Facebook

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 4:21 am

Irina’s work have blocked their employees from accessing Facebook, so if any friends of ours feel they are being ignored by her, please don’t be offended; by the time she has finished work and got home, there is not always a lot of enthusiasm for anything that requires human<>keyboard interaction.
I, on the other hand, have a very understanding boss, who can see the need for occasional non-profit based activities to balance out my day ๐Ÿ˜‰ (For new readers, I should probably point out that I am my boss, and as such tend not to discipline my self a great deal…)
Anyway, here is a little Facebook badge I have created, not much going on with it right now, but a nice little summary, and you can flip through some of the photos I’ve uploaded to my profile, or just click straight through to the profile itself, should you prefer.

Thinking about it, my profile’s security settings may allow you to only see a limited version, so if you want to see it all, send me a Facebook poke, with a note explaining you found me via my blog, and I’ll gladly oblige.

Facebook Capitulates To Public Pressure

Category: Aware Or Conspiracy Nut...,In The MediaChrisM @ 2:10 am

I have recently being using Facebook more than in the past, and noticed a few new groups that were formed to try and influence Facebook’s policies on a few matters – members’ browsing & purchasing habits being sold on to 3rd parties, and all rightsยง being signed over when photos are uploaded. In the first case, there appears to have been a change of heart, at least according to the BBC article over here. I really should go through my profile sometime, to check if there is anything in there I would prefer not to be publicly viewable, or potentially sold on to marketeers, but for now, I’ll try and see if any of my ongoing scrabulous games have progressed ๐Ÿ™‚ .

ยง OK, so that is an exaggeration, but basically, photos uploaded could be used for promotional purposes without the express consent of the member. Others have already pointed out that many photos would simply not be of high enough resolution and too compressed to be of use commercially, but I can forsee a situation where a montage of members’ photos are used, without any problem quality wise.

Alex Confirmed As Safe & Sound In Oz :)

Category: Friends,WordPressChrisM @ 9:33 am

The title pretty much says it all. Although I had seen her on Facebook since her plane had landed, I managed to catch her on Messenger earlier this morning. All appears to be going well, and she intends to add a post to her Dryad Musings blog soon. There was one in the middle of composition, but her net connection died, and I didn’t manage to give her the following piece of advice before it occurred…

For anyone who finds that there internet connections dies after hitting save or publish on their blog, and so they think they have lost the post…
1) Wait until you have got a successful connection to the internet again – DON’T do ANYTHING in the browser window/tab that was being used for your post composition
2) Hit the back button in your browser
3) Hit the forward button in your browser, and when you get a warning re. POST data, click OK
4) Ta Da, data should be magically saved.

Of course you could just regularly save drafts as you write the message ๐Ÿ™‚

Up Late

Category: Dasha&Kittens,Kazakh Driving,Personal,Videos,WordPressChrisM @ 5:32 am

My lessons for the rest of this week were cancelled on Wednesday, as the student is busy organizing his relocation to Moscow. This means less money coming in, so I have tried to catch up with a few more sponsored posts. Karra and Muska are a little confused, as since I started giving conversational English classes, my bed times had been closer to midnight than 6am. They have wandered in and out of the living room a few times, demanding strokes, and eventually giving up, to return to the bedroom. Hopefully they’ve not woken Irina up.
Anyway, the following animation was posted to my Facebook funwall, it portrays one cat’s not so subtle attempts to wake its owner.

I think I will check for any blunt objects near the bed before sleeping tonight ๐Ÿ˜‰

First Proper Snow Of The Winter…

Category: Friends,Kazakhstan,WeatherChrisM @ 10:04 am

Just woke up to see the world blanketed in snow. Although there have been a few attempts already, this is the first time it has properly settled. Although it looks nicer, this now means getting properly dressed before leaving the house (even I admit a shirt and light jacket aren’t best for walking in now ๐Ÿ™‚ ), and pretty soon trying not to fall over on the ice, especially when crossing the road. Also spoke to Seb for the first time in a long while this morning, and discovered he too has relented to the inevitable and signed up over at Facebook.
Anyway, I will try and grab some photos later on, but I must go for now, as I need to get ready for today’s English lesson. If Mrs Dowling could see me now, I think she would probably die out of fear for the language’s ability to survive my slaughtering of it, but there you go.
Hope all who read this do so in good health, and apologies for the long delays in between posts, I’m finding it difficult to get used to this getting up early to go to work malarkey again. I will hopefully get back into the swing of it soon.

PS Good luck to Con for this Saturday, and also to Alex. One for the tunes, one for the intercontinental moving ๐Ÿ™‚

Some YouTube Vids

Category: VideosChrisM @ 2:50 pm

I realised it had been a while since I posted any videos, so here are a few to keep you amused (hopefully)…

This video explains the perils of ‘man flu’ to any doubting women out there…

Here we have a UK beatbox artist on the Jools Holland ‘Later…’ show

Following on from Shlomo, we have another beatbox vid, this time with a Delia Smith flavour added ๐Ÿ˜‰

Unless you live in the UK, and watch East Enders, this will have little relevancy, but anyway it is based around the disco hit ‘Kung Fu Fighting’…

Here we have a stereotypical Michael Jackson impersonator, with an unusual dance partner…

This one is a collection of painful accidents, though the first clip is just a baby who appears confused…

The evolution of dance through recent decades…

Some were taken from Ali Khan’s Funwall from within Facebook, though Bournemouth Tali posted a couple to mine.

A Prime Example Of My Stubbornness…

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 2:43 am

The previous post took around 30 minutes to write, mainly because I was also doing a few other things at the same time. Having written the post, I hit the Publish button, and moved onto to clear down the work required on a few dozen other FireFox tabs, intending to return to the WordPress tab a little later.
For some reason I checked back on it before that. Lucky really – the post was lost, with a 406 error, I believe. Some issue with a suitable request not being issued or found… Anyway, simply returning back to the previous page just presented me with an EMPTY post page, with all my work missing. OK, so I’ve had similar problems before, clicked forward, and then F5ed, and the data has been re-posted correctly. So I tried this approach, unfortunately the same error returned. Before looking into this much further, I opened up Internet Explorer, and checked I could publish a test post there. (Didn’t want to do this within FireFox in case I cleared some sort of internal cache, and therefore lose all hope of recovering the work.) This new test post appeared fine.
I now had a choice, spend perhaps 10 minutes re-writing a post, as I still had the basic outline in my head, or… decide the PC was trying to annoy me on purpose, and rise to the challenge & beat the issue into submission.
Friends will not be greatly surprised to hear that I took the second route – and some twenty minutes later, recovered a version of the text, by sniffing the outgoing packets that were sent whenever I hit F5. Unfortunately the software I had installed to do this was rather rudimentary, with no filtering options, and as I had a lot of other pages loading and data being sent, it took a while to track down the right packets to analyse. Once I had searched for, and replaced, the silly codes (ASCII escape codes??), I had the post back again. OK, so it would have been simpler to just retype the thing, rather than start sniffing network packets, but it had been a while, and you can never tell when it might be useful ๐Ÿ™‚

Then before this post was finished, we had a power cut. Luckily we have already replaced the last UPS we had, so I had enough time to hibernate the PC. The power came back 5 minutes later, the PC booted up, then decided it wanted to hibernate before it had finished booting. It hung for 5 minutes, before I hit restart. T.F. for FireFox’s ability to restore sessions when it senses your PC has become fubarred ๐Ÿ™‚ Even our washing machine didn’t lose its programming, which was lucky, as I am doing some last minute washing, drying and ironing to get ready for Amsterdam and Britain. I’d already been delayed on that front by a few hours when our hot water went all orange again! Then Kara decided it was time to rid the shirt I am wearing of those evil adornments – buttons.

However, none of the above is going to bug me, I’m on my way to get severely relaxed, meet friends and family after a break of some 9 months, so I shall take it all in without getting too stressed. Oh, and Steve, a good friend from my Uni days back at Bournemouth has just got in contact through Facebook, my beautiful wife has just kissed me before going to bed, and I may even be in bed myself before dawns breaks, so the world could be in such a worse state for me right now ๐Ÿ™‚

Pates Reunion Apparently Went Well

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 5:31 am

I have checked over some of the photos and discussions being hosted over at the Pates Reunion Facebook Group, and it looks like the event went as planned – people met old friends, listened to our old head teacher, and got incredibly drunk. Sounds like nothing really changed that much in a decade or so really!
Alex and I obviously could not make it to the reunion, obviously, as we were in Kazakhstan at the time, but as we are both on Facebook, we have been able to make contact with a few people there, some of whom I have not heard from in years. I was really happy when Zanya popped up, and hope her life is going well over there. If she ever happens to read this, your god son looks adorable ๐Ÿ™‚

Pates Reunion Photo Submission Now Working

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 2:47 am

If anyone from my year at Pates Grammar School, Cheltenham is reading this, headover to FaceBook.com and upload some photos to the Pates Reunion Group (www.pates.tk). Jarv has just enabled the feature, and is asking for photos from the time we were there, from now, and also the years in between.
Anything interesting may be projected on the day, so make sure they are suitable and not too embarassing for you. Unless public humiliation is your thing ;=>
