Plenitude of Past Pictures

Category: Dasha&Kittens,Eating Out,Friends,PicturesChrisM @ 2:44 am

I finally got around to transferring the photos from Ira’s camera onto my PC this evening. So you should expect some shots of… DaveG’s party, a few cute shots of Kara and Muska hugging, a couple of visits to the Irish pub (including one when they were had a competition where you could win prizes if you ordered pints of Kilkenny), and some more recent shots of Tishka’s kittens. I also have a lot of news-related posts I need to make, as I want to try and clear down the backlog before we move back to Clydach in a week or so.

(Yes I realise that ‘plethora’ tends to have negative overtones when people read it, but you try thinking of a word beginning with P that means lots of or a bug bunch 🙂 )
[edit]
OK, I gave up and used an online thesaurus in the end. I turned down plenty and pack in favour of plenitude…

Catchup 3

Category: Friends,PicturesChrisM @ 4:23 am

Here we have a couple from back in June. One evening, there was the QBP (Queen’s Birthday Party) celebrations at a hotel, with BG’s (British Gas’s) charity event immediately following it.
The first shot is at the QBP (where delicious battered cod’n’chips was served), with a speech being given, and the second shot was taken at the BG event. We’d moved upstairs to some comfy sofas, rather than stand around the dance floor. You’ll find DaveG and Shymkent Dan featuring here…

Tom’s Blog

Category: FriendsChrisM @ 3:04 am

Readers of our friend Tom’s blog ( http://lifeof2me.blogspot.com/ ) may have noticed that posting has slowed down a little recently. With his multiple projects (teaching, making and selling his clothing lines and contra dancing), it looks as though letting us know about all the New York movers and shakers has taken a back seat. Can’t really blame him, I’m just looking forward to reading more regular posts when the next sales season is over 🙂
You’ll need to click the August and July archive links for the foreign (Aghanistan and Tajikistan) posts. Quite why blogspot/blogger blogs don’t have the Previous/Older post link (like most WordPress blogs) at the bottom of each page I’ve never understood. Maybe it is a theme dependent option, and most don’t have it?

Construction Freeze & Outdated Or Incomplete Report

Category: Friends,In The Media,KazakhstanChrisM @ 5:21 am

So here we have a video I recorded from the World News Report – Business Edition from the BBC World channel. (I did try to find one officially uploaded earlier in the day, but couldn’t locate one, so I used my AV card). Anyway, our friend Natalya Kim lives in Almaty, and as I don’t see her city often mentioned on the news, I thought I’d show it here. It contains information on the global financial crisis and how it effects Almaty residents, especially those involved in the construction industry.
I was a little surprised that the correspondent didn’t make mention of the Prime Minister and President’s recent speeches on the matter – you can read more on this over at EurAsiaNet’s article.

I suppose it is possible this was recorded a week or so ago, and they didn’t have time/didn’t think to re-dub it?

[edit]
OK, so that video was originally uploaded and ready for embedding in this post an hour or so ago. Then I checked it’s YouTube page, and the audio had pitch shifted down a few octave! I’d not originally had the speakers on as I didn’t want to risk waking Ira, servers me right for not (quietly) checking it before uploading I suppose. This one should be ok, and don’t blame my poor AV card for the video quality – thats down to YouTube’s conversion process I’m afraid. Better go and find out how you get those ‘Watch In High Quality’ links on your uploaded videos I suppose.

Miss Lilly

Category: Eating Out,Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 3:54 pm

[EDIT]
Amended time for cocktail happy hour. Thanks to Mel for the correction.

I have been meaning to post about Miss Lilly, an American singer who has taken up residence in Northwind (is that the right term? She will be there six nights a week for six months, anyway.) We have been to see her three times so far, and not been disappointed yet 🙂
Anyway, I promised her on Friday night that I would post details about what is going on this Monday, so…

Monday 20th October 2008
Northwind (“English Pub”)
Prospekt Respublika
Astana

Now I had little bit too much to drink on Friday (thanks to Dave, Mel, and Dave’s friend’s friend for getting me home safely), but I’m pretty sure that Miss Lilly said that this Monday there would be 50% off cocktails from 7pm-8pm, and a little later there would be karaoke. CORRECTION: Either 7-9 or 8-10 IS THE CORRECT TIME.
I could be off on the timings though, so do check at the bar first. I’m hoping that Ira and I can make it, and possibly bring the in-laws.
I tried to search online for some photos or videos of Miss Lilly performing, but can’t find any right now. I think I have some (very blurry) pics on my phone, so when I get back to the flat I’ll upload any that are vaguely useful.

Possible Timetable Change

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 9:15 pm

To friends and family back home, it looks as though the original mid-November date for moving back is now a little too optimistic. Although we would obviously like to get back as soon as possible, completing the paperwork over here is a lot more complex than it should be, and a few other factors mean we are now looking at coming back some time in December. Luckily we have not bought plane tickets yet, so there is no financial hangover attached to this change in plans. Whatever date we finally arrive, we’re both really looking forward to seeing everyone (relatively) soon.

WebSwami News

Category: FriendsChrisM @ 11:12 pm

Another post for a good friend (Gavin Ng), so no $ involved 🙂

Breaking the Barriers in Language and Distance Learning — Armstrong-Hilton Launches WebSwami 1.0

WebSwami is an online innovative language and communications training system, combining compelling interactive activities, personalized video feedback, rapid course development tools, and a powerful student tracking interface. The system offers the best of both worlds: new innovations in e-learning with the personalization and intimacy of the traditional teacher-student classroom relationship.

Hong Kong, (PRWEB) October 14, 2008 — Armstrong-Hilton Limited, the language and communications training company, today announced the launch of WebSwami 1.0.

Built on Adobe’s Flash Technology, WebSwami incorporates enhanced mainstream e-learning activities as well as a number of unique features:

  • Straight-to-Server WebCam Video Recording – Both instructor and learner benefit from unique video recording capabilities, used for creating activities and giving performance feedback, and practicing realistic real-time simulations respectively.

  • Voice Graph    Voice Graph – WebSwami includes a spectrograph which highlights changes in voice intonation as well as the more traditional stress fluctuations, resulting in more accurate pronunciation, effective subtle expression and increased fluency.

  • Centralized Student Tracking – Instructors access unmarked exercises from all assigned lessons and courses in one centralized list, ordered by submission time – saving time and ensuring prompt review/feedback.

  • Personalized Feedback – Video, audio and text feedback messages, from all courses and instructors, are delivered to the learner as soon as they log-in through a centralized message in-box to help maintain motivation and promote language self-awareness. Also, for the first time, enabling instructors to incorporate gestures and physical demonstrations, making e-learning as natural as classroom teaching.

  • Easy Course Creation – All instructors are empowered to create material quickly and easily by using the straight-to-server webcam recording capability, 1-click activity generation and a centralized course management system.

WebSwami’s lead developer and designer, Gavin Ng said, "By using Flash Multimedia & video recording, we’ve taken the next leap forward in language and communications training. So far other systems have avoided integrating video recording, perhaps due to technical difficulty or believing video is inappropriate for learning spoken language. In contrast, we believe video is the missing ingredient in making online training more effective, more personal, and most importantly — more motivating; especially when you take into account how poor completion and retention rates generally are in e-learning."

According to Managing Director, Peter Day, "With the release of WebSwami, not only are we making our mark on the training industry, we are enabling educators to make a greater impact on learners with cutting edge video and multimedia technology, 24/7 online course and audio/video support (without needing instructors on standby) and by making any classroom practice benefits available even to distance learners, thus increasing revenue and reach."

"Organizations also benefit from a much lower cost of entry. The web is much larger in scale than traditional language labs, so we’re offering the freedom of affordable perpetual licenses for hundreds to even infinite concurrent users; freeing institutions from annual renewal headaches and backward restrictions. With Flash being ubiquitous on every web browser, learners can really ‘learn-on-the-go’ with zero hardware investment." When pressed for expectations about this launch, Mr Day replied, "In early demos our customers have been stunned by the interactivity and ease of the system; so much so that that they’ve even seen applications beyond our initial designs, such as communications, sales and product training, and even dramatic arts and sign language learning. So the next few months will be very exciting, as we roll out even more features for WebSwami."

To learn more about WebSwami and to arrange a demonstration please visit WebSwami.com or contact Mr Gavin Ng directly.

A Tip Of The Hat To Tip’d

Category: FriendsChrisM @ 5:46 pm

(NOT a sponsored post in any way – a friend helped to set up the site, so I’m happy to hand out a freebie 🙂 )

So what is Tip’d? From what I can tell so far, it appears to be a niche social bookmarking system. In the same way that Sphinn specialises in news for the SEO community, Tip’d (hmm, I want to put Tip’d’s, but that just looks wrong) main focus is on financial stories. Like other schemes, it is community led, meaning other users get to decide which submitted stories are worth reading, and therefore make it to the front page. Unlike some niche social bookmarking schemes, members are welcome to submit their own post/stories, though obviously spamming will lead deletions and/or bans.
In terms of being public, it is still early days, so if you want to check this out, and have a say in how the community evolves, head on over to tip’d today.

Thanks To Gavin

Category: Friends,VideosChrisM @ 1:10 am

Why? For bringing the following video to my attention…

I have a slight liking for a lot of a cappella songs, and anything based on Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” obviously has a good start 🙂

I browed through my hard drive’s MP3 collection after watching this, and appear to have mis-laid my Flying Pickets albums, so I’ll try and track down the originals again next time I’m in Clydach. Rather than talk about all the fuss over one of the photos used in The Richter Scales’ “Here Comes Another Bubble”, just click on the link provided in the More Info section if you want to find out one side to the story.

The Celt Awakes!

Category: Friends,PersonalChrisM @ 11:15 pm

Head on over to the Celt Photographic blog to read a series of three new posts from JohnK. Specifically, you’ll need to hit the September Archives to see the latest words and photos from John – his front page is currently occupied by a random photo extracted from his previous posts (hit the refresh button in your browser or F5 on your keyboard to see a different picture each time the front page loads).
For a sneak peak at the soon to be in use gallery, hit the Celt Studio Photographic Gallery. Right now there are just a couple of photos uploaded, and the theme may change in the future, but if you want to get an idea of his shots, head on over.
