Alex Has A New Hole!

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 12:05 pm

(Photo credit details updated – see my last comment from the 14th October. Thank you Rivjejn basically)

I just spoke with Alex online, and she informed she has a new piercing 🙂
No pictures just yet, but is apparently a lip ring, not one of those chavvy (Marilyn) Monroe studs, thankfully. Her multiple ear rings were part of the inspiration for my own, back when I was at school. Anyway, hopefully the piercer used disposable gloves, and the wound will heal well and quickly.

Lip Piercing – not Alex, just the first semi-decent image I could find online… Anyway, due to the time difference in Australia, Alex is now heading out from work to the traditional Friday BBQ – I hope she enjoys her snags!

Alex Has A New Place…

Category: FriendsChrisM @ 6:21 pm

Although it does not yet have a land line, and therefore no internet yet, her and Mat seem very happy in their new place. Head on over to her blog (www.DryadMusings.com) to see how things are going on, where you can also catch up with her reports on starting work. If anyone happens to work for Orange’s customer (dis)service department in Britain, do you think you could stick to your promises, and sort out your backlog of requests for SIM unlocking codes…
On a different note, I’ll need to wait until I have seen the results, but I should be able to post details on a few schemes to generate a little extra income soon, if you own a blog or other type of site. They won’t pay for a month or so, but if they come through, I’ll be posting links.

Alex Remembers Her Blog :)

Category: FriendsChrisM @ 4:38 am

Our friend Alex (see the many posts here and her actual blog) has finally got around to writing a few posts on her new exciting life in Australia. She has moved over there to be with Mat, and it looks as though they will now not be sharing a flat with two other blokes, as the couple’s employers have rented them a vehicle, so they can commute instead of moving. Given the amount of time the two spent apart prior to their joyful reunion, this is probably for the best 😉
Anyway, if you have not done so yet, visit her blog, consider subscribing to her RSS feed, or at least give the site a quick Ctrl+D 🙂
Oh, and I can’t remember if I mentioned it already, but congrats to Alex on achieving a Google Page Rank of 2!

Alex Confirmed As Safe & Sound In Oz :)

Category: Friends,WordPressChrisM @ 9:33 am

The title pretty much says it all. Although I had seen her on Facebook since her plane had landed, I managed to catch her on Messenger earlier this morning. All appears to be going well, and she intends to add a post to her Dryad Musings blog soon. There was one in the middle of composition, but her net connection died, and I didn’t manage to give her the following piece of advice before it occurred…

For anyone who finds that there internet connections dies after hitting save or publish on their blog, and so they think they have lost the post…
1) Wait until you have got a successful connection to the internet again – DON’T do ANYTHING in the browser window/tab that was being used for your post composition
2) Hit the back button in your browser
3) Hit the forward button in your browser, and when you get a warning re. POST data, click OK
4) Ta Da, data should be magically saved.

Of course you could just regularly save drafts as you write the message 🙂

Alex’s Blog

Category: FriendsChrisM @ 1:06 pm

As regular readers will know Alex setup her blog (Dryad Musings, see the previous post for a link to it) when she visited us over here in Kazakhstan. Originally it was to be a place for her to write about her thoughts, and express her opinions on a range of matters. Now she will be in Australia, it can also serve as a method of staying in contact with her family and friends back in the UK.

First 07 Kitten Video, Alex And A Garden

Category: Dasha&Kittens,Friends,Kazakhstan,Personal,VideosChrisM @ 1:52 am

Other than Ildar’s first day at school, this blog is now up to date with the videos I have shot over the last few months, at least after this post. I’m saving Ildar’s collection until I know whether or not we are meeting him again tomorrow.
Anyway, first we have Tima, the single kitten that Dasha had this year, (the brother of Karra and Muska), shot last week. As he does not live with us, I doubt he will have as many photos and videos of him on this blog, but as a few people asked what he looked like, here you go…

This is the last Alex video, taken when she visited us here in Kazakhstan. Not sure what to title this, other than possibly “Alex No YouTube”? Any other (polite suggestions)? For any fans of hers, we will hopefully have some more during our Amsterdam trip, which should also include ChrisD as well.

And the last two videos in this post are from the same day Alex visited my in-laws, here we have Irina taking viewers on a trip round the garden. Over here, especially in Kazakh (as opposed to Russian) families, gardens (if present) tend to be primarily for growing produce, rather than the British standard of lots of grass and some flowers. Anyway, take a peek, and let me know if you have any questions about the plants you see… I know nothing, but will gladly pass your requests on to Ira or her Mum, who can both tell the difference between weeds and flowers, and thereby best me with their expertise by a long way 🙂

One For Alex

Category: Friends,In The Media,PersonalChrisM @ 2:27 am

Alex has been a little in the real world recently, so her blog (Dryad Musings) is a little lacking in recent posts, but perhaps this will spur her on? Anyway, next year, her and her brother are hoping to go on a survival experience, and so when I read about an American survival TV show hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons, I thought of Alex.
It turns out Bear Grylls had not in fact been roughing it every night for his ‘Man vs. Wild’ (‘Born Survivor: Bear Grylls’ in the UK) program, which many people had assumed after watching the show. He had in fact done his bits on camera, then some nights slept the night in a motel or hotel over night. I just hope they never do that sort of thing on Ray Mears’ Bushcraft shows – we catch them on BBC prime over here, quite a good show.

For Alex’s Bro – DV Video Transfer And YouTube

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 2:57 am

Re. your camcorder and achieving the best results on YouTube.
I have made this post in case I ever need to pass on these instructions to someone else – rather than trying to remember it all and re-type it, I can just pass them the url to this post…

Anyway, you mentioned you use Nero 7, my example involves Nero Vision Express from Nero 6. If you can not find the equivalent functions or options in your version, drop me a line and I will try and sort it

Onto the steps

Continue to use whichever program you are most comfortable with to transfer the the video from your camcorder to your computer’s hard drive, via the FireWire cable.

However, when selecting the file format and other related options, you want the resolution to be the same as the original (probably in the region of 720 x 576)
You also do NOT want ANY compression to be used at this point – this should be the last step in the process. Why? Because each time you use a codec to encode video data into a smaller file size, you will obviously be losing some quality. You want to leave this stage until the very end. If you do not see an option for DV or DV-AVI in your current program, try changing the options for the video codec used to NONE or NO COMPRESSION or FULL FRAMES

At this point, you should now have a reasonably large AVI file on your hard drive somewhere. Just double check that the resolution has not been changed at all, and that no codec was used. (GSpot is quite good for that, Alex has all the programs you need on a DVD we burned whilst she was over here.)

Now how you cut up the video is your choice. I personally like to use VirtualDub (again grab a copy of Alex’s DVD for it), as it is no frills, and has not crashed on me, unlike Nero’s programs. There are other options, such as Pinnacle’s Studio, or even, if completely desperate Windows Movie Maker 2. However you choose to cut the video so only the scenes you need remain, now is the time to choose a new resolution and which codec to use, unless you intend to insert text and/or use fades / dissolves / wipes etc. between scenes within the video. If this is the case, place those, THEN proceed to the next step.

For uploading to YouTube you want to choose the closest resolution to 320 x 240 as you can, and I personally would recommend using either the DivX or xVid codec. Both xVid and DivX have settings for bitrates (basically how much quality you desire), please see the end of this post for further detail.
When it comes to the audio side of things, if you do not require high fidelity, 96KBit/sec, mono should suffice. Anything that involves content other than spoken word may need a higher bit rate, and if the music is not just background, or the video involves movement from one side to the other, stereo may make more sense obviously.

If you want to keep an archive of the video, you can either burn the original, uncompressed AVI to a DVD, OR save a 720 x 576 DivX/xVid in the same way you did for the YouTube version. Just make sure you are working with the original at this point – if you encode the 320 x 240 video file to 720 x 576, you will not have a higher quality video, just a larger file-sized one. Always work with original data, when you can.

So why bother with all this if you are just uploading it to YouTube? Although they can convert the video for you automatically, their results will rarely match the quality you can achieve by processing these stages yourself. You may need to experiment a little to find a good balance between time & effort used and quality of results achieved, and also, as previously mentioned, between the codec bitrate settings used and the end result. As a purely arbitrary example, if selecting a quality level of 9 results in a 54 megabyte file, when no extra detail is discernible, when compared to a video produced when a quality level of 8 is used, it makes no sense to waste hard drive space, CPU time taken & bandwidth in transferring the file over the internet. Which reminds me, I think xVid has a sliding scale, the default is 4, 7 or 8 should be more than enough for YouTube, anyway it operates in the same way as specifying a bit rate would.

I hope some of this helps, let me know if I’ve missed something, or parts are not clear.

Are You Listening Alex?

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 1:02 am

Apparently there will be a new X-Files film made, with both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning to their famous roles.
Although I am pretty sure David had previously stated he would not be working in any more X-Files productions, as he did not want to be type cast. Oooops.
Fans will be happy to hear Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz are both going to be on board, so if you liked the original serieses, seriess, series’s seasons, it looks as though you have something to look forward to…

Last Of The Alex Photos

Category: Friends,Kazakhstan,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 4:59 am

OK, we have finally reached the end of the photos with this following shot…

Alex Ira Chris Just Arrived Astana Kazakhstan June 2007

I believe this was taken the day Alex arrived, after her little hiccup in Kaliningrad airport. If you want to read a little more about her trip over here, I’d recommend you go and read her blog – Dryad Musings.
We setup the the site whilst she was here, and Alex has already added a couple more posts since returning to her home. If you fancy reading posts that are a little more well written, rather than the normal stream of consciousness rubbish you normally find on my personal posts here :), then consider adding her to your bookmarks or even adding her feed to your reader.
