I need to speak to a friend before the weekend, to find out if their car is for sale or not. As you may have guessed, we are looking at buying one to use here in Astana sometime soon. Normally you just have a husband and wife with different priorities and preconceived ideas about makes and models, however with such a large investment as this, we need Ira’s parents’ help as well. This mean adding in another opinion, plus also taking on board the advice from his friends. (He hasn’t driven in a long time as his company provides a driver), whereas his friends are a lot more in tune with local issues re. servicing and parts availability.
Ideally (though unrealistically, price wise) I have been wanting a Subaru Impreza WRX or Mitsubishi Evo for years now, however a) they are just too pricey new, and the only ones we could afford second hand are either too high mileage, or suspiciously cheap (something major wrong or perhaps been in a nasty accident previously) and b) Irina doesn’t want too much power.
So, we are hoping to visit a few forecourts this Saturday (and assuming DaveG makes it to Kazakhstan, out the evening to catch up with him), just to get a feel for the cars that are available over here. There is the possibility of buying a new or second hand car in Germany and importing it over, mainly because the prices are more reasonable there. (Cars do not depreciate in value over here at anything like the same rate. Great if you’re wanting to sell your car, not so great if you’re just looking to buy). I’m wondering whether car salesman will be the same here in Astana as back in Britain, or whether they behave and look different? Perhaps bow ties are de rigueur as is a non-pushy approach to interacting with prospective clients?
Anyway, I’m looking forward to actually checking a few different models out in real life, as you can use Wikipedia, Top Gear’s site and google in general until the cows come home, but until you see a car for yourself from real life angles, with a good idea for scale, you can never be sure how you’ll feel about that model that caught your eye online.
As you may have guessed, it looks like my previous proclamation of “Me? Driving in this country? NEVER!” may well be over, but with Anna going to playgroup twice a week, food shopping and just visiting the in-laws each week, the cost of taxis is getting silly really, and during the winter at least, walking to most places is just not realistic. I had previously suggested buying an old Kamaz (big commercial truck) and fitting gun turrets, but locals think this wouldn’t go down well. Hey ho, time to compromise… perhaps “just” a train air horn?

Told Off By YouTube
Ooops, the BBC have complained to YouTube about my Top Gear upload. Never mind. It received around 6000 views last time I checked. Hope you all managed to view the clip of various motor homes being raced around an oval circuit. If not, keep an eye out on YouTube, there are still a few versions floating around. In the mean time, I apparently need to check through all my other videos, and remove any that also infringe copyrights. Either that, or wait for them to close my account and lose all the other vids.

Video For John
and any other motor home or Top Gear fans out there. I’ve ripped the section from Series 10 Episode 6 (last Sunday’s?) where Richard Hammon and James May team up with some Touring Car drivers to race various motor homes around an old track. That is if it ever completes uploading to YouTube… I’m glad I didn’t include the last segment (otherwise I would be waiting all night) that featured Jeremy Clarkson showing a behemoth of a motor home, big enough to hold a sports car in one it’s storage areas!
I still think the little red Toyota was a bit of a cheat, calling it a camper van clone maybe, but a proper motor home? Nope…

Hamster Night Time Crash
As you may already know, I’m a big fan of the BBC TV Motoring show Top Gear (see here for a few previous posts). Although BBC World does eventually broadcast a cut down version of the show via our satellite receiver, it does not feature the (mainly British) guests, and often cuts other funny sections. Luckily most of the shows are downloadable from the net, and so before we had ADSL, ChrisD would normally grab them for me.
Anyway, Richard Hammond (subject of a few posts last year when he had a 300mph+ crash in a jet ‘car’) has had another accident, though nothing like as serious this time. The show was recording the three presenters taking part in an endurance race over at Silverstone, when the car (which Richard was driving at the time) was crashed into by another vehicle. By the sound of the BBC news article, some media outlets are overplaying the seriousness of the crash, as the presenter seems fine, and even the car itself was repairable quite quickly.

Jeremy Clarkson’s Motorworld
Jeremy Clarkson’s Motorworld – Jeremy Clarkson
Despite not having seen the original TV series that this book is based upon, I do tend to like Jeremy’s style of presenting and writing. Aware of his own foibles, he still is very happy to talk about his greatest love, which is motoring. For those of you who have seen him in the Top Gear TV series, this isn’t simply a car review show in paper, it is so much more than that.
He travels around the world, to 12 different countries, and observes the different ways people interact with motor vehicles.
I do so wish he’d do an update on this series, and try and fit in a trip to Kazakhstan. (See my previous articles (You Drinking. Other People Driving , Driving Contd. and a few other shorter posts can all be found within the Kazakh Driving category on this blog) on the Kazakh driving style so prevalent over here.)
Enough shameless plugging of my own posts, back to the review :=>
From the khamic beliefs of some Indian drivers (seatbelts? why, if today is my day to die, it will happen anyway!) to the draconian laws in Switzerland, he takes a very light hearted look at the global relationship with cars. Although the book does now show its age in parts, I still believe it to be a worth read.

Clarkson On Cars
Jeremy Clarkson – Clarkson On Cars
Although this book isn’t original material, nor particularly recent, I still enjoyed reading through it. The book basically collects the best of all of his newspaper & magazine articles from the 80s until the mid 90s.
If you’ve not come across Jeremy before, he is Top Gear‘s main presenter.
Although obviously a petrol head, he does tend to write about motoring from the perspective of a man in the street, rather than a cars salesman or Formula F1 driver.
If you have a son/daughter/husband/wife who is into cars more than you, I’d recommend buying the book for them. Then read it yourself, and be pleasantly surprised at the quality of his writing, and the way he can relate seemingly complex motor issues to your average reader.
Oh and by the way, in case anyone is reading these reviews and wondering if I’m ever negative about a book, yes certainly, its just the ones I’ve reviewed so far I actually enjoyed…

A Couple Of Video Clips
I was catching up with some of the last 6 months of UK TV today, and came across these gems…
OK first one is Billie Piper, in Dr Who, with a moment of pure honesty :> …
Secondly we have James May, from Top Gear, proving his posh, slightly boring guy appearance is mis-leading …
This was just after Jeremy had read out a letter complaining about his comments regarding bus drivers, and James mentioned it was a lot easier, in his experience, to drive a bus than work on Top Gear.
Finally, we have a shot of James in his new series on Sky – Shark Attack, not exactly his normal brogues and sensible shirt…

Jumping On A Bandwagon
Found this article today on Richard Hammond and Top Gear, obviously inspired by the aformentioned’s crash. Couldn’t stand the guy’s attitude to be honest, but have a read and see what you think.
Also checked, and this site is now back down to #2 on Google, when searching for Chris Merriman. Not sure what went wrong, I’ve not lost any links to this site, I guess I’ll just have to live with the shame somehow ;>
I now have a Kazakh SIM card for my phone, msg me if you need the #. Got GPRS working for both of our phones, and can use them as bluetooth modems for the PC, which should keep me happy, and Irina happy, at least on my behalf…
Couple of days, and ChrisD will be over here; the weather has actually improved a little, but I’ve not told him yet, want to make sure he actually buys a coat (his first in over a decade!) and packs some warm clothes. I thought about not posting the weather info yet, but then remembered that he never reads this bloody thing anyway, so think we’re safe. Also Ira said the forecast is for the weather to get chilly again next week. Just hope the sunshine lasts long enough for him to experience it.

Recover Well, Richard Hammond
As most people will have heard by now, Top Gear’s presenter, Richard Hammond suffered serious injuries whilst recording footage for the show, in a rocket powered car. Hope he recovers to full health, and takes enough time off from public work to recuperate.
