  • Kazakhstan 2017

It appears that Nazarbayev is planning to run again in 2012 and possibly in 2020, according to adviser and apparently defacto spokesperson Yermukhamet Yertysbayev. If he runs and wins, he will rule until 2017, and be 77 years old. According to Yertysbayev, the President would like to see out the industrial-innovation strategy.

  • Medvedev wrote Happy Birthday in Kazakh to Nazarbayev on Twitter

    Medvedev Twitter Makes Some Noise

Some of you may have heard this by now, but President Medvedev of Russia wrote a Happy Birthday congratulations to Nazarbayev on his Twitter feed: Interesting that they provide an English-language translation of his feed, suggesting that either the feed is more for foreigners or that he wishes to appear hip and cool by speaking […]

  • Nothing Happened

So despite the rumors, another Astana Day/President’s Birthday passed and 1) Nazarbayev did not step down or announce his plans to do so, 2) Massimov, the Prime Minister, was not dismissed, 3) No ministers were fired or radical new reforms to the government announced. The two most exciting things to happen were the opening of […]

  • Leader of the Nation Law Passed

As predicted, the Leader of the Nation law entered into force [RUS] quietly this morning. Interestingly, the Kazakhstan Today article as republished on zona.kz spends a lot of time defending the legality of the law, noting that everyone who should have signed it, did in fact sign it. Except the President. The article goes on […]

  • How to Write About Kazakhstan

I am taking up a gauntlet here in response to a great post on Registan.net about How to Write About Afghanistan. First, mention Borat. If the article is about some problem or something that seems funny then refer to Kazakhstan as “Boratland”, “the home of Borat”, or “Boratistan”. Otherwise, if the article is about say […]

  • The Unstylish Need Not Apply

Two weeks ago, the President announced that, “Residents of Astana should look like residents of the capital. The inhabitants of Astana themselves agree the capital should be at the level of world capitals, including in fashion. There are many stylish clothes in the shops However, by their own admission, not all residents try to take […]

  • Obama and Nazarbayev Did Discuss Zhovtis

A more detailed look at the meeting between Obama and Nazarbayev from Joshua Kucera indicates that Obama did bring up Zhovtis and other human rights issues in some detail. And McFaul, Obama’s advisor on Eurasia and Russia on the National Security Councilapparently did not intend to indicate that Obama was overly soft on Kazakhstan and […]

  • Propaganda

They’ve done it before and they’ll do it again. President Nazarbayev and President Obama both attended a nuclear summit this weekend and Nazarbayev managed to get some private time with Obama. Obviously this is a big chance for Kazakhstan to promote its “brand image” in the world and for the President to gain more popularity […]

  • Kazakhstan Reacts to Events in Kyrgyzstan

Two articles on Kazakhstan’s reactions to events. First, Kanat Saudabayev, Minister of Foreign Affairs and chairman of the OSCE, is sending his Special Envoys to Bishkek [RUS], Zhanikbek Karibzhanov, who is deputy speaker of the Mazhilis of Kazakhstan as well as chairman of the Kazakh-Kyrgyz Interparliamentary group. Herbert Zalberg, Director of the OSCE Center for […]

  • If You Make 70 Gifts for 70 Years, I’ll Fire You

In another part of the President’s speech yesterday he noted that gift-giving is something that has to stop. Nursultan Nazarbayev noted that there is no budget item for gifts for fellow civil servants and threatened to report people who give too many gifts:
Gazeta.kz quotes the President, “Accounts Committee, regularly reports to me about the most serious violations. People buy expensive cars, expensive electronic devices and begin to furnish their offices, buying expensive furniture. It’s a waste of everything.”
