Sligo

Category: Eating Out,Friends,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 4:12 am

I have mentioned this pub a couple of times here on the blog, but have yet to post photos or pass comment on the food.
Well, lets start at the beginning. It is located near the Intercontinental Hotel here in Astana, and is most definitely branded as an Irish pub (though it is probably a lot closer to an Irish-themed pub in Britain than the real thing. Not a real issue, just letting you know). The decor is pretty good considering there probably aren’t that many Irish experts in this locality. The staff were very courteous, and I’m told there is always at least on member on duty who speaks English. The first time I went there, they didn’t have much Irish music at all, and as we were returning in the evening, I burnt some Dubliners albums (the only Irish music, other than Enya, I could find on my hard drive) for them. The food was good – I think I had some sort of steak and boiled potatoes dish, whilst the others had various Irish dishes. The stew was a lot more than passable apparently. The dessert was just the right size, and again tasty.
Onto the photos…
First we have Ira and Assel (Walton’s other 0.5)

Here we have the aforementioned Walton and me (I’m the one on the right, posing beautifully for the camera.)

Here we have Dr Ken (for any macho men out there, you’ll find beers are ALWAYS served with a straw over here – he didn’t actually specifically request one 😉 )

And here we have DaveG, loving the camera lens as much as ever 🙂

The next three are a shot of the back half of Sligo, the cheesecake I mentioned, and finally the band that were playing. Which makes me think all these photos must have been taken the last time we visited Slago. See KZBlog’s post (Live Music In Astana) for more info on the band.

Meal At Dan’s

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 4:57 am

Just realized that I didn’t grab any photos during the meal we had over at Dan’s last weekend, sorry. It was the first time we’d been to their place, and they cooked up a lovely dish of (arrrgh, forgotten the word, something Mexican where you wrap food in a tortilla?? (Enchiladas?). Anyway, if you look a couple of posts back, this Dan is the one referred to in the photo as the ‘other’ Dan. I’ll have to come up with a proper naming convention at some point – this could get complicated otherwise… So, lovely meal, great evening, great company and adorable kids running running around (just wish we’d remembered to grab some batteries for their toys 🙁 ).

No Fishing In The Toilet Bowl

Category: Eating Out,PicturesChrisM @ 2:43 pm

I’ll try and remember to write about the venue itself, and the meeting with friends, but I just wanted to drop in this picture quickly.

Toilet Sign

Toilet Sign

It was in the toilets at an Irish Pub (Sligo) we randomly discovered at the weekend. The fishing and dog impressions are a joke obviously, but the other warnings are needed over here sadly, at least sometimes. Anyway, in case I forget to post more details later, there was good food and drink (Guinness included!), friendly service (with at least one English speaking barman around) and the closest to a UK/Eire pub style atmosphere we’ve found yet.

Brazilian Birds

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 3:08 am

Sorry for any readers expecting to find pictures of unusual hair styles on stunning woman, but this post is about lost (or at least unusually located) penguins being given a helping hand by the Brazilian Air Force. See the BBC article for full details, but it boils down to the birds travelling way off course, probably in an attempt to find new sources of food. Hats off to the BAF (OK, I admit, I have no clue what the correct acronym for Brazil’s air force is) for helping the birds, especially as they probably didn’t find relocation of aquatic wildlife in their job descriptions when they signed up for service.

Brazilian Penguin Relocation

Well I’m off to check if the BAF exists, and whether my memories of reading about penguins in South Africa is way off-course or not.

The Good, The Bad And The Last Minute Recovery

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 4:06 am

Before I forget the details, I wanted to let anyone who was planning on visiting a local restaurant called Patio about our experience there. We had gone with Natalya to have a nice meal (they were going for the Sushi, I was hoping to find some nice pasta). Upon arriving, we were told that ordering food was possible, but would involve a one hour wait, as they were very busy. We decided to stay and have a few drinks whilst we waited. We eventually managed to order the drinks, after being ignored by several waiters and waitresses. The drinks arrived within twenty minutes or so, and we had decided which delicacies we hoped to be delighted by, and so made our order. Over the next 45 minutes or so, various items were found to have disappeared from the menu, as the kitchen had run out of ingredients. This information came in dribs and drabs, but eventually we found a combination that did not seem to cause any problems. The girls’ starters and main course arrived, as did my garlic bread. After another hour or so, we asked the waiter where my lasagne was, as the kitchen was about to close… oh, no, that has run out, and the kitchen is already closed! We weren’t best pleased, and so asked to speak to the manager. Eventually a shift supervisor turned up, listened to our grievances and basically said nothing could be done… tough luck! We asked her to again speak to the manager, and she replied that the boss was very busy. No problem, we’ll wait, but please get her ASAP. Another twenty minutes had passed, so we phoned the telephone number listed on the back of the bill we had received. The boss herself answered, and was surprised to hear that customers were waiting to talk to her! It turns out the staff were probably worried about revealing unhappy customers were in her restaurant, and had hoped we would just pay the bill and leave. At this point the manager offered to re-open the kitchen and get some sort of food sorted, but we had had enough waiting around, and declined the offer. We inferred that the bill was perhaps an item we could come to an amicable agreement over (I may have mentioned I reviewed the local restaurants at this point, and Natalya may have accidentally inferred that my opinions held a little more clout that they do 😉 ). Without more than a couple of seconds passing, the manager offered to wipe the cost of all the food from our bill, just leaving us to pay for the drinks. In this city, I have never encountered such an offer where problems have occurred, so I was very glad to see that the principle of customer service appears to be slowly seeping into the right minds. Compare this to the fiasco of our last meal in one of the local Samovars, for example, and I can see why friends had recommended the Patio to us in the first place 🙂
Would we go back there again? Probably, though if there was any hint of another waiter who had only just started working there, or a kitchen running out of food, we may just stay for drinks instead…

A Wee Wait To Get Into Wimbledon

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 5:00 am

Some twelve or thirteen years ago, a friend and I had decided to go down to London to watch some Wimbledon matches; now obviously we were just going to be queueing up for normal admittance. As we were still in school, we didn’t have the funds available for proper Wimbledon debenture tickets, but we were still happy to be there, and just to sample some of the atmosphere, even if we couldn’t necessarily get to see any of the big stars.

Anyway, we left Cheltenham at about half five/six in the morning, hoping we’d at least get in a good afternoon’s viewing. How wrong we were! When we arrived, a massive queue had already formed, with little movement discernible. We’d thought to bring along some food and drink, and got chatting to a couple of Australian students who were next to us in the line. At some point, someone passed a long a fat, loosely-rolled cigarette (what else would students produce ?), which helped matters go with a swing. Anyway, there were two toilet stations within the long queued-up roads, but past these, you were herded into barriers that stopped people from easily moving in and out of the queues. Seriously overestimating just how much capacity my bladder had, I ended up almost doubled up in pain, unable to risk leaving the queue after so many hours, but seriously wondering if it was possible to ‘tie a knot in it’. When I had finally turned a strange colour, my friend told me that despite only being some twenty metres from the gates (but no movement for a while), I should just… well, water the plants. This led to the odd scene of my friend and one of the Aussie girls standing with their backs to me, to provide some decent cover from others in the queue, but directly in front of me was Wimbledon itself, with all the people who’d already got in, milling about. Anyway, several minutes later, with all matters resolved, we moved on, and eventually got into the grounds. It was now 4.45pm, and so we had spent most of the day queueing up. We managed to walk around and see a few matches, but the alcohol had effected us enough that we didn’t really remember who was playing who. The moral of the story? Book your tickets in advance, and don’t drink too much if you do need to queue to get into Wimbledon 😉

Think You’re A Conscientious Shopper?

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 5:49 am

If so, you may find cracked’s article on ‘The Awful Truth Behind 5 Items Probably On Your Grocery List‘ informative.
Some of the products are reasonably well know for their potential human rights issues, such as Coca Cola as well as Chiquita and Dole bananas, but I’d not heard about the issues Iams pet foods were actively involved in, nor about Nestle Nesquik (though obviously Nestle’s record in Africa with baby milk already has them high on many people’s boycott list).
Anyway, have a read through, and see what our wonderful multi-national conglomerates have been up to this last past 1/2 century 🙁

Inferior vs. Lucky Underwear!

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 11:12 pm

Inferior Boxer Shorts vs. Lucky Knickers

Firstly, we have respected Newsnight presenter, Jeremy Paxman, complaining that Marks & Spencer’s normally reliable lines of underwear has seen a marked decline in quality recently. Apparently, ‘Their pants no longer provide adequate support’! He also complained that M&S’ socks were getting holey far too quickly. Now the question is, are Jeremy’s toes getting too old and gnarly, or should people start shopping around for better brands?

Secondly, we have Mrs Marsey’s potentially life saving knickers. Some younger members of her family were attempting to fry some food, and didn’t initially notice when the fire started. Thinking on their feet, her nephew and son grabbed some of her underwear, and proceeded to suffocate the flames in time. Check here for more information.

US Starbucks Employees Slightly Less Screwed Over

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 11:01 am

Over in America, the tipping system is a little different to Europe. In most Euro establishments, staff are paid enough (not necessarily a lot by any means, but…), however in America, most waiting staff have to rely on customers’ tips to bring home a decent enough amount of money to live on. This confuses some American tourists, who are surprised that tipping is not mandatory, only considered appropriate if the staff & establishment itself actually deserve it. Whether through attentive service, delicious food, or a good atmosphere, if you enjoy your time, you tip. If the food was mediocre at best, the staff seemed very dis-interested, or you were kept waiting an un-necessary amount of time, you don’t tip.
Starbucks previously used to pool all the waiters’ & waitress’ tips (not uncommon), but then split the pot between all staff, including the management level workers, who didn’t actually wait the tables. A judge in San Diego has ruled this practice wrong, and has told Starbucks to pay back to the workers the amount they were short changed, check out this article for more details…

Holes But No Bungs Required

Category: PicturesChrisM @ 11:16 pm

Aquarium Feeding

So what is that picture all about? Basically, it is an aquarium where you can feed the fish. Nothing too unusual?
Rather than feeding from above, this fish tank has holes in its sides where you can drop the food in, and wait for the fish to poke their heads out and eat!

Feeding Fish Fish Poking Its Head Out

As far as I can tell from the explanations, the effect is achieved because the tank itself is normally otherwise sealed, so the pressures involved keep the water from emptying out onto the floor. I do wonder if they have to monitor the place during the night, in case fish end up leaping out onto the pavement.

Check over here for the original source of these pictures.
