Chaser Becomes The Chasee(e?)

Category: Anna's Videos,Eating Out,Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 1:59 pm

Arrrrgh. Someone remind to get back to tagging posts sometime soon. Please? Back down to about 25% of the posts with proper (checked, not just auto-generated) tags again! Anyway, the final post from the 15th of May 2010, again at Ali Ba Ba with DanC’s family and Walton. Can’t honestly remember right now if Assel managed to make it over, or if she was busy at work.
Anyway, looking back at this video now, it is really cute to see Anna tottering around, still not totally stable on her feet. At one point it looks as though Anna is attempting a game of Kiss-Chase with Aidan, which given his reputation with girls, is quite the turn around!
In case you’ve not been before, this video gives a small glimpse as to how Ali BaBa looks, though you’ll need to return to the previous post to get an idea of how the side tables look.

DVDs Are Bad. Other Digital Media Not, Apparently!

Category: Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 11:48 pm

I can’t yet publish why (need to check with him first), but thanks to a message from my brother last night, I am now fairly confident that we’ll be visiting Britain again around late August time. Given that much warning, we should be able to get everything well and truly sorted for the trip. (Before I forget, hugh congratulations are due to their little son Jack, as he has just spoken his first proper word – doggy!)
The first thing to consider is keeping the luggage weight down, and also what to try and avoid packing at all – the customs staff still seem to occasionally pick up on the fact that we might have a disc or two in our hand luggage. Officially, you are still supposed to go and get each CD or DVD checked, sealed and stamped a day or two prior to your trip. Going through customs laptops are totally ignored each time. Portable hard drives, memory cards on their own or in phones/PDAs etc are also never given a second glance. This in spite of the fact that they could easily be holding 250 times more information than a simple DVD-R. Yet another silly little quirk that will likely not be sorted any time soon. To be honest, even I can appreciate that protesters and politicians are likely to have different topics in their sights.

He Wasn’t The Thieves’ Leader Apparently!

Category: Eating OutChrisM @ 2:32 pm

OK, on to the next search term that people googled before they ended up at this blog, and a timely reminder… “Ali Baba restaurant Astana” is the term, and apparently they should be opening for business again this month. As they are an outdoors venue (albeit with a tent like covering), and combined with Kazakh’s discomfort with what a British or American visitor might consider a perfectly acceptable temperature to dine al fresco, we have to wait each year to be able to eat and drink there. It is one of my favourite places to chill out in, although you need to be careful if you decide to dine in one of the side tents, with their Kazakh style low tables and cushions on the floor to sit on – too many beers and you might just find the cushion makes an inviting pillow! This site appears to rank 5th, 6th and 7th with Google (I did sign out of Google to check the search wasn’t biased in my favour only because they knew it belonged to me – your results may vary?). If I was running a site that made income from visitors who were interested in a particular niche topic, be it Astana Restaurants or mattresses, then I could probably make some money out of these results, however I’m not aware of Ali Baba (click for their location on Google Maps) running any sort of affiliate scheme. I just hope a few visitors have read previous reviews when looking for somewhere to eat out in Astana, and decided to give them a shot!

Anna’s Playgroup

Category: Anna's Photos,Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 12:56 pm

I’ll try and find the area or street name out from Irina later on, but I just wanted to write a quick post about the playgroup/kindergarten/insert your preferred phrase here that Anna attends.
Every Tuesday and Thursday I drive Anna over to the playgroup. The journey isn’t too bad, considering we catch the tail end of rush hour, and need to travel via a few major roads. Now that Anna is happy wearing her sunglasses, I don’t get a blood curdling scream every time we’re facing the sun whilst driving, which reminds me, we need to go and find a better fitting pair this evening – I think the current glasses are designed with younger children in mind.
Anyway, we arrive and park up the car, then proceed to the entrance door (the location is basically a converted flat/apartment, so they share their main doorway with all the other people living there). Once buzzed in, Anna walks up to the second floor (she stopped trying to demand being carried up and down stairs a good few weeks back now) with me, and we get welcomed in. Although this is Kazakhstan, only the children need to remove their outdoor shoes (the room they go into has a carpet, the parents are in a reception area that has lino). We take off the multiple layers that local customs dictate must swaddle your child, even if the temperature is well above freezing and you’ve driven there(!), and then the children go into their room with the teacher. If we’ve arrived early enough, Anna can join in playing with some of the toys there, whilst we wait for everyone to arrive. Speaking of everyone, the other children tend to number between two and five others. Just about the right size, IMO.
Once the session is about to start, the door is shut (partially to ensure the kids don’t constantly run in and out to be with their mothers (I’m the only Dad in attendance), and also because as I’ve mentioned before, the mums do tend to talk quite loudly, despite being sat only a metre or two away from each other. As the glass is frosted, I can only go from the sounds I hear, but it seems as though there is a routine each time, starting off with a song that gets them all involved (singing, pointing at each other when their names are mentioned and other hand actions). The rest seems to be semi-educational, semi-fun. Each time, the children complete some sort of Arts & Crafts project, I’m amazed at how little mess Anna has on her by the end of it! Anyway, this carries on for around 40/45 minutes, they have a regular goodbye sort of song, and then the door is opened. Normally happy and bouncy, they all run out to their respective Mum or Dad, usually brandishing their artwork with pride. We reverse the previous domification (not a real word, dom is home in Russian) of clothing and footwear, and get ready to head home. Most weeks, whilst the children are playing and there are multiple simultaneous loud Russian language conversations going on, I pop outside for a cigarette and return to watch very old episode of Dr Who from the 60s on my phone. It might appear a little rude, but to be honest if I sit there doing nothing, my brain tries to listen to all the competing conversations at once, and gradually melts down as it tries to grab a few words of the vocab I know, and build up a picture of exactly what they are talking about.
Anna seems to enjoy going their each time, I can’t remember a “I don’t want to go” sort of reaction prior to leaving our flat. The price is very reasonable, to the point of wondering how they’re actually making enough profit to pay both the staff there! They recently asked everyone to sign contracts, basically setting out what we can expect from them, and what they expect from us (if you don’t turn up, please get a note from a doctor if you don’t want to be charged), but they are very reasonable, not even charging us for the time I tried to turn up, found a road blocked and didn’t manage to find a better route. All the children seem to get on very well with the teacher, and whilst the room doesn’t have all the latest academic gadgets, and isn’t really close to where we live, the fact that Anna is happy there, and happy with the nice lady who teaches (OK, need to find a better word than teacher, but you know what I mean) means we’re happy to keep taking Anna there.

This photo was taken recently – the bright sun at the window confused the not-too-great sensor in my phone’s camera, but it gives you a basic idea of the place.

Birthday Post

Category: Anna's Photos,Eating Out,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 12:07 pm

As referred to in a recent comment, I appreciate that this blog has been left a little messy since my birthday. What with lots of individual tweets, and no linked media embedded, the page looks a little bare right now.
I’m going to condense a few tweets into summary posts, then get back to posting Anna’s photo and videos.

What seems to be becoming a birthday tradition is Ira, Anna, Ira’s Mum and me all heading down to the local TGI Friday on the eve of my birthday. There is a lot of choice here in Astana for nice restaurants, however the burgers, garnishes and cocktails seem to keep me coming back for more, even if it is only an annual event.
The first thing I noticed was that the TGIF staff training (or perhaps it is just as simple as hiring different/extra staff) seems to have improved their customer service skills exponentially since last year. Without being too sycophantic or constantly hovering near our table, our waiter was eager to answer all questions, spoke some English, and even ran down the road to a local shop to grab me some cigarettes when I discovered the restaurant didn’t sell them!
I unfortunately was too distracted by the tastes to take a photo of the starters, but I managed to snap the other courses – see below. TGIF is obviously still quite pricey compared to some places, but I’d definitely classify it as a nice treat when you can afford/justify it.

Buddy Bears Brought Back!

Category: Anna's Photos,Friends,Kazakhstan,PicturesChrisM @ 8:45 am

It took a while (see here for previous mentions of them), but I can finally present a few photos taken of the Buddy Bear exhibition that was in Astana last year. DanC was back in town at the time, and so most of us managed to meet up near Baiterek and have a look around. It was a good afternoon out, though I wish Anna had already become used to her sunglasses, as she seems to hate bright sun in her eyes even more than me. This meant she probably wasn’t able to get a good look at some bears.

For more information and photos, Kazakh Nomad’s blog entries from last year are worth checking out.

Birthday Meal Contd. – Videos

Category: Friends,Kazakhstan,VideosChrisM @ 4:32 pm

As promised, I’ve got around to tracking down the videos from my YouTube account (I uploaded them all months ago, but didn’t change the title or description, meaning we had such wonderfully useful info as MOV0684.MPG present) from Korean man’s birthday party last year. The date continued to be the 6th of May 2010 🙂

Irina and Anna dancing. Followed by me being told to get back to our table and stop recording everything.

Here we have Babushka and Anna (in the garden area outside the Attila restaurant) telling Dedushka to get up as she wants to walk somewhere. Korean man also makes an appearance on the right hand side of the frame. Anna then decides that Baba should in fact carry her somewhere, but seems to get a negative response. Looking at her (Anna 🙂 ) walking in this video makes me smile, as we thought at the time she was so stable and grown up already. Compared to how she is now, it just doesn’t seem possible that the changes occurred in less than a year!

Friends of the birthday boy take to the dancefloor. I’m nowhere to be found as the BPM needs to be a tad higher (as does my BAC) before I forget that rhythm and movement aren’t friendly enough to sync up with my body…

A similar video here, but given the extra oomph one person is putting into the dancing, I’m guessing this was from a little later in the evening after a couple of toasts and shots 🙂

A saxophonist appears, and I’m guessing the first tune was a local favourite, as couples descended to the dancefloor with remarkable speed! Babushka, Dedushka and Anna all dance together.

Saxophonist continues to play (slightly hidden by a pillar) and people continue to dance… You can also see Anna’s balloon which at one point escaped to the very, very high ceiling. A kind man rescued it before Anna’s face became too disappointed 🙂

A-ha, speak of the devil, and he appears in the next video, with the saxophone still playing in the background…

A local Korean cultural centre kindly attended and performed for us, and whilst their performances may not have been as mm perfect as “professional” dancers, you could see the enjoyment they experienced from dancing in the way of the old country, and everyone seemed to enjoy watching them. Hmm, apart from one person who’ll remain nameless who doesn’t seem to be too bothered.

Finally, although it is short and the light had already gone (so the video isn’t very visual…), I’m not sure if I’ve ever managed to catch this folk(?) song being sung previously, so here we have it towards the end of the night, when people had begun to filter outside for a lovely sashliq.

Ice, Water, Mud & Pasta

Category: Eating Out,Kazakhstan,WeatherChrisM @ 11:56 pm

It seems that Britain and Kazakhstan are in sync with the weather changing (if not the actual temperatures) right now. We spoke to Dad earlier today so he could see Anna via the webcam, and discovered that the UK is also experiencing warm weather. Although Kazakhstan is not yet in t-shirt and shorts weather, nearly all ice patches have melted, and temperatures reached 17 degrees Celsius, at least in the sun. Anna did look towards the playground area hopefully at lunchtime, whilst we were walking towards the car (luckily the play equipment is all metal, I hate to think what would happen to any wooden swing sets unlucky enough to be left out in a Kazakh winter that hits minus 35C at times!), however the ground around the slides et al is still water logged – wellies and old clothes might just be OK, but we were on a mission to pick Irina up from work and enjoy a lunch eating out for once. We headed to a new Italian restaurant that I forgot to note the name of. It is in the Mega shopping centre, on the top floor. Next to the indoor man-made rock climbing area, it has replaced the fast food Big Mammas outlet. Ira’s spag bol was definitely nothing to write home about, but with few customers to speak of the service was good, and the carbonara was just right. Happy to return there (I’ll remember the name this time) and try out there pizzas next time.
