  • Photo Gallery: Almaty Subway

I finally found a nice photo gallery of the Almaty subway which opened the other day. I note that it looks a lot like the Moscow subway, with high ceilings and over-decorated walls. You half expect a crystal chandelier. That may be nice, but for this almost New Yorker, a subway is meant to be […]

  • Industry Analysis: Prostitution in Kazakhstan

No idea who Ilya Blogger is, but he seems to know a lot about the prostitution market in Almaty [RU]. Apparently, the early years of thee recession may have been good for prostitutes because the middle-management office and bank workers, who make up the main market for prostitutes, were working harder and just didn’t have […]

  • Asian Games Torch

    Asian Games Torch

KazInform has a little map up of when the torch will be where. It arrives in Almaty today and will be sent all around Kazakhstan before arriving in Astana on the 30th of January for the opening ceremonies. The map is in Russian, but it shows the cities of Kazakhstan and the date next to […]

  • How to Write About Kazakhstan

I am taking up a gauntlet here in response to a great post on Registan.net about How to Write About Afghanistan. First, mention Borat. If the article is about some problem or something that seems funny then refer to Kazakhstan as “Boratland”, “the home of Borat”, or “Boratistan”. Otherwise, if the article is about say […]

  • RVS is Boring

    RVS is Boring

According to Adil Nurmankov, the retro style restaurant that featured nostalgic Soviet chic, RVS, is now just a restaurant [RUS]. Once a magnet for tourists featuring Lenin’s portrait on the walls and quotes from Soviet documents, apparently now: in the halls, they have the same tables, but without the revolutionary menu. However, they do have […]

  • Male Escort Service?

Men for Cheap [RUS], an article in Vremya, claims that a male escort service will soon open in Almaty, providing women with a date for hire to go to the movies, or restaurant. The reporter claims to have tried out the service and had a pleasant time, if a stressful one due to the newness […]

  • Death of a Soldier

A tragic story I came across on the death of a soldier from Aktobe. Apparently on March 4, Sergeant Marat Serkebayev, commander of novice platoon 97617, stationed in Almaty oblast, hit Private Azamat Orazbayev, killing him on the spot from failure of the heart and lungs.

According to Megapolis (which has the most detailed account of the incident), the commanding Lieutenant assembled the battalion for the usual end of the day debriefing when he was summoned by his commanding officer.

  • Update on the Dams

Just an update on the tragedy in Almaty oblast where independent of each other, two dams burst at the end of last week. Global Voices Online cites some good Russian language blogs with details of the evacuation, including a post from Lord Fame on LJ [RUS] who knows the area and posts pictures from the […]
