We Inconvienenced You, Now We Kill You
Terminal Inconvenience. The way this sign reads, it looks like someone forgot to secure that giant boulder onto the roof and it’s about to fall off onto your head.

Do Not Trust This Penguin
If he is to believed, Dom Joly is the darts champion of Kazakhstan. Dom Joly, who is most famous for his Trigger Happy TV candid-camera-on-crack show, is more of a comedian than a serious travel journalist so I assume that article is a joke, but you never know. Out of curiosity, was anyone at the […]

Someone Reads My Blog and FAIL Blog
I reported on this headline translation fail yesterday (Passing Gas is Kazakhstan’s Property) and it’s already up on Fail Blog. So who did it? Confess in the comments.

Headline Translation Fail
Passing gas is Kazakhstan’s property. I believe they meant to say “transporting natural gas”. By the way, does this article make Kazakhstan Today liable for embarrassing the President? After all, they did make it sound like he discussed flatulence. And the fact that Kazakhstan is behind in the farting gap: “Passing gas is not mentioned in any of the contracts, or in the production sharing agreement. Some countries have already done it”

Clean Up Your Act
I only post this Reuters story from Russia because it’s so funny and because it gives you an insight into the post-Soviet mentality. When a big man is coming, see how painstakingly people go over their city or school or home. Theater posters proclaiming “We await you, merry gnome” were taken down from a Russian […]

Peace Corps in Kazakhstan Over the Holidays
Found a bunch of great posts by Peace Corps volunteers all over Kazakhstan about their preparations for Christmas, their frustrations and hopes. Thought it made for interesting reading. How do expats deal with living in a country where one of their culture’s major holidays is not celebrated? And how do the holidays get Kazakhified? So […]

You’re so Funny. Not.
Ok, what was the point of this piece: You Get One Piece of Carrion Luggage? It takes a picture of Kazakhs hunting with hawks and makes a really stupid joke. So what’s the best domestic airline for getting from place to place [in Kazakshtan -KZBlog]? There is one small one that’s kind of unusual. They […]

NSFW in Russian-speaking offices
Some creative photography used in a park in Karaganda via NewEurasia. It’s pretty clever and also funny, but definitely not to be opened with Russian speaking colleagues looking over your shoulder. So when you’re alone, click here! Even though jokes aren’t funny when you have to explain them, I will say that the word in […]

Work That Cough
While the number of people wearing masks in Astana out of fear of the swine flu has gone down considerably (see here and here for Chris Merriman’s pics of maskopolooza), I still see the occasional mask. And you never know when the next scare will come along. That’s why a Kazakh fashion studio in Semipalatinsk […]

The President is Now a Water
First it was vodka. Then it was the political party Nurotan. Then it was half the buildings and complexes in Astana, adding a Nur to their name. Now it’s table water. I was surprised to see Nureke water in my local store the other day. Nureke is a diminutive form of names that begin with […]
