Amsterdam – 7th January

Category: Amsterdam,Friends,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 4:57 am

Saturday was the second meeting I had planned, except this time I was in the right country! ChrisB had had a pretty nasty car accident the week before in India, so decided a day in bed was a better idea for his back than traipsing round Haarlem. ChrisD was in default mode, reverting to beer and rugby, so that left Gapie (a local ACD member) and Cisco (a man as enthusiastic as I was to get to Haarlem), along with any of the other ACD members in town.
Eventually, and to no great surprise, it was decided that the trip would be delayed at least. No one had much energy, and to be frank just sitting down and chilling out in Voyagers seemed like a much better idea.

Amsterdam – 6th January

Category: Amsterdam,Friends,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 5:22 pm

After the false starts of the day before, I was eager to get a few things done on Friday. I arranged to meet up with Gapie from the forum, and after ChrisB and I had visited a couple of coffeeshops for supplies, we settled into a chilled out routine.
I’ve occasionally blurred faces out in the pictures below – some people don’t want their photos online.
Once we met Gapie in Nes (and DC as well, who’d not been working the night before), ChrisD phoned me, with the good news that he was in Amsterdam and not too far from us!
After a good few drinks and smokes, we decided to try out one of the burger restaurants that had good reviews online – so Burger Bar was selected. I snapped a few pics, but wasn’t actually very hungry, so just had chips and tomato soup.
ChrisB had heard about some sort of freeparty at a squat on Friday night, so after a LONG walk we eventually found the place. I had been expecting dance music, UV lights and loved up people, whereas the event was actually an open-mic night organized by the group that had reclaimed the derelict building. They also had a small art show. Actually not too bad considering what I’d been expecting.

Flights And Visas

Category: Friends,KazakhstanChrisM @ 2:11 pm

ChrisD managed to get a corking deal by visiting MajorTravel.co.uk

You’ll probably want to search for London Airports to TSE (Tsleningrad, old name of Akmola, which is the old name of Astana)

Their phone number is 020 7393 1070

You may well find better deals than through this company, but ChrisD’s total fare was below 300 pounds, which we’ve never managed to get before. (He is flying at a less popular time of the year though, don’t be surprised if your fare is 33% to 100% more, depending on how flexible you are about the month you go.)
The embassy don’t mention how long it will take to process a request for a visa, last time I did it, it took them two weeks. Might be best calling them to confirm the current estimated time frame.
Anyway, try to leave AT LEAST 2 or 3 weeks spare between expected visa in your hands and flying – if they need clarification, it might require resubmitting a new form, or even popping to the Embassy in London. (Had to do that before, not difficult to find it and they spoke English). Shouldn’t need to go there, but just in case, thought it was worth mentioning. There is a tube station with 5/10 mins walk of the office.
Don’t forget you’ll need your passport in your hands before you can send off form with it!

Documents required for Visa:

Letter of introduction explaining the purpose of the visit. See below for a rough draft. The missing info is indicated in red. Feel free to re-phrase it, if you wish.
Application forms, fully completed and signed by the applicant. The form (as of 19/07/2006) is attached. See some of the answers for the form are below
Valid passport with one full blank page to affix the visa (please note that the passport must be valid for at least six months after visa’s expiration date)
One passport sized photograph (We normally wrote the name on the back and stapled it to the form)
Self addressed and prepaid envelope, special delivery or registered post only.
VISA FEES (to be paid by cheques or postal orders made out to “Kazakhstan Embassy”, maybe put your passport number on the back of the cheque) – PRIVATE VISA SINGLE ENTRY up to three months visa – 33GBP

Send the above documents to:
CONSULAR SECTION OF KAZAKHSTAN EMBASSY
33 THURLOE SQUARE
LONDON, SW7 2SD

If you need to contact Embassy:
TEL: 020-7581-4646
OPENING HOURS: 9:00 – 12:00
(MONDAY TO FRIDAY, EXCEPT WEDNESDAYS, WEEKENDS AND PUBLIC HOLIDAYS)

Their web site address (well the section you need) is www.kazakhstanembassy.org.uk/cgi-bin/index/92

Answers to some of the questions in the application form (download from the link above):
It would be simple to print out the form and fill it in by hand, as to do it on a computer is a pain; it’s definitely not been designed for filling in electronically.

In case form isn’t too clear, the info you need to put in that you don’t already know is:

17. Purpose of travel: Private
18. Inviting organization (address, tel.): N/A
or person, arranging your visit to Kazakhstan (full name, address, tel.): e-mail us for this info – not going to publish on web :>
19. Places of destination in the Republic of Kazakhstan: Astana
20. The first place of entry into the Republic of Kazakhstan: Astana
21. Temporary address in Kazakhstan: See #18
22. Who is paying for your cost of travelling and for your costs of living during your stay in Kazakhstan?: myself

Re. Expiry date on visa – put a longer date in for the end of the visa, just in case any emergencies arise, its best to have a few days comfort-zone left after you should have officially left the country.
(MAKE SURE THE END DATE IS STILL WITHIN ONE MONTH OF ARRIVAL, OTHERWISE YOU WILL NEED A DIFFERENT, MORE EXPENSIVE VISA)

Naughty Drivers

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 12:42 am

Big thanks to ChrisD for sending this link. It features impatient drivers who try to get past the automatic bollards you find in some towns with partially pedestrianised areas. People from Cheltenham will have seen similar accidents around Boots corner.

Another Gem – Driving in Almaty

Category: Kazakh Driving,Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 4:29 am

For those of you that have been reading this since the start, you’ll know I’ve made occasional reference to the interesting ‘system’ drivers use over here. Since then I’ve discovered someone who has put a lot more information, more concisely, than I could hope to. It is based on the drivers in Almaty, not Astana (ask ChrisD for help on that subject), but well worth a read.

Oh, and ChrisD, when you going to get round to posting on here about your trip?

Ah, just noticed I haven’t actually linked to the blog itself, apologies – you can find it here

Personal Posts Have Been Slowing Down Recently

Category: Eating Out,Friends,Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 4:01 am

Due to ChrisD coming over. A slight increase in my alcohol intake may also account for the lowering of posts per week. Chris came over for a week, and I hope we’ll both be writing more about his visit soon.

We just dropped him off at the airport, and despite the authorities restarting the scheme where you have to declare everything with you, on your exit of the country, he eventually got through all the steps required, and is, hopefully, by now on a plane to Istanbul, then on to Heathrow.

Also meant to say, we all met up with a nice man who runs the KZBlog , and his wife, over at the Chelsea ‘pub’ last Saturday. The company was good, the prices were high, but not heart stopping, and good news for John – they sell Guiness !!

Anyway, more info to come soon…

Jumping On A Bandwagon

Category: Friends,In The Media,Kazakhstan,Personal,WeatherChrisM @ 3:17 am

Found this article today on Richard Hammond and Top Gear, obviously inspired by the aformentioned’s crash. Couldn’t stand the guy’s attitude to be honest, but have a read and see what you think.

Also checked, and this site is now back down to #2 on Google, when searching for Chris Merriman. Not sure what went wrong, I’ve not lost any links to this site, I guess I’ll just have to live with the shame somehow ;>

I now have a Kazakh SIM card for my phone, msg me if you need the #. Got GPRS working for both of our phones, and can use them as bluetooth modems for the PC, which should keep me happy, and Irina happy, at least on my behalf…

Couple of days, and ChrisD will be over here; the weather has actually improved a little, but I’ve not told him yet, want to make sure he actually buys a coat (his first in over a decade!) and packs some warm clothes. I thought about not posting the weather info yet, but then remembered that he never reads this bloody thing anyway, so think we’re safe. Also Ira said the forecast is for the weather to get chilly again next week. Just hope the sunshine lasts long enough for him to experience it.

Less Than 7 Days

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 4:31 pm

Chris Denman will be over here in just under a week. The weather has improved slightly, though not a great deal. (Don’t forget to check the weather forecasts to the right).

Just ordered a 320 Gig Seagate drive for Chris to take over for me – he has very kindly been downloading stuff for me, and I need somewhere to store it…
