The Internet Is Dead, Long Live The Internet…

Category: Internet Connections,Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 4:53 pm

OK, melodramatic post title, but in case it flew right over your head, I’m referring to The King Is Dead, Long Live The King! (or Le Roi est mort. Vive le Roi! (yes, I wikied before posting to make sure I had the correct words 🙂 ))

Anyway, our current internet connection is over priced, under powered, and has a relatively low data allowance per month. This is on an ‘unlimited’ connection. It is currently 256Kbps, which drops to 64Kbps after 7Gb has been downloaded. The new connection will be through Megaline, almost 80% cheaper, and have a monthly allowance of 10Gb. Unfortunately, they only offer 128Kbps on their unlimited packages, and after those 10Gb, the connection is throttled to just 32Kbps – worse than dial up! However, with the money saved, and the extra 3Gb per month, I think we made the right choice.

I’m posting this now in case there is a problem, and we do not get the new connection working once the old one has been terminated – if I don’t post for a while, you know why.

Barrels Of Fun

Category: Eating Out,PersonalChrisM @ 10:04 am

To celebrate Dr Natalya’s birthday, we went to the ‘barrel’ restaurant yesterday. I have forgotten the official name of the place, but due to the use of huge barrels outside as dining areas (at least in the summer months), that barrel place is easier to remember 🙂
As well as Dr Natalya, her husband Sasha (when in doubt, if a guy is Russian, Sasha is normally a safe bet 😉 ), their daughter Sveta and Masha, we also had Balzhan and her son Ildar. We finally had a chance to pass on a couple of little presents for the kids (some toys and a British comic each) who seemed to enjoy them. Anyway, we had some salad (OK, I admit I just munched on the bread), a few plates of pork sashliq and I ordered some chips. Topped off with some ice cream, and a good time was had by all. Sadly Balzhan and Ildar can not make it this Christmas to Mum’s wedding, so it was good to see them again before New Year, which is a much bigger holiday/celebration over here, than Xmas.

Kazakh Pensions Are A Disgrace!

Category: Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 2:33 am

I was speaking to a friend recently, and discovered one of their relatives had just reached the official pensioner age. The relative has chosen to continue working in their current job. Not that most people have a lot of choice… The MONTHLY pension here is just 11,000 tenge! That equates to around $85, or if you prefer £40, to live on. Although some essentials are cheaper in this country, a lot of prices are catching up, without a matching rise in wages or pensions. For those pensioners living solely on a their state pension, I simply can not imagine how they manage to pay the electricity and other utility bills, buy enough food to survive 4 weeks. That is completely ignoring such ‘luxuries’ as clothing or fuel for their transport, if they have any.
When it comes to most matters with this country, I stay fairly neutral – it is difficult to criticize any system without having lived through the multitude of changes etc., however this pension level just seems immoral.
Anyway, I’ll hop off my soap box for now, at least until someone gets me fired up about the equally scandalous level of pay doctors get paid here.

A Month Of Random Contacts…

Category: Friends,KazakhstanChrisM @ 12:39 am

During the last month or so, I have been contacted by a number of people, all related to Kazakhstan strangely enough. First we had someone who has built a plane and called it Berkut (which is also the name of a vodka over here), an English guy moving to Astana who wanted some more information about satellite TV and supermarkets, an Australian guy who is moving here in December, with his Russian wife, and finally an Indian (apologies if incorrect, his surname sounds Hindu to me) architect, living in New York who designed the local Cinema City complex (he wanted some photos of it, as his current ones weren’t too good).
I’m hopefully passing the vodka on to an American friend, so the plane builder can celebrate the flight with a suitably named drink, we’re looking forward to meeting some new faces here in Astana at some point, and the architect has been put in touch with Tom, who has better camera skills than me, so should have some better shots than those captured last night at Tiflis.
Anyway, they all made contact through finding this blog, so a big thanks to the search engines out there who are spidering away 🙂

This Week’s Annoyances

Category: Kazakh Driving,Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 12:59 am

1) Cars that drive round at night without any lights on. WTF? Police will stop cars for executing a U-turn when the road is safe and clear in both directions, but seem not to give a damn about a tonne or two of metal speeding along with no illumination.

2) Cars that only have one headlight or brake light working. See above re. lack of police action.

3) Pupils that are otherwise incredibly polite, but do not turn up for a lesson, meaning their teacher either wastes an hour walking to and from the office, or needlessly spends money on a taxi.

4) Pointless lists on blogs 😉

Up Late

Category: Dasha&Kittens,Kazakh Driving,Personal,Videos,WordPressChrisM @ 5:32 am

My lessons for the rest of this week were cancelled on Wednesday, as the student is busy organizing his relocation to Moscow. This means less money coming in, so I have tried to catch up with a few more sponsored posts. Karra and Muska are a little confused, as since I started giving conversational English classes, my bed times had been closer to midnight than 6am. They have wandered in and out of the living room a few times, demanding strokes, and eventually giving up, to return to the bedroom. Hopefully they’ve not woken Irina up.
Anyway, the following animation was posted to my Facebook funwall, it portrays one cat’s not so subtle attempts to wake its owner.

I think I will check for any blunt objects near the bed before sleeping tonight 😉

Cat Owners PLEASE Read…

Category: Dasha&Kittens,In The MediaChrisM @ 6:28 pm

Just read a report from the BBC that is of relevance to any cat owners, if you ever treat your cat for fleas, make absolutely sure you are buying the right treatment. Anti flea drops that are suitable for dogs can contain a chemical that is highly toxic to cats, so make sure that your cat stays healthy by only buying the appropriate medication. Of course, if you are ever in some doubt over that sort of thing, you should consult your local vet.
The brands that I could find online, that use the chemical (Permethrin) are Repel Permanone, Permethrin Tick Repellent, Adams, Bio-Spot, K9-Advantix and Cutter, though other products (used as general insecticides) also contain it. I’d hate to think of any cat owner accidentally killing their cat by trying to rid it of fleas, so if you know anyone who owns cats, please do pass this information on.

Skating On New Ice…

Category: Kazakhstan,WeatherChrisM @ 12:27 am

As I previously mentioned, today we had the first proper snowfall of this winter. It has settled on the ground, and in places already formed quite impressive drifts. I remembered to dig out my hat, gloves and winter boots, but forgot my scarf – by the time I noticed, it was already too late to return to our flat and find it, as I would have arrived at the office after my pupil’s lesson was due to start.
Anyway, I strode out into the brisk morning sun shine, and for the first few steps, the walk to work was the same as the last fortnight’s.
Then I found some ice, and almost came a cropper immediately. I instinctively bent my knees and threw my arms out for balance, looking like some deluded surfer or skateboarder, sans equipment. Despite the foolish appearance (I’m glad the entrance to our flat is hidden at the back of the building – less on lookers to look and laugh 😉 ), I managed to maintain my balance, and immediately took on the old granny shuffle that seems to prevent too much sliding and falling over. Once you hit snow again, walking can return to normal, but if you follow the path that others have already created in the snow, you soon find ice once more. This means you need to trudge through the fresher snow, which is slower to traverse, but provides better footing. The next area of interest is the pedestrian crossing. (See the many previous bitching about motorists attitudes to such zebra crossing within older posts in the Kazakh Driving category here.) In non-icy conditions, most cars do at least slow down, or change lanes to lower the probability of a little metal and bone combination occurring, however when the first snow has fallen, and motorists are still driving at summer speeds on the road, stepping out onto that crossing it once again a hair raising experience. Luckily there were no complete idiots around at the time, so I made it across. I made it to the office on time, but unfortunately my pupil was delayed by the icy conditions and resulting slow moving traffic. On the way back home, I resolved that unless I am running late, I will take a few extra minutes with my journey, and cross by the traffic lights instead, where I can at least feel more morally indignated (hmmm, I should probably start to check if words exist, now that I am supposed to be helping others learn English…) should I be run over 😉

First Proper Snow Of The Winter…

Category: Friends,Kazakhstan,WeatherChrisM @ 10:04 am

Just woke up to see the world blanketed in snow. Although there have been a few attempts already, this is the first time it has properly settled. Although it looks nicer, this now means getting properly dressed before leaving the house (even I admit a shirt and light jacket aren’t best for walking in now 🙂 ), and pretty soon trying not to fall over on the ice, especially when crossing the road. Also spoke to Seb for the first time in a long while this morning, and discovered he too has relented to the inevitable and signed up over at Facebook.
Anyway, I will try and grab some photos later on, but I must go for now, as I need to get ready for today’s English lesson. If Mrs Dowling could see me now, I think she would probably die out of fear for the language’s ability to survive my slaughtering of it, but there you go.
Hope all who read this do so in good health, and apologies for the long delays in between posts, I’m finding it difficult to get used to this getting up early to go to work malarkey again. I will hopefully get back into the swing of it soon.

PS Good luck to Con for this Saturday, and also to Alex. One for the tunes, one for the intercontinental moving 🙂

3rd Day Of Work

Category: Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 4:17 pm

As I previously mentioned, I now have a second job helping Kazakhs and Russians that want to improve their English through conversation with a bona fide UK citizen 🙂
I will try and keep the details anonymous, as I’m not sure that the people would want their names etc. publicly posted. Today was the first time I met my school girl pupil. And before anyone cracks any bad jokes, she is just 13, so nothing dodgy please… She is not as confident in speaking, and appears to have a smaller vocabulary than the other person, but she at least wants to learn. The man is a little more forthcoming when it comes to conversations, but as long as I have a structure in place for her lessons, I think it will go OK. If things progress well, I may have some more clients lined up, as their is a company close by that may want me to help their staff as well.
The time away from the flat has both its advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, getting into the fresh air, and a brisk 40 minute walk each day is bound to be good for me, but I earn less there than I could at home writing commercial posts. Also, I am not really looking forward to the steps up to the building when the ice and snow kicks in – they are already quite slippery if it has rained, so I will need to remember to keep awake. Speaking of which, Mondays, Tuesday and Thursdays I will need to be at the office by 11.15am, and Tuesdays an hour earlier, which means I have to go to bed a lot earlier. In isolation, this is obviously not a problem, but to get the best paying opportunities for this blog, I need to keep the same hours as Americans, which previously meant not heading to bed until 4 or 5am. Obviously staying up this late and then trying to get to the office would result in a zombie like Chris turning up, which would not look too good, nor really give my students a fair deal. We will have to see how it goes, however today I found out that rather than an 8.45am start, I can leave an hour later, as the girl was expecting a 10am start, not 9am as I was informed.
