:

17. Purpose of travel: Private
18. Inviting organization (address, tel.): N/A
or person, arranging your visit to Kazakhstan (full name, address, tel.): e-mail us for this info – not going to publish on web :>
19. Places of destination in the Republic of Kazakhstan: Astana
20. The first place of entry into the Republic of Kazakhstan: Astana
21. Temporary address in Kazakhstan: See #18
22. Who is paying for your cost of travelling and for your costs of living during your stay in Kazakhstan?: myself

Re. Expiry date on visa – put a longer date in for the end of the visa, just in case any emergencies arise, its best to have a few days comfort-zone left after you should have officially left the country.
(MAKE SURE THE END DATE IS STILL WITHIN ONE MONTH OF ARRIVAL, OTHERWISE YOU WILL NEED A DIFFERENT, MORE EXPENSIVE VISA)

Reaching Bandwidth Limit

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 1:17 am

Looks like people were hard coding links to my BBC News Borat London Premier vid hosted on this site :< , rather than the original post, so I've removed the file, as I'm rapidly approaching the limit for this month (the video is still accessible from the first link though). If people read this message, and then can't access the site, it will return next Wednesday…

BBC World Report On the Borat film

Category: In The Media,Kazakhstan,Personal,VideosChrisM @ 11:02 am

This is a little video clip surrounding the London premiere of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

The audio isn’t perfect, as I had to raise the volume a little post-production, sorry. A reminder again, that FireFox users may experience a lack of audio/video synchronisation. Try viewing it in Internet Explorer for now.

Feel free to leave a note by clicking on the comments link below…

EDIT : If you find the first link to the video doesn’t work, please try This one instead. Thanks

EDIT2 : Wow, this page (well the alternative link for the vid) has suddenly eaten nearly all of my hosting bandwidth available for the rest of the month, so for now, it is the first link only. Leave a comment if people find problems with the first link, and I’ll try uploading it to youtube or something.

EDIT3 : Many months later I remembered to upload this to YouTube, so watch it all you like…
