Obama and Nazarbayev Did Discuss Zhovtis
A more detailed look at the meeting between Obama and Nazarbayev from Joshua Kucera indicates that Obama did bring up Zhovtis and other human rights issues in some detail. And McFaul, Obama’s advisor on Eurasia and Russia on the National Security Councilapparently did not intend to indicate that Obama was overly soft on Kazakhstan and […]

Propaganda
They’ve done it before and they’ll do it again. President Nazarbayev and President Obama both attended a nuclear summit this weekend and Nazarbayev managed to get some private time with Obama. Obviously this is a big chance for Kazakhstan to promote its “brand image” in the world and for the President to gain more popularity […]

In another part of the President’s speech yesterday he noted that gift-giving is something that has to stop. Nursultan Nazarbayev noted that there is no budget item for gifts for fellow civil servants and threatened to report people who give too many gifts:
Gazeta.kz quotes the President, “Accounts Committee, regularly reports to me about the most serious violations. People buy expensive cars, expensive electronic devices and begin to furnish their offices, buying expensive furniture. It’s a waste of everything.” -

Just an interesting article I came across the other day, Nazarbayev tries to set an example by personally taking an interest in Kazakhstani films [RU]. The President plans to visit movie theaters and watch Kazakh movies in order to […]

Another Library?
Registan is reporting that they are building a national library in Astana. We already have a Presidential Library and an Academic Library, both of which are very good as well as the National Archive. So what role will the National Library play? Besides being another futuristic funky looking building? Or boosting the construction industry? From […]

The proposed law on religion in Kazakhstan has been declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Council, whose primary function is to rule on the constitutionality of draft laws. Police Crackdown on Protests; Court Shows Restraint
Housing problems in Almaty are nothing new. Real estate prices are incredibly high and cheaper housing is destroyed to make room for new and inevitably high-priced development complexes. A number of regions on the outskirts are home to squatters who are forcibly ejected and denied compensation, or given inadequate compensation, when the land is marked […]
