Second Grader’s Case Thrown Out
An update on my post, Second Grader Sues Ministry. Apparently, the filing was rejected although I can’t find news of this online.
However in searching, I found a report on Khabar news and this follow up Book publisher at fault [RU]. Apparently the Ministry of Education never approved this book. The publisher has admitted that he illegally indicated the book was approved by the Ministry and has agreed to take on all expenses for reprinting the textbook without errors. An investigation is under way of all textbooks on road rules now.
Now, if this is the case, we have another question. How did a book that was not approved by the Ministry of Education end up in the schools? Can anyone claim to have approval and sell their books to schools? It seems hard to believe in a land where bureaucracy is widespread that there is no process of checking the list of approved books with the Ministry itself!
I SO had my fingers crossed this would happen. If only more frivolous lawsuits would be thrown out in the US more often =/
Yeah, but as a way of drawing attention to problems with textbooks in Kazakhstan, I support it. Shouldn’t go to court but it’s good guerrilla theater. I’ve seen some of the textbooks for English and they are full of mistakes, misunderstandings, and the style is still very grammar and rules focused instead of communication focused.
I suppose you’re very right. Like the cases involving millions of dollars over hot coffee spilling in someone’s lap, it isn’t as much about the millions of dollars as it is to bring about awareness and maybe change. About the grammar and rules – I know what you mean first hand.
Hopefully this story will be revisited again and books will be more thoroughly checked! :fingerscrossed:
