If the UK Were in Central Asia
First of all, I have no interest in belittling what is happening in London right now in any way. However it struck me that were riots of this scale happening in Central Asia, every article would likely mention the following talking points
- The UK, while relatively democratic, is still technically a monarchy. It also lacks a written Constitution, unlike most modern democracies. In fact its freedoms are based entirely upon an archaic document written in the 13th century.
- While there is no sign that nationalism or ethnicity play a role in these riots, the United Kingdom consists of four ethnic nations with their own histories but all dominated by Anglo-centric England. Ireland in particular is known for ethnic strife, and Scotland has made some bold strides toward independence in recent years.
- The UK is known for its close ties to the US.
Anything I missed?
-although religious minorities openly practice their religion in the UK and the government claims to protect the freedom of religion, anglicanism remains the official religion of the country. it is still not clear what role anglican fundamentalism plays in the current strife.
Good one.
