BBC News Suggestions

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 12:42 am

A couple of quick suggestions I’ve been meaning to mention for a while

1) The links on the right hand side of many articles, linking to similar stories, should include articles written AFTER the original story, not just previous ones.

2) The streaming video does not follow the standards set by many others – if your internet connection is too busy, or just slow, the stream is not buffered. This means that the video stops every nine seconds or so of footage, whilst the next section is loaded. Similarly, once a video has been played once, it does not appear to be reused should the video be rewatched immediately. If either of these situations were altered, videos could be watched smoothly by those of us without fat connections.

Oscar Rescues Cold Balls

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 8:33 pm

Fife-based dog Oscar had a surprise for the vet who examined him. His owner had taken Oscar in for a check up, after noticing that his stomach was rattling away. Although I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to anatomy, I hope I’d have done the same had our cats made un-natural noises.

Oscar Ball Eater

It turns out Oscar has been gobbling down golf balls when out on walks, and not just stopped after discovering that they weren’t too tasty. A total of 13 balls were recovered, and the dog now sports a muzzle, in an attempt to prevent further surgeries being required. There was originally a photo of the golf balls in question in the BBC article when I bookmarked it, but it seems to have been removed.
Having assumed that this would be a pretty unusual tale, I found three other related dog surgery stories at the site – see the articles linked at the top right corner for tights and underwear munching mutts.

This is the Wartime Broadcasting Service!

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 4:27 am

Check out the (apparently authentic) script that BBC news readers were to use should a nuclear attack ever have been launched at Britain. (You will need Adobe Reader or another application capable of displaying PDF files to read that link.)

Stay In Your Homes

Although the BBC article mentions that the script was written back in the 70s, it does not mention when it was deemed un-necessary or too dated – is there likely to be a replacement that we will not hear (hopefully) for another 30 years, or given that the (original) cold war is over, do we simply not have an alternative plan for the BBC et al?

Russian Soldier Exiled For Video

Category: In The Media,VideosChrisM @ 2:26 pm

I’ve just read an article over at the BBC news web site about a soldier who recorded a cover of the Eminem (featuring Dido) track Stan. In much the same way as the original features a disgruntled young man writing a letter, the soldier’s was supposed to be a letter to the minister of defence , regarding the unsavoury conditions fellow soldiers had to endure, despite previous assurances that living conditions would improve. It would appear that he became frustrated to the lack of a reply to a previous conventional letter, and so wrote (possibly in May 2008?) a new ? ?????? ?? ??? ???????? ??????? in the form of a video uploaded to RuTube.ru .
In case you want to watch the full video, here it is…

It looks as though relying on Google to translate ‘a letter to the minister of defense’ (or defence, depending on which variant of English you use 🙂 ) was a little inaccurate, as the video is simply titled ?????? ???????? ??????? .

Belated Update

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 8:53 pm

As previously mentioned, I’m not exactly in tip-top health still, so please excuse random blips in the posting regularity here. Anyway, I just wanted to post a quick link to the BBC article on the hotel that had refused a room to a soldier now apologising and ‘clarifying’ what had gone wrong.

Cpl Thomas Stringer Tomos
Cpl Tomos Stringer, the man that was (apparently mistakenly) refused a bed once the hotel realised he was in the army.

See the downright disgusting post three below this for the original story, and for a few differing views from this blog’s visitors. Having read some reviews (posted before this all blew up), it looks as though any people who stayed away from the hotel were not necessarily missing out on that much, quality-wise.

Downright Disgusting

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 2:52 pm

[EDIT]
Please see here for an update.

Morning everyone. I’ll hopefully be back to posting regularly soon – I’m almost recovered from a bug/flu/bad cold that I picked up on the flight back to Kazakhstan last week (Turkish Airlines are sadly not alone in the pitiful amount of fresh air (as opposed to the germ-laden recycled stuff) used on their flights).

Anyway, onto the reason I’ve made this post. First, please read this story from the BBC website. A brief summary is that a member of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces was refused a room at a hotel in Woking. Apparently it is the management’s and/or hotel’s policy not to accept military personnel!

Corporal Tomos Stringer

As long term readers of this blog will know, I am not a supporter of the war in Iraq or Afghanistan per se; however, when it comes down to the lives of those individual people who voluntarily sign up to protect their country, I believe we should show some respect. Support the personnel, even if you don’t agree with the politics. I can only guess that the policy of the hotel has come from previous problems they have experienced with squaddies relaxing a little too much. If so, I can understand how large groups of physically fit men who are trained to fight would not be ideal guests. This does not appear to have been the situation in this case though. One lone man, who was on leave from Afghanistan due to an injury, and was in the area to visit another injured soldier friend needed a place to lay his head and rest for the night. Having been refused a room, Corporal Tomos Stringer had to spend the night in his car.

(I believe the hotel is located in the centre of this map.)

I would ask all readers (especially those in the UK) to consider calling the hotel to register a complaint about this incident. If you live outside Britain, but still feel strongly enough, I can recommend using Skype (and purchasing some credit) to call the hotel – assuming your normal phone has high international call rates. This is what I did, and left a message for the duty manager. The lady answering the phone behaved in a professional manner, and I would ask any callers to remain civil and simply ask that their disgust with the management be registered and passed on to them.

The hotel’s phone number is (01483) 727100 , or if you are dialling internationally, +44 1483 727100 . Should you live in the Woking area, and have a few minutes spare to actually complain in person, their address is The Metro Hotel, Gwent House, Crown Sq, Woking, GU21 6HR. There are two different addresses listed by Google, with the same phone number, so I’m not sure whether one is simply a correspondence address.

If your job happens to include arranging overnight stays for staff in a hotel, then I would ask you to consider not using this hotel in the future.

If you do not feel anything wrong has occurred, I obviously respect your right to hold a different opinion, but thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Too Much RAM?

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 12:51 am

Nick Boing The Ram, Cardiff In David Palmer's House

Sorry, feel free to think of a better post title and leave it in the comments section 🙂

So why has a photographer placed a huge sheep (is a sheep that is male only referred to as a ram, or can it still be labelled as a sheep?) in some poor soul’s home? Simple, he didn’t… Nick Boing The Ram actually lives in David Palmer’s house. He was found as a lamb in the Cardiff area, and decided not to leave. Before any animal rights activists get ready to start protesting, the family have tried on multiple occasions to re-home Nick to a more traditional setting, but he doesn’t want to re-assimilate. Check out the BBC report for more details.

Reprieve For Misshapen Melons?

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 3:49 am

I remember a good few years back that the tabloids ran a bunch of stories proclaiming that bananas and cucumbers would have to be straight, apples perfectly round etc. all due to EU laws. Of course they had blown the story out of proportion, the regulations were put in place to ensure low quality merchandise was not mixed in with class a produce. However, in some cases this lead to perfectly good fruit and veg not being sold, and often disposed of. According to a BBC report, some fruit and vegetables will now be permitted in all shapes and sizes, providing they are labelled clearly as ‘for cooking use only’. Twenty six items of produce will have the regulations removed or relaxed, leaving just tomatoes, apples, lettuces, peaches and nectarines, pears, strawberries, citrus fruit, kiwi fruit, endives, sweet peppers and table grapes with the original laws in place.

Mashed Up Government

Category: In The MediaChrisM @ 7:09 pm

The British government is putting £20,000 into a competition to encourage people to create data mash ups, especially within education, criminal justice and health areas. The fact that ministers have taken on board advice and agreed to something relatively new as the process of mash ups is encouraging. I’m no New Labour zombie, as previous posts probably show, but this time around I’m happy to tip my hat their way. Check here for the BBC article. I already had a look round the FixMyStreet site, and although in some areas there haven’t been any updates on outstanding cases for a while, it was interesting to see what sort of things annoyed people in the different areas of Britain I’ve lived in. For example, near Ira’s old work, it would appear they still have problems with kids riding motorbikes on footpaths, and over in Gloucester, a naughty resident did not put out his rubbish on the right days. Apparently house prices weren’t too adversely affected 😉

Making Joints With Any Sort Of Tobacco Will Be Outlawed

Category: Amsterdam,In The MediaChrisM @ 4:54 am

MAKING? LMAO
See this BBC article for a rather large typo, or very misinformed journalist. Although the BBC World television report did not contain this inaccuracy, the fact that the online version wasn’t checked properly is quite astounding. The idea that the Dutch are banning people from rolling their spliffs with tobacco is laughable. In case you haven’t yet heard, the Netherlands are following most of Europe by banning smoking cigarettes (and in their case alone, joints with tobacco in) in enclosed public places. I still want to know whether they expect all smokers who prefer hash to weed to use pipes, but I guess I’ll have to wait a while before returning to Amsterdam to further my research. It is a tough job writing this blog 😉
