Happy Birthday Dad & Babushka…

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 3:24 am

Happy Birthday

Today is the birthday of my Dad, Babushka (Ira’s Dad’s Mum) and also Stargazer (if you don’t recognise the name, I’ll assume you have not been reading this blog for a long time, he is the Austrian author of my favourite plug in, and the man who toured Austria on a moped!).
Anyway, assuming the present and card arrive in time, I’m hoping Dad will enjoy them, though I won’t post what it was until I know for sure he has it, I don’t want to go spoiling the surprise 🙂
Once Irina has finished at work, we should be heading to the in-laws for a meal to celebrate Babushka’s birthday.

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday

Anyway, congratulations to all three people, and I hope your day goes well, with family and friends around you to help share in the joy.

Road Rage Strikes

Category: Kazakh Driving,PersonalChrisM @ 12:02 am

As we were getting ready this morning to go to the in-laws (continuation of Babushka’s birthday & arrival of Aunt, nieces etc.), I heard a loud sound outside. Still don’t know exactly what it was, but I saw an expensive looking car parked diagonally in the slow lane, blocking a Kamaz (big truck, tipper truck in this case). The car driver got out, shouted at the lorry driver, opened his door, and started hitting the lorry driver. Hard. A lot. After 30 seconds of venting his anger at the bloke, he hopped out of the lorry’s cab, got in his own car and drove off.
OK, so what, you may ask…
1) Lorry drivers aren’t normally known for being 7 stone weaklings, and so don’t usually attract a lot of physical confrontation from ‘mere’ car drivers
2) If you had a nice car, would you really risk a lorry driver ramming your pride and joy by beating him up?

Anyway, rest of the day went well, and our relatives are coming over to the flat tomorrow.

Oh, and I also wasted a fair amount of time last night, posting links to my Bikini & Bikini Waxing article site, on various blogs and forums, by mis-typing the url – www.www.bikinitips.com doesn’t lead anywhere, obviously, whereas www.bikinitips.com does.
Serves me right for posting whilst overly tired.
Speaking of which, good night…

Today (17th November) is my Dad’s birthday.

It also happens to be Ira’s Gandma’s (or Babushka) birthday.

A Little Later Than Intended

Category: Kazakh Driving,Kazakhstan,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 3:12 am

OK, as promised, here is some more info, from Mum & John’s perspective.

This is basically a cut’n’paste job from an e-mail they sent to family and friends (with permission I hasten to add ;>)

“”For those of you ancient enough to Radio 4 be familiar with Alistair Cooke’s “Letter from America” this is likely to seem a pale comparison. Certainly less erudite and not as well crafted – but hopefully it will inform and maybe even amuse, though the political comment will be markedly absent!

This is Carol’s second visit to this amazing country and my first. As we flew in at night the lack of any settlements for hundreds of miles prior to landing in Astana was perplexing. It was hard to comprehend such vast tracts of land without population. Then Astana appears on the Kazakh Steppes resembling a modern Emirate city. Disney could not have bettered it! When Carol was here last she arrived through the back door, via the old capital of Almaty, then a twenty three hour train journey across a hot and dusty terrain. She made the trip for her son (Chris) & daughter in law’s (Irina) marriage. Jokingly she had said as she left to Irina’s father that he was to have a new airport built on her return. He did – and a pretty impressive airport to boot! It is so refreshing to see architecture which is not afraid to be adventurous, particularly in the teeth of such extreme weather conditions. Thankfully on this trip it has been kind to Carol & me, between 21°C & 30°C. The temperature can famously vary between -30°C in the winter to +40°C during the short summer months.
