What to Expect
One Peace Corps Volunteer put up a series of posts on what to bring to Kazakhstan, what you need to know, and other advice. Now these are targeted for PC volunteers so they may not apply to tourists or diplomats planning to come live in Kazakhstan, but they are an interesting point of view so […]

The 9th of May and the Asian Front
Kazakhnomad has an interesting post up on the story of a Kazakh veteran who fought on the Asian front. I was not aware that the USSR fought in the Pacific, but I stand corrected. The war against Germany gets a lot more attention here whereas in the US both the European and Pacific front are […]

Back in Brooklyn
Just wanted to note that one of my favorite bloggers in the Central Asian blogosphere, Miss Talibonita, has some new posts up. She tends to find a lot of great pop culture stuff from the region. But her most recent post is on how Uzbeks are such good cotton pickers. Racism is unfortunately endemic to […]

The Tweaking is Over
This entry is really a changelog of the tweaks I’ve made to the site over the past few days and what I still want to do. If you’re not a blog designer there’s really no reason to read the rest of this entry. If you are a blog designer and can help me figure out how to get the rest of my to-do list done, I’ll love you forever.

PSA for Website Owners
If you have no idea what Google page rank is and don’t care, read no further.
For the rest of you, just a quick note that I had been using a page rank checker from Pagerankbar.com and it has been showing a rank of 0 for this page. Haven’t questioned that up until today when I thought I would check out the Google toolbar. Turns out I have a rank of 3. No idea whether the problem is with pagerankbar.com or my domain or Wordpress coding or what. Anyway, just wanted to share that the widget here is not working in case you have similar problems.
And yes, I am really proud that my page rank is so high, not that I pay too much attention to such things, but it can’t hurt.

End of the Year Stats
A round up of stats for this domain and most popular posts, and so on. Partially posting this for my own benefit, so I have something to refer to next year! All stats are from Google Analytics even though Alexa and other sources do disagree slightly. This blog at this site is officially 42 days […]

Twas the Night Before Rozdestvo
Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the land/Not a single soul cared, for this was Kazakhstan/No stockings were hung by the fire at all/For fear they would burn if they would fall.
Great parody of A Visit by Saint Nick by a Peace Corps Volunteer, K-Chuck -
Dear Russian-speaking Spammers
Why do you make spammy comments only on one post: 2007 Address to the People of Kazakhstan? Is it because it’s the possibly the only post I have with Russian in it? Or maybe, even though these comments invariably say something like, “Yes I agree” or, “A good idea” to a post reporting on a […]

Blogspot?
Usually when people in Kazakhstan write that a website is not working and possibly being blocked, I accuse them of paranoia. I don’t have Kazakh Telecom Interent service so I have yet to meet a blocked site. However, my own paranoia is growing over sites on the blogger/blogspot service. For a few days now I […]

Retire Abroad
Retire Abroad is a surprisingly useful resource for expats. Although it’s targeted at people looking to retire to another country, it has great information and resources about life in general as well as statistical trends and stories. I was very interested in seeing where Kazakhstan and other countries stood in the Gini coefficient (income inequality) […]
