I had a welcome surprise when I woke up this morning – Irina has arranged for AlmaTV’s cable TV service to be installed on Friday! As the digital version is available in our area, we should be able to watch some of the channels with the original English audio, instead of Russian. Obviously Russian and Kazakh channels will just be in Russian or Kazakh, and I’m not sure about Eurosport/ESPN etc., but things like the Discovery Channels, National Geographic, CNN etc. should be great to catch up on.
I’ll post more details tomorrow when I know them.
Thank you Irina 🙂

Which package is that? We have some issues with Alma TV now–apparently we now get very very limited service with our present package through the KSK (but the price didn’t go down, of course). So we’re thinking of also getting a contract directly with AlmaTV.

I’ll post proper details once I’m at home again, currently in Chubary. Short version is make sure you can get the digital signal piped in, analogue has no English audio option on the relevant channels, and I think we went for ‘Prestige’ in terms of packages. There are obviously cheaper ones available, but it isn’t too steep, especially compared to NTV satellite cards. Yearly rental of the STB was something silly like $5, and our monthly bill is something like $20, I think.
