Anti-Bling?

Category: Kazakh Driving,KazakhstanChrisM @ 11:34 pm

OK, so this one is out of order compared to the other Lucky21842 videos I’ve been catching up on, but I wanted to embed it now in case I forgot and closed the tabs down in Firefox on Monday when we return home. So, if you haven’t already seen them, there are a lot of YouTube videos that feature elite vehicles and excessive car accessories, parading up and down (and occasionally crashing) Almaty (& a couple of Astana) streets. The video below is a sort of antidote to such clips.

If you click the video, you’ll be taken to the proper page for it, where you can check out his other videos and see the comments left by other YouTube videos. I can understand where 777kuku777 (and indeed Jason/Lucky himself) is coming from when 777kuku777 says

Wahaha, you are so right about the Almaty cars, personally I don’t see the point of those videos. If it’s your car, then do whatever you want with it, make a video for you tube and what-not, otherwise, waste of time. P.S. Dude you being a gangsta is priceless though! Oh and next time for your version of almaty cars use some local songs would be even? funnier:)

However, if I was aware of the sort of media attention that Kazakhstan attracted in some of the tabloids abroad, and I felt proud of Almaty/Astana/Kazakhstan as well, I would want to make sure that people understood that cars were not pulled by donkeys, and that in all likelihood, there were more ΓΌber-expensive dream machines parading around Almaty (at least) than in the European/American city of your average YouTube viewer…

Yes, I could have just left this as a comment on the video, BUT… 1) I’m currently signed into GMail. Which is tied into my old banned YouTube account. I’d have had to sign out, delete all Google related cookies, sign into YouTube, leave a comment, then re-sign into Gmail (I haven’t yet set up a separate FireFox profile on Ira’s Mum’s PC). Unless you have a banned YouTube account, you have no excuse – go check all the videos out, leave comments, and if you like Lucky’s output as much as me (you there, stop sniggering at the back), consider subscribing …. oh and 2) I ramble too much. Youtube comments are restricted to around 1000/1500 characters? I normally exceed that length. It is a miracle of modern science/txt speak & deliberate lazy spelling that I ever manage to convey anything in a single tweet!

Mac Users Beware

Category: Friends,PicturesChrisM @ 3:40 pm

A few weeks ago we visited a friend’s flat for a lovely meal, and a few (?) drinks. Whilst I was hovering in the stairwell having a cigarette, I noticed that the entrance to a different collection of flats had an interesting doorbell fitted. I don’t know whether it is good enough to be published on ThereIFixedIt.com or not, but I definitely think it is worth posting here. Although the screws could have been painted over, the idea of using one of the mouse buttons as a replacement doorbell really struck me. Once more, Irina came to the rescue as after a few vodkas, I completely forgot to use the camera, however she took a few shots for me πŸ™‚

It got me thinking that if you had a mouse with extra buttons, you could probably rig up a security system that would only let you in if you pressed the right combination of buttons, and as your fingers would naturally fall on the buttons, and not much effort would be required to press them, you wouldn’t have to worry about people watching you and being able to easily discern the combination. Oh, and why Mac users beware? Because they might get confused which button to press πŸ˜‰

Cat Console Combo

Category: Dasha&Kittens,PicturesChrisM @ 3:10 pm

Thanks to Irina for spotting this photo opportunity whilst I was out of our flat. No posing was involved, and luckily Muska didn’t run away or re-position herself when Ira grabbed the camera to take the shot…

Winter Is Approaching

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 9:04 pm

At least that is the reason given given by my wife’s parents for attempting to persuade me to clear the tea time table of the potatoes and meat. Now if I was out working all day with my hands (stop guffawing those who know me), or I was perhaps all skinny and bony, I could empathise with their concern. However, apart from week time walks in the park with Anna, I don’t tend to use up a lot of energy really, so I’m sure this well intended attempt to feed me up is not πŸ™‚ The vodka however is a different story – they bought back a bottle of Absolut vodka (which costs a silly amount over here in Kazakhstan) back from their holiday in Turkey. Even better, it was the raspberry flavoured variety – only pipped at the post by the (black?)currant variety. This bottle has magically been disappearing quite quickly over the weekend. Even Irina’s Dad (normally a brandy man) has been sampling it!

There see, just add some fruit in the picture, et voilΓ , it looks so much healthier!

Sorry Aunty Sasha, Not Quite Yet

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 6:54 pm

I am going to be posting a few pictures over the next couple of days that have been sitting on my hard drive waiting to be published. Why the apology to (Ira’s) Aunty Sasha? She complained mentioned that I hadn’t posted photos of Anna for a while, and there only seemed to be pictures of kittens and minced beef on the front page πŸ™‚ I imagine the post previous to this will not excite her a great deal either. Anyway, once the miscellaneous photos are published, I’ll move onto Anna’s once more.

UPSs, Anna And Posting

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 9:56 pm

Today my UPS finally died completely. It had been on the card for a while, as the last few power cuts saw it keep the PC going for about 5 seconds before the battery died. No problem, we combined a walk with Anna to a local white goods shop, and I carried the new UPS back in a ruck sack. This UPS is the third in three years here in Kazakhstan, unfortunately this one didn’t even last a year – it was dead straight away. Grrrr. Will try and get a refund tomorrow and go to a different shop. Fingers crossed.
Earlier today we moved back to the flat, and decided that we would try getting Anna to sleep in her own room, instead of in with us. As she has spent close to a fortnight at the in-laws, we thought now would be a good time for a change, instead of her getting re-used to her old sleeping position, and then changing things around.
Anyway, I’m writing this post on Ira’s laptop, so I’ll keep it short.

Yesterday I Wasn’t Mugged

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 1:30 am

… or kidnapped, beaten or dumped in the middle of nowhere. To be honest, this did not make that particular Friday and different from most days of the week, it was just that had circumstances been a little different, I might have felt it was going that way. Let me skip back a few hours to paint the scene. I went over to our flat, from the in-laws’ place, to feed our cats and make sure everything was OK. Having caught a taxi there (there is little to no passing traffic in Chubary), I flagged someone down on Turan, just in front of our flat, to get back to Irina and Anna. I explained where I wanted to go, and the driver confirmed it wasn’t out of his way too much. All fine so far…
We turned left at one junction, drove down a little more, to the last major crossroads before the road led to Ira’s parents’ house. There was a fair amount of stationary traffic – I don’t know if they were digging the road up, there was a motorhome breakdown blocking two lanes, or perhaps a VIP was passing in one of four directions in the next twenty minutes (obviously necessitating a policeman to turn off the traffic lights and direct all vehicles by hand). Anyway, the driver (a nice old man), turned to his wife in the back and they seemed to agree that waiting in the queue would take too long. No problem, he turns off right in the filter lane and motions that he will do a U-turn and approach the same junction from a different, less congested direction. However, given the width of the road, the double unbroken white lines in the middle, and no one wanting to use the pedestrian crossing further down the road (the next less illegal area to turn), we had to drive right down the road, getting further and further away from our destination. Eventually we manage to turn around, and he soon discovers that the traffic is too much to bare in this direction as well. We turn around once more, this time using a parallel side road, and attempt to enter Chubary from the rear. (You, yes you at the back, STOP sniggering now). However, as we enter the district from a road I’ve never seen, much less travelled before, I have no idea where we are. Nor does he. Or his wife. We now end up taking a twenty minute detour that leads us virtually over to the Left Bank, and it is at this point that I’d probably have got a little nervous if the driver and passenger were two dodgy looking blokes, as we’d spent a long time driving round, and were now heading in completely the wrong direction, into an area of town that I know not very well.
Anyway, as you may have guessed by the post title, and the fact I am here writing this, I got home eventually, much to my, and the driver’s relief. Next time I’ll just ask a driver to stick in the queue, or walk the last part, if they don’t seem clued in as to local short cuts πŸ™‚

Content Is Missing?

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 2:58 am

I know, I know, a whole page of the blog with nothing but my Xbox 360 moaning it hasn’t been played in over a week (not true, it just isn’t connected to the internet here), and a few random tweets. The reason for the lack of ‘normal’ (lmao) posts? We have been house/pet sitting whilst the in-laws are on holiday in Turkey, and as the PC is in the same room as where Irina, Anna and I sleep, I haven’t wanted to wake anyone up. (Friends/long term readers will remember that most stuff gets written, if not actually published, in the small wee hours). Combine that with rebuilding a friend’s PC (they finally bought a legal copy of Russian Windows XP (a real rarity over here in Kazakhstan), during which I decided flash drives were an unsuitable method of backing up his 64Gb worth of My Documents!
So, we’re returning home to our own flat soon (unless you’re a well read burglar, in which case I’m writing this sat in our own flat, polishing the shot gun and setting the trip-wires and bear traps), and I hope I’ll be posting more regularly again soon. Apart from anything else, I have a large collection of links sat in Firefox’s tabs, an even larger one lurking in my bookmarks in Firefox, and a few Anna photos to publish as well.

Autumnal walk in Astana park with Ira and Anna.
Our friend Gulnaz is coming over for tea later.

Wow, my old phone’s camera really couldn’t handle the reflected light from Anna’s clothing. It can’t shoot good photos in low light either. Picky thing…
