Ildar’s First Day At School

Category: Friends,Kazakhstan,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 9:57 pm

Yesterday we went to meet up with Ildar and Mum (Balzhan) to attend his first day at school. Dr Natalya and her daughter Sveta also came. Sveta is still a few years away from going to school, but it looks like she was interested in everything going on at least.
One of the things that really stood out (apart from the fact that Kazakh children appear to start school a year or two later than in Britain) is just how seriously they take the first day at school. There were boys in suits and girls in their Sunday best. (As Kazakhstan is, at least nominally, a Muslim state, perhaps that should be Friday best??). The ceremony lasted a little over an hour, with flags, music blasted out of speakers, the national anthem, lots of kids with flowers, speeches by those about to leave the same school, and plenty of proud relations milling about.
Anyway, on to the photos (I hope to finish editting the videos later and if I get time will post them on here this evening)…

First we have mother and son

This is the better quality of the two group photos…

However, I could not miss this one out, primarily because it has Ildar showing off his milk teeth missing – truly growing up now πŸ™‚

Here we have the children ready lined up to be bored to sleep by the speeches. (I was really impressed how well they all behaved – I got fidgetty enough to sneak off for a cigarette half way through.)
Smartly Dressed For School

Perhaps their good behaviour was attributable to the formidable presence of the headmistress?

The school flag was wheeled out…

Finally a quick shot of the school building itself. In times past, it would probably have at least received a quick lick of paint before a ceremony like this, but the sculptures were still pretty impressive.

Astana Day Concerts Videos #6

Category: Kazakhstan,VideosChrisM @ 5:07 pm

The 9th Act a the Astana Day Concert. Singing in Russian, as far as I can tell, the song was dedicated to the President (as it was his birthday) and to Astana itself. Pretty scenery from around Kazakhstan is projected on the screen behind the singer.

This act certainly woke the men up in the audience, as three women sang and swayed in their aqua blue dresses. At the same time, we had some aerial gymnastics from people suspended from a crane, with no safety net or harnesses! The singing was in Kazakh. Well, OK, I don’t know that for sure, but I can’t recognise a single word in the songs, so I am just presuming it wasn’t Russian. Happy to be corrected πŸ™‚
If anyone can tell me exactly what I was attempting to zoom into at around the 2:40 mark, please do let me know…

Part 1 Of The 11th Act at the Astana Day Concert. Singing in English, commentary in Russian. Another act that appeared to enliven at least 50% of the audience. The three women all wore black skirts/dresses of varying styles, the knee high stockings on the 3rd lady did not do much for me personally, but each to their own…

Almaty Academia Blog

Category: KazakhstanChrisM @ 4:34 am

It sometimes pays to visit the sites of those people who comment at the same sites as you. For example, I came across the KIMEP blog today, which details the issues currently surrounding those who attend or work at the university in Almaty. Although the posts written in Russian are well beyond my very basic comprehension skills, the English language posts certainly make for gripping reading. If you or anyone you know hopes to work there (especially foreigners) or attend courses there, it may serve you well to do a little research here, and ask questions of the Uni staff before committing to anything. This sort of site, although obviously written by one person with a pre-existing issue with the establishment, definitely embodies just why blogs are very useful to those wishing to obtain a more balanced picture than can be achieved with simply reading official literature.

Astana Day Concerts Videos #5

Category: Kazakhstan,VideosChrisM @ 2:54 am

So here we have the next batch of clips taken from the Astana Day Concert back in July.

The first was shot after the 8th act had finished. We were able to hear a procession some where outside the concert arena, but beyond that, no one really seemed sure exactly what was going on. Eventually, a live audio and video feed was displayed on various screens around the area, so people coudl at least see what was winding its way to us…

Here we have the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, and various other political figures, including some high up person from another stan in our area, all arriving to their VIP area, which was under a big open sided marquee. Towards the end of the clip, you can hear some musicians drum in the carnival procession. Quite whether the President caused the carnival to be delayed, or vice versa, I could not tell…

As it was the President’s birthday, as well as a day of celebration for the city of Astana itself, the marching bands that preceeded the carnival had yet another backdrop of the President doing his leader type jobs on a screen in the background. The drummers at the very top of the stage were certainly visually impressive, though if you check all the videos I’ve uploaded at YouTube, you may well notice their physical actions are not always synced with the drum beats played over the speakers. That isn’t a technical hitch, the same issue was apparent in real life. Still looked good though.

Anyway, thats all for now, I will try and make time later to post some more of these, if not, you may have to wait until later in the week… Try and contain your excitement now ;=P

Another Power Cut

Category: Internet Connections,Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 7:20 pm

Last night, we had another power cut in the flat around our area. Although a little frustrating, the part that really has begun to annoy is the fact that our ISP, or to be more precise, upstream of them, where Kazakh Telecom’s hardware comes into play, is unable to automatically enable internet access following suck black outs.
Normally, this would mean Irina waiting until 9am, phoning our ISP’s technical staff, and them then contacting Kazakh telecom to go and kick their server until it admits that the internet exists, and clients are wanting to connect.
However, as I previously noted on this blog, yesterday, today AND tomorrow are all public holidays. This means there are NO staff at the ISP, and no other contact methods are available. So it looks as though I will have no internet at home for a few days. I’m just hoping they and Kazakh Telecom both decide to do some work this Sunday, else it will be another day before I can get online.
In case any smart arses want to leave a comment, I am currently at the in laws, using their PC, as we came round for the day.
I really need to get on with my work over the next few days, to ensure I have some money available when I go to Britain, but it looks like I will just have to recalculate my spending money again.
It could have been worse, at least the power cut was in the middle of the night, so was not so frustrating as usual. That said my new UPS seems incapable of shutting down the PC properly, and so unless I catch it in time, the computer is just turned off; this is what caused the last hard drive to fail. I’ll hopefully trace what is causing the issue, and get it sorted soon.

Karra And Muska One Year Old Today

Category: Dasha&Kittens,PersonalChrisM @ 7:12 pm

I can not believe it was really a whole twelve months ago that they were born. Until we had our own kittens, I was always cautious of cats. I liked them a lot, but if they were within my 50cm comfort region, I’d tend to feel uncomfortable. I have known a few temperamental cats in my time, who like to be stroked, seem OK, and then without warning scratch and bite hard. Part of the problem, I suppose, is that when the cats in question were not mine, I did not feel comfortable shouting at them if they behaved very badly. If our kittens start climbing the curtains, bite too hard or are trying to steal food from a kitchen surface, I feel ok to tell them off. Anyway, for whatever reason, I am now happy and totally relaxed around most cats (Siamese still require care), and will miss ours when I go to Britain in 3 weeks.

Astana Day Concerts Videos #4

Category: Friends,Kazakhstan,VideosChrisM @ 2:33 am

OK, as you may have read from earlier posts, I have been experimenting trying to find the best way to encode videos to ensure high quality clips on YouTube. So far things have not gone well. I have ascertained that I do need de-interlace the raw DV video from my camcorder. I have tried different ways of resizing from 720×576 to 320×240, including clipping, adding letter box strips, changing the aspect ratio, all to no avail – the video quality is still far worse than previous videos I’ve uploaded. I have tried both DivX and Xvid codecs, with medium to high bit rates, but I always seem to end up with quality that would look bad coming from an old mobile phone.
For now, I shall continue posting the videos as they stand. If someone has an idea about how to achieve better results, let me know. Similarly, if someone would like to have a copy of these, let me know which interests you, and we’ll sort something out…

First we have a short clip of the lasers being tested during the 7th Act at the Astana Day concert. Why have I included it? Watch out for a video taken later in the night, that shows just how impressive the laser show was πŸ™‚ As a small techy point, although the square and X don’t appear contiguous, to the naked eye, they were solid…

Here we have The 8th act singing in Russian…

Lastly (at least for this post), we have Alex, Ira and Ira’s Mum after the 8th act…

The Barrel Restaurant

Category: Eating Out,Friends,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 11:35 pm

As I mentioned in the previous post, we (Ira, Me, Balzhan, Ildar, Masha, Dr. Natalya, Sasha & Sveta) went out to celebrate Dr. Natalya & Sasha’s new car. In the same way as you ‘wet’ a baby’s head, major accomplishments are celebrated with a drink over here; if you have something to drink, you should have a meal with it. So, we went to the restaurant that uses huge barrels as outdoor dining areas. We all had pork sashliq (kebabs) a little to drink, and generally nattered a little. Before hand, we went and inspected the VW Golf, which is a definite improvement over their old soviet-style car (could have been an old-style Lada?). After that, Sasha dropped the car back at the flat and walked to the restaurant, so he could drink as well.
Anyway, enough of the text, onto the photos…

So first we have a few shots of the car

Now we have the food, starting with the lovely, straight from the oven, lepioshka bread, followed by the potato sausage thingies, some (apparently) delicious salad and the main course – the sashliq πŸ™‚

Finally we have the attendants of the evening’s festivities…

Lastly, Balzhan’s nails, of which she was very proud. We had been waiting a while for our food by this time, so Dr. Natalya was threatening to start nibbling on Balzhan’s hands…

Weird Long Weekend – Kazakh Style

Category: Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 3:23 pm

Due to the national holiday tomorrow (30th August), companies give their workers Friday off as well. Then make then come into work on Sunday. This means they have three days off in a row, then have to work six, possibly seven if the following Saturday bosses decide there is too much work and call everyone in again…
TF I’m working from home πŸ™‚ I have a very understanding boss. If only I could give myself a pay rise or company chauffeur… At least the selection process was painless for this role πŸ˜‰
