Ignore This Man!

Category: Friends,KazakhstanChrisM @ 2:24 am

or at least remember that the video was made with tongue firmly in cheek…

It appears that Lucky’s PC really is dead, I was hoping I’d be able to offer some remote technical support over the phone, and magic some life back into it, but there we go. I guess I was just being greedy, aiming for three in one day.

To those wondering when I’ll stop pimping all his videos, when I see enough of a rise in his subscriber count, or I run out of older videos that I’ve not yet linked to or embedded. Get used to it basically πŸ™‚

Subsequently, Razors Were Involved

Category: Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 1:30 am

This is the intro to the weekly vlog series from Jason/Lucky, down in Almaty. Also a short interview with one of the entrants to this year’s Mongol Rally. The same rally that the famous ‘Tupac In Kazakhstan’ video came from. Hmm, I thought I had posted that video already. Can’t seem to find it in my archives anywhere. More than likely it is hiding in one of the draft posts for this blog, or a series of bookmarked tabs in Firefox. I’ve got Kazakh related news articles from early 2008 in my Bookmarks menu. Not a lot of point in posting about most of those, I guess.
So, why haven’t I embedded Lucky’s video in this post? Because I want you to explore his YouTube channel for yourself. Once you’re knocked over by his style and content, leave a comment on a video or two, and consider subscribing πŸ™‚

Shopping At Ramstore or Astikzhan?

Category: Kazakhstan,PersonalChrisM @ 1:22 am

If you shop at a Ramstore shop, or Astikzhan store, here in Astana, PLEASE be careful with your receipts, if you pay by card. Irina was just going through her purse throwing out old docs, when she noticed that the stores stupidly have their c/card terminals print out your FULL credit card number, the expiry date, and worse, even your name! So, burn or rip into rice-sized shreds before you bin them.

Russian And Kazakh Schools In Kazakhstan

Category: Kazakhstan,VideosChrisM @ 1:19 am

Jason’s PC is apparently broken right now, so I doubt we’ll see any new YouTube videos for a while. I have been catching up with his back catalogue of films, and drafting posts on those I though people who hadn’t been to Kazakhstan, or even some locals, might find interesting.
This one is on Russian vs. Kazakh schools, here in Kazakhstan. If you have no interest in Central Asia or children, you can probably skip this one. That said, if those conditions apply to you, I’d probably wonder why you’re reading this site in the first place πŸ™‚

Anti-Bling?

Category: Kazakh Driving,KazakhstanChrisM @ 11:34 pm

OK, so this one is out of order compared to the other Lucky21842 videos I’ve been catching up on, but I wanted to embed it now in case I forgot and closed the tabs down in Firefox on Monday when we return home. So, if you haven’t already seen them, there are a lot of YouTube videos that feature elite vehicles and excessive car accessories, parading up and down (and occasionally crashing) Almaty (& a couple of Astana) streets. The video below is a sort of antidote to such clips.

If you click the video, you’ll be taken to the proper page for it, where you can check out his other videos and see the comments left by other YouTube videos. I can understand where 777kuku777 (and indeed Jason/Lucky himself) is coming from when 777kuku777 says

Wahaha, you are so right about the Almaty cars, personally I don’t see the point of those videos. If it’s your car, then do whatever you want with it, make a video for you tube and what-not, otherwise, waste of time. P.S. Dude you being a gangsta is priceless though! Oh and next time for your version of almaty cars use some local songs would be even? funnier:)

However, if I was aware of the sort of media attention that Kazakhstan attracted in some of the tabloids abroad, and I felt proud of Almaty/Astana/Kazakhstan as well, I would want to make sure that people understood that cars were not pulled by donkeys, and that in all likelihood, there were more ΓΌber-expensive dream machines parading around Almaty (at least) than in the European/American city of your average YouTube viewer…

Yes, I could have just left this as a comment on the video, BUT… 1) I’m currently signed into GMail. Which is tied into my old banned YouTube account. I’d have had to sign out, delete all Google related cookies, sign into YouTube, leave a comment, then re-sign into Gmail (I haven’t yet set up a separate FireFox profile on Ira’s Mum’s PC). Unless you have a banned YouTube account, you have no excuse – go check all the videos out, leave comments, and if you like Lucky’s output as much as me (you there, stop sniggering at the back), consider subscribing …. oh and 2) I ramble too much. Youtube comments are restricted to around 1000/1500 characters? I normally exceed that length. It is a miracle of modern science/txt speak & deliberate lazy spelling that I ever manage to convey anything in a single tweet!

Over 21 And Not In Public !?!

Category: KazakhstanChrisM @ 6:07 pm

I guess I recently focused on the no smoking in public places law changes here in Kazakhstan, but thanks to Lucky21842, I have discovered more shocking news…
You can no longer officially drink in public, and they have raised the drinking age to 21! Yes, really. I’ll not embed the video this time, as I want you to actually click across and watch a few of his videos on YouTube itself. Go on, off you go, leave a comment, consider subscribing. I’ll wait.

….

Look, I’ve got all day, and all night if necessary, trust me, I’m way more stubborn than you.

OK, compromise, go and open the video in a new tab, and if you promise to switch to it after reading this post, we’ve found a good compromise.

So, I realised why this news slightly surprised me – when we went to the Kazakhstan v Croatia match at Astana’s new stadium, they discovered DanD had bought a couple of beers with him. Luckily they didn’t pass the metal detector over me, so my hip flask got through OK. Now, one of party definitely wanted to walk on and get into the grounds quickly, but that is just because he is an ancient, old, moaning man, who probably never even reads this site πŸ™‚ DanD and I decided that two unopened bottles of beer were just too much of a waste to dump, so we opened them up and chugged them down, before re-presenting our tickets to the street patrollers guarding the entrance. During this time, with a good dozen or so of them hanging around next to us, not a single ‘NYET’ was uttered.

However, I can report that the new smoking law was enforced a lot better. At half-time I left my seat, exited the building and walked on into the fresh air, under the night sky. Lighting up a Parliament, a guard quickly came and told me it was not allowed. Outside. In the fresh air. When I asked where it was OK, he told me the toilets. Inside. No extractor fan, no purifiers. Not even that many people using the toilet, just a lot of smokers!

Almaty Begs Astana For Publicity ;)

Category: Kazakhstan,VideosChrisM @ 5:18 pm

So, Lucky21842 asked me (via his twitter account) to give a quick heads up to my readers on his 7 days of VLogging. I think we’re roughly half way through them already, so make sure you click the first link in this post to visit his channel, and watch some more. The embedded video below was his introduction to the series of V-Logs, and as I get through watching the others, I’ll be sure to post any that made me laugh / cry / feel some love πŸ™‚ I may even decide on a spelling of the abbreviated form of Video Logging to stick to!

Oh, and although you’ll often find this request in his info section for each video, if you have a YouTube account and find Jason/Almaty or Kazakhstan interesting, consider adding the video as a favourite, rating it or just subscribing to his account.

Thanks to Irina for spotting this photo opportunity whilst I was out of our flat. No posing was involved, and luckily Muska didn’t run away or re-position herself when Ira grabbed the camera to take the shot…

Hot Water!!!

Category: Kazakhstan,Personal,WeatherChrisM @ 1:20 pm

For the first time in over half a year, we have hot water being supplied to us by the people that run our apartment blocks! When we returned from Britain back in May, we installed a water heater in the second bathroom so we could easily bathe Anna etc., but the kitchen water supply was on a different pipe, so whenever we did the washing up, we had to go and fill the washing up bowl with water from the taps in the bathroom.
No hot water (because a lot of other residents owed a LOT of money to the company (something shocking like $130,000!), and so the company couldn’t afford to buy the diesel to power the boilers) also meant no heating – not such a problem in the summer when temperatures can occasionally peak at 40 degrees centigrade, but as winter draws nearer, the electric fire re-borrowed from the in-laws wasn’t really going to cut it, in terms of keeping Anna warm, and the air conditioner unit has a nice warm air function, but can’t be used once outside temperatures are below freezing. So far the hot water coming out the taps is a little orange still, which will soon pass, and the radiators aren’t that much better than room temperature, but there is at least hope πŸ™‚
