Tom Plus Afghans = Kyrgyzstan!

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 8:35 pm

I have been meaning to write a post on this subject for a while, but did not get around to it until now. Apologies Tom.
Anyway, as long term readers may recall Tom Toomey live here in Astana for a while, and we regularly met up to get drunk and eat too much have deep philosophical discussions whilst very drunk.
He returned to America earlier this year, and carried on blogging whilst there. It was good to be able to keep up to speed with his life. However, he recently went to Afghanistan (that most friendly of places to be if you are American!), for his regular annual trip to pick up some young men. And women. Perhaps I should clarify? Rather than any sort of romantic quest, he takes Afghan teenagers to Kyrgyzstan for a summer camp. Although British readers will probably only have come across the concept of summer camps through films and TV shows, I have been assured that this really does occur, and is not just some Hollywood invention ;).
So, if you would like to read Tom’s posts, head on over to The LifeOf2Me, and do make sure you read the older posts as well; whereas this blog tends to be random thoughts from the top of my head, his is seriously well written, if not deadly serious subject matter 🙂

PS He is a friend, not a business associate, so this post is not sponsored in any way, I would just really like any readers of mine who have not yet come across his blog to do check it out. Just don’t forget to come back here as well. I’m cool with polygamy 🙂

For Steve – iPAQ Basics

Category: Friends,Personal,Windows MobileChrisM @ 3:44 am

In a similar vein to the previous post for Alex’s bro, this post is being written as a friend needs some help, and I am too appalled at the thought of typing it all into a messenger window, only to need it again in the future. I hope some other random person will one day find this post through a search engine, and find the contents useful. For anyone else, please indulge me a moment, normal random postings will resume shortly 😉

Firstly, some basic terminology / concepts to get a grip of, before proceeding.

PPC – For the purposes of this post, PPC can be safely assumed to refer to a Windows Mobile powered Pocket PC, such as an iPAQ.
RAR or ZIP files – These can be safely opened on your PC. See later for details.
EXE files – These are normally installation programs that will use ActiveSync to install a program for you automatically, the next time you plug your PPC into it’s cradle or USB lead. However, occasionally, you will find an EXE file that produces an error on your PC, when you try to run it. It may state something like ‘Not A Valid Win32 Application’. If this is the case, don’t despair, it is simply a program meant to run directly on your PPC, not your PC
CAB file – do NOT ever open or extract these files on your PC. In that path heart ache does lay. Follow instructions below.
Sync – for the purposes of this post, any mention of sync refers to you plugging your PPC into your PC. Whether it be via a cradle, USB lead, bluetooth or WiFi (if you have an old version of ActiveSync, before such usefulness was disabled), the end result is the same – the little circle in your system tray, that belongs to ActiveSync, should eventually go green, and stop rotating.
Anyway, back to the main reason for this post – how to install programs…

Open ONLY RAR or ZIP files on your PC :
Extract them somewhere temporarily (don’t delete until you know for certain program is working, not just as a demo, if you have ‘purchased’ a full version)

IF, and ONLY IF the extracted files is a CAB, then copy it via to your PPC (see below)
Always check the included documentation, but you can normally leave any other files on your PC – TXT NFO DOC files etc

How to copy CAB files?
Either eject your SD memory card, and put it in card reader in your PC, then copy the CAB file as you would any other type
OR plug your PPC into it’s cradle or USB lead, make sure ActiveSync says Synced or Connected. Right Click green circle icon in your PC’s system tray, and select ‘explore’ OR open the ActiveSync main window, select the File Menu, then ‘explore’
In either case navigate to My Windows Mobile-based Device (or words similar), then Storage Card, then copy the required file(s) as you would to any other directory or drive, such as a memory stick.
What now? Now open your favourite file explorer program on your PPC, navigate to the SD card, and THEN you can open the CAB file. It will install the program semi-automatically for you. When given a choice between the internal memory or your SD card, there are two factors to consider before deciding which location is best. In almost all cases, a large program should only be installed on the SD card. If the program is small, but is not needed often, or not likely to require fast transfers to operate normally, again install it to the SD card. If the program is something that will automatically load each time your PPC is started up, or is very small AND needs fast transfers or access times, ONLY then install to SD cards. Other may argue with this approach, but over time, you will find a few programs that give you no option as to where they will be installed – leave your PPC’s internal memory for those times. Also, the internal memory is dynamically split between storage space and operating memory. As a rough analogy, imagine you could use some of your PC’s 2Gb of RAM as a storage area (yes a RAM Drive before any geeks giggle and point). Now imagine you filled that 2Gb with crap you didn’t need very often. There would be little space left for anything interesting, such as large buffers or game playing resources.

If you happen to have found a PPC EXE file within your extracted RAR or ZIP file, copy them in the same manner as I mentioned above, except you will need to create a directory for the EXE file somewhere on your PPC first. You can dump it anywhere, but it makes it easier to spring clean / trouble shoot an issue if each application has its own distinct directory.

If the file you have is a normal PC EXE file, then when you run it, the program will actually copy and run the CAB file it contains for you automatically, the next time you sync your PPC.

For Alex’s Bro – DV Video Transfer And YouTube

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 2:57 am

Re. your camcorder and achieving the best results on YouTube.
I have made this post in case I ever need to pass on these instructions to someone else – rather than trying to remember it all and re-type it, I can just pass them the url to this post…

Anyway, you mentioned you use Nero 7, my example involves Nero Vision Express from Nero 6. If you can not find the equivalent functions or options in your version, drop me a line and I will try and sort it

Onto the steps

Continue to use whichever program you are most comfortable with to transfer the the video from your camcorder to your computer’s hard drive, via the FireWire cable.

However, when selecting the file format and other related options, you want the resolution to be the same as the original (probably in the region of 720 x 576)
You also do NOT want ANY compression to be used at this point – this should be the last step in the process. Why? Because each time you use a codec to encode video data into a smaller file size, you will obviously be losing some quality. You want to leave this stage until the very end. If you do not see an option for DV or DV-AVI in your current program, try changing the options for the video codec used to NONE or NO COMPRESSION or FULL FRAMES

At this point, you should now have a reasonably large AVI file on your hard drive somewhere. Just double check that the resolution has not been changed at all, and that no codec was used. (GSpot is quite good for that, Alex has all the programs you need on a DVD we burned whilst she was over here.)

Now how you cut up the video is your choice. I personally like to use VirtualDub (again grab a copy of Alex’s DVD for it), as it is no frills, and has not crashed on me, unlike Nero’s programs. There are other options, such as Pinnacle’s Studio, or even, if completely desperate Windows Movie Maker 2. However you choose to cut the video so only the scenes you need remain, now is the time to choose a new resolution and which codec to use, unless you intend to insert text and/or use fades / dissolves / wipes etc. between scenes within the video. If this is the case, place those, THEN proceed to the next step.

For uploading to YouTube you want to choose the closest resolution to 320 x 240 as you can, and I personally would recommend using either the DivX or xVid codec. Both xVid and DivX have settings for bitrates (basically how much quality you desire), please see the end of this post for further detail.
When it comes to the audio side of things, if you do not require high fidelity, 96KBit/sec, mono should suffice. Anything that involves content other than spoken word may need a higher bit rate, and if the music is not just background, or the video involves movement from one side to the other, stereo may make more sense obviously.

If you want to keep an archive of the video, you can either burn the original, uncompressed AVI to a DVD, OR save a 720 x 576 DivX/xVid in the same way you did for the YouTube version. Just make sure you are working with the original at this point – if you encode the 320 x 240 video file to 720 x 576, you will not have a higher quality video, just a larger file-sized one. Always work with original data, when you can.

So why bother with all this if you are just uploading it to YouTube? Although they can convert the video for you automatically, their results will rarely match the quality you can achieve by processing these stages yourself. You may need to experiment a little to find a good balance between time & effort used and quality of results achieved, and also, as previously mentioned, between the codec bitrate settings used and the end result. As a purely arbitrary example, if selecting a quality level of 9 results in a 54 megabyte file, when no extra detail is discernible, when compared to a video produced when a quality level of 8 is used, it makes no sense to waste hard drive space, CPU time taken & bandwidth in transferring the file over the internet. Which reminds me, I think xVid has a sliding scale, the default is 4, 7 or 8 should be more than enough for YouTube, anyway it operates in the same way as specifying a bit rate would.

I hope some of this helps, let me know if I’ve missed something, or parts are not clear.

Are You Listening Alex?

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 1:02 am

Apparently there will be a new X-Files film made, with both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returning to their famous roles.
Although I am pretty sure David had previously stated he would not be working in any more X-Files productions, as he did not want to be type cast. Oooops.
Fans will be happy to hear Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz are both going to be on board, so if you liked the original serieses, seriess, series’s seasons, it looks as though you have something to look forward to…

Sharp Swords Swishing

Category: Friends,Personal,VideosChrisM @ 8:30 pm

Thanks to Alex over at Dryad Musings for the heads up on her brother’s YouTube videos. If you met him in the street, with his dog in tow, your first reaction might be to get out of his way quickly, buy he is a good bloke, and passionate about things that interest him. As an example, he received a Katana (I believe from Alex) for his birthday, and in the three videos below, you can see him demonstrating his Tameshigiri (test cutting of inanimate objects with a good blade) skills.

First we have a pineapple, balanced on a table…

Next we have a mid-air pineapple, suspended from the ceiling…

Finally, a water-melon that is again balanced on the table…

For anyone concerned about waste, he is also a pretty fine chef, so I am sure the sliced fruits were put to good use afterwards 🙂

I will hopefully be contacting Alex sometime soon, re. passing on details regarding how to get YouTube to display the videos with a higher quality, next time he uploads some…

Last Of The Alex Photos

Category: Friends,Kazakhstan,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 4:59 am

OK, we have finally reached the end of the photos with this following shot…

Alex Ira Chris Just Arrived Astana Kazakhstan June 2007

I believe this was taken the day Alex arrived, after her little hiccup in Kaliningrad airport. If you want to read a little more about her trip over here, I’d recommend you go and read her blog – Dryad Musings.
We setup the the site whilst she was here, and Alex has already added a couple more posts since returning to her home. If you fancy reading posts that are a little more well written, rather than the normal stream of consciousness rubbish you normally find on my personal posts here :), then consider adding her to your bookmarks or even adding her feed to your reader.

Fountains And Horse Milk

Category: Eating Out,Friends,Kazakhstan,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 1:37 am

Chris Alex Fountain Astana Kazakhstan
Here we have a photo on a hot day, with Alex in front of a fountain. It was definitely nice to cool off your feet in the water. We tried to stay out of the midday sun, so as to avoid the hottest part of the day. At least that was my excuse for talking, drinking and watching stuff on the TV late into the dawn, then getting up late.

Alex Kumis Ali-Ba-Ba Astana Kazakhstan
Here we have Alex being adventurous, drinking kumis (fermented horse milk) at the Ali-Ba-Ba restaurant. We chose a Kazakh style table, similar in height to the Japanese with some throw cushions for sitting on. Nice for chilling out and relaxing…

In-Laws Meet Alex

Category: Friends,Kazakhstan,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 9:46 pm

Just noticed I appear to be posting these pictures in reverse order – the earlier posts have the most recent piccies, and this post has photos from towards the beginning of Alex’s stay here. I have deliberately left out quite a few days and subjects, as I want Alex to have them on her blog, especially as most are from her camera!

Alex Irina Chris Astana Kazakhstan

Anyway, that is a shot of the three of us in the back garden, probably just having being fed a lot of nice food, with a little to drink.

Alex Mother In Law Chris Aynak Astana Kazakhstan

Here we have the ferocious guard dog, poised to rip out Alex’s throat, as she is unknown to Aynak. Well, OK, it might look like she is just licking us there, but I am sure she would have been prepared to defend her master’s property at the drop of a hat…

A Day At The Races

Category: Eating Out,Friends,Kazakhstan,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 9:26 pm

Whilst Alex was here, and during the week long celebrations for Astana being the capital city, and President Nazarbayev’s birthday, we all went to an afternoon of events over at a new race track they have built near Astana.

Kokpar Kyz Kuu Astana Kazakhstan 2007

During the day, we saw a horse race, some fine equine skills (see above) that involved gymnastics on horses, and a game of goat polo. In case you have not come across it before, this is a game where two opposing teams, who are on horses, wrestle a goat carcass from the ground, then try to place it in the opposing team’s goal. The other team obviously want to stop them from doing this, and so block the players’ horses, and try to steal the goat for themselves.
Luckily, the new grand stand had a roof, so we did not over heat or burn on the fine hot & sunny day. They even gave out free beshparmak!

Restaurant Vodka And Monopoly

Category: Eating Out,Friends,Kazakhstan,Personal,PicturesChrisM @ 1:23 am

When Oleg and Alex met up, we all went out for a meal in the evening, and tried out the outside section above two of our ‘regular’ restaurant. The service was friendly, and the waitress even spoke a little English with us. Anyway, here is a quick snap shot of the table…
Alex Oleg Chris Irina Astana Kazakhstan

Alex Oleg Chris Irina Monopoly Vodka Astana Kazakhstan
Later on we went back to the flat, had a little to drink, talked, and played a game. When the sun came up, we decided to end the ‘evening’ and slept in a little late that day 🙂
Anyway, hopefully Ira and I will meet up with Oleg again before he returns to Moscow…
