Midnight Shopping And Animal Cruelty

Category: Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 2:09 am

OK, so it was not exactly midnight when we decided to finally stock up on some bare essentials, but we hoped that leaving late into the evening would mean it would take less than the two or so hours it took last time we visited this shop. After ploughing through the traffic in a taxi (better, but still pretty bad), we got to Astykjan. This is a really big supermarket, especially compared to the other shops in Astana. Whereas Gros or Ramstore may have a metre or so of shelving for popular items, Astykjan has an entire aisle full of products, normally at lower prices. This is starting to sound like a sponsored post, so I’ll move on, but suffice to say the extra travel time is worth it.

Anyway, when we arrived, we checked out the little mini-shops they had inside, and popped into the pet supply store to see if they had some items we needed for the kittens. When we walked in, the first thing that got our attention was a couple of guinea pigs§ kept in a barren cage that was too small for one animal, let alone two. One was sitting still, the other was trying to strip off some food from a stick. My eyes then glanced up, and I was even more disturbed. In an empty aquarium case, there were 14 turtles§2 in a space that could maybe have held 2 more… with no movement possible. Then to top it all of, there were 15 birds in a cage maybe big enough for one or two.

If this had been Britain, I’d have phoned the authorities then and there, and hopefully the shop would have at least been fined and banned from selling animals. As it is, I do not think anything would happen at all, beyond perhaps the animals being hidden behind a counter. The sad thing is, the shop assistant probably does not see anything wrong with the conditions the animals were being held in. I thought about doing something on the spur of the moment, and buying them all, but there is no way we could care for them all at the flat, the kittens would have thought it was just dinner time, and the shop would have just bought more stock. I could have made a scene in the shop, and felt righteous, but that would have just been some crazy foreigner attempting to impose his country’s methods on their own shops, in the eyes of the people in the shop. So what did I do in the end? Nothing, snapped some shots on my mobile, and walked out a little dazed, and feeling pretty useless.

§ hmmm, or hamsters, or some sort of cute small furry animals. I’m not too good at telling the difference.

§2 ermmm, or terrapins, or whatever animals have shells and don’t live in the water.

Karra And Muska One Year Old Today

Category: Dasha&Kittens,PersonalChrisM @ 7:12 pm

I can not believe it was really a whole twelve months ago that they were born. Until we had our own kittens, I was always cautious of cats. I liked them a lot, but if they were within my 50cm comfort region, I’d tend to feel uncomfortable. I have known a few temperamental cats in my time, who like to be stroked, seem OK, and then without warning scratch and bite hard. Part of the problem, I suppose, is that when the cats in question were not mine, I did not feel comfortable shouting at them if they behaved very badly. If our kittens start climbing the curtains, bite too hard or are trying to steal food from a kitchen surface, I feel ok to tell them off. Anyway, for whatever reason, I am now happy and totally relaxed around most cats (Siamese still require care), and will miss ours when I go to Britain in 3 weeks.

The Barrel Restaurant

Category: Eating Out,Friends,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 11:35 pm

As I mentioned in the previous post, we (Ira, Me, Balzhan, Ildar, Masha, Dr. Natalya, Sasha & Sveta) went out to celebrate Dr. Natalya & Sasha’s new car. In the same way as you ‘wet’ a baby’s head, major accomplishments are celebrated with a drink over here; if you have something to drink, you should have a meal with it. So, we went to the restaurant that uses huge barrels as outdoor dining areas. We all had pork sashliq (kebabs) a little to drink, and generally nattered a little. Before hand, we went and inspected the VW Golf, which is a definite improvement over their old soviet-style car (could have been an old-style Lada?). After that, Sasha dropped the car back at the flat and walked to the restaurant, so he could drink as well.
Anyway, enough of the text, onto the photos…

So first we have a few shots of the car

Now we have the food, starting with the lovely, straight from the oven, lepioshka bread, followed by the potato sausage thingies, some (apparently) delicious salad and the main course – the sashliq 🙂

Lastly, Balzhan’s nails, of which she was very proud. We had been waiting a while for our food by this time, so Dr. Natalya was threatening to start nibbling on Balzhan’s hands…

Sattay With Friends

Category: Eating Out,Friends,PicturesChrisM @ 1:31 am

This evening we went with Assel and Walton to the roof terrace section of the Sattay restaurant. Although you do pay a little more than some places, it wasn’t quite in the range of the German style restaurant we went to mid-week, luckily. I had some Bousaky as a starter (a roll that tastes a little like a doughnut, without the sugar added), a kebab (Sashlique) with chips, and some profiteroles for dessert. Unfortunately, they were too tasty to pause and grab a photo, sorry, but you can see the edible bowl they came in at least…
One thing that caught our eyes was the difference in prices between the English menu, and the Russian menu. Being inquisitive, we asked the waitress why foreigners were expected to pay more at this establishment. The reason given was that you received larger portions for the more expensive (English language) versions of the items. Having seen how much a Kazakh man can put away in an evening, especially if the food is required to soak up a good amount of vodka, I remain unconvinced. See the pictures below for an example of how the chips cost more on one menu than the other.
The music they played was refreshingly non-pop, and the service level was good. Once we had finished our meal, and putting the world to rights over some vodka, we headed back to Walton and Assel’s place, where we had some popcorn, sweets and a little more vodka. (See the last photo below, this vodka has garnered quite a reputation internationally, apparently.)

Amsterdam Forums

Category: Amsterdam,PersonalChrisM @ 3:23 am

Just a quick post this time, I wanted to let you know about two forums I’ve joined, that have a wealth of useful information on Amsterdam.

The first is pretty much focused on those who enjoy a smoke (only in the Netherlands of course!), and want to chat with others about their previous experiences, or help out people who want to research their trip properly. Although you will also find related information, hotels, food etc., the second forum seems to have quite a large volume of info on those topics. The forum is an off shoot of the Amsterdam Coffeeshop Directory, and can be found here. If the address should ever change in the future, you can find your way there from the main site.

The second forum is part of channels.nl, and covers a wider spectrum of subjects, so if you have a genuine interest in all things Dutch, do make sure you check it out as well. You will find a little more forum politics at this site, with the guest area (you don’t need to register to post here) seeing a lot of action Do Not Feed Trolls .

Just to let you know, this is a personal, non-sponsored post – I have saved many hours using these two forums to get as much info as possible on my trip to Amsterdam, I’ve simply provided these links in the hope that others find them useful.

Last Ali BaBa Of The Summer?

Category: Eating Out,PersonalChrisM @ 2:10 am

We went out for a nice meal this evening. We took a stroll through the park, over the river Ishim, and then through to the area near the main square. Ali BaBa is an out door restaurant, with cover from any rain or wind that is blighting the evening. Tonight’s service was pretty excellent – the waitress was really attentive, to the point of asking if we needed anything when she noticed us looking around the restaurant. Compare this to the attitude you find in some places in Astana, where a snooty waitress will make that she is doing you a favour by wasting any time at your table at all, and you can probably understand why we were impressed. Perhaps the camera caught her attention, and she wanted to leave a good impression?
Anyway, onto the photos…

Photos Of The New Kitten

Category: Dasha&Kittens,PicturesChrisM @ 2:24 am

OK, as promised, here we have the very first photos of Dasha’s kitten. She actually weighs in at 110 grams, not the 107 I quoted earlier. The video is going to have to wait for another day, as I am feeling too tired to start mucking about and would probably start getting things wrong.

So first we have Mini Dasha wondering where mum has gone. (Dasha had in fact gone to grab some food and a drink, but was only 50cm away).

Now we see the box she was born in, the very same box used each year, with the birthdays written on the side. A cardboard box with some heritage 😉
Birthing box - same box used every year

This one came out reasonably well, which was surprising – I didn’t want to disturb the kitten too much, so turned off the flash, and left her in the box. This meant using the macro mode on the camera, and not actually seeing the LCD screen when taking the picture.

Here we have Ira holding Mini Dasha, followed by me holding the kitten. He/She§ looks very cute there.

The weighing procedure. (Mr Owen, if you’re reading this, NO ONE will want me to call it massing!)

A little picture to show the scale – Dasha’s Paw vs. Kitten.

Finally, dinner time.

§ – Until we know for sure which gender the kitten is, you will probably encounter a fair amount of confusion on my part. Apologies.

Aunty Sveta, Sasha And A Golden Roundabout

Category: Kazakhstan,PicturesChrisM @ 1:06 am

Last weekend Ira’s Aunt Sveta and her grand daughter Sasha came over to celebrate Ira’s Mum’s birthday. On the Saturday morning, as we were all in the car sorting out flowers, presents and food, Ira’s Dad took us over to a monument his company built. When the sun is shining, it is truly spectacular. The whole structure is covered in gold leaf, and really does sparkle when clouds do not dominate the sky. Anyway, enough of the text, onto the photos…

Ira, Walton, Alex and I all originally saw this statue/monument object just prior to going to the horse event around Astana Day. I’m glad to say no one seems to have tried to chip off the gold since then 🙂

I meant to add this earlier, if you want to see an interesting, (in)famous roundabout, check out this Google Maps satellite photo of the Magic Roundabout in Swindon, UK. You end up going the wrong way around the central roundabout!

Japanese Food In Astana

Category: Eating Out,PersonalChrisM @ 2:19 am

Last night Ira and I went out to celebrate our six year anniversary. There is a Japanese restaurant down by where Irina works, and as Ira loves sushi, we decided to go back there again. She had lots of different rolls of raw fish (yum yum…), and I went for a spaghetti bolognese. The pasta dish was a little different to the norm however, as there was no tomato, nor any sauce. To be honest, this was fine with me as I often find that the tomato can overpower the taste of the meat. To follow, I had profiteroles, which were not available last time we went there. Very tasty, though from the state of my stomach this morning, I think 300ml was about 50-100ml too much vodka 🙂
Anyway, good company, good food, who could have asked for anything more?

Great Find In The Park

Category: Eating Out,Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 1:34 am

This evening, Ira and I went to find a new cafe to eat at, in Astana Park. Her parents had told us about a place that did good sashliq, and was not too pricey. When I discovered which one it was, I had my doubts straight away; a couple of months back we went in there, and walked out straight away, as the air was incredibly stuffy. Luckily the evening was still warm, so we plonked ourselves in their outdoor seating area.
The food was good, I had beef sashliq, which for once was cooked properly all the way through, but still retained some juiciness and flavour. Anyway, to the next person that comes out to visit us, we now have another local cafe/restaurant that we will be happy to take you to 🙂
PS Walton/Asel, if you read this, we may just have found a new Cafe Shimkent… it was a little more pricey, but the surroundings certainly make up for it, and the food was great.
PPS Walton, the vodka was cheap 🙂
