More From Mr Johnson

Category: In The Media,PersonalChrisM @ 8:46 pm

Following on from yesterdays post, The Times Online has an article regarding more views from the UK Education Secretary (Alan Johnson). This time he is being criticised for suggesting Wikipedia is a good resource for school children.
Two minor points have already been raised in their comments section

1) The main critic in the article is the former Wikipedia guru & co-founder, who has gone on to setup what is effectively a rival to Wikipedia
2) Wikis are often ‘attacked’ where opinions are stated. That is to say, if you want to know how reputable a company is, you might not get a balanced view. HOWEVER, if you simply want to know how many days of rainfall a country had last year (for example) , Wikipedia can be of use.

Strike A Pose Miss…

Category: In The Media,PersonalChrisM @ 3:16 am

I’ve just finished reading a BBC report on the UK’s Education Secretary urging ISP & Web Sites to play a more pro-active role in curbing the rising problem of their services being used to harass both pupils and teachers. Check here for more info.
I had my fair share of teasing at school, but I was always fairly secure in the knowledge that when I got home, it would end. In these days of being able to upload videos directly from your mobile to YouTube, and that video then being available world-wide almost instantly, I’m not sure how I would have coped.
If you have any thoughts on the matter, please do let me know. If you are experiencing problems, there are many resources out there to try and help you through tough times, and if you want to leave a comment anonymously, your identity won’t be revealed.

Oh, and before I forget, to any ex-Pates pupils reading this, there is a re-union planned this July for those who left in 1997 (or started in 1990, in case you left after GCSEs). The organization is being co-ordinated mainly by Jarv, and you can see the details on facebook. I can’t remember the specific URL off-hand, but I’ve setup a re-direct from www.pates.tk .
The advert you’ll see doesn’t benefit me at all, it is placed their by the guys that run the .TK domain administration. (You can register a domain for free, as long as you don’t mind the adverts.)
