You were mugged in Kazakhstan?
Any regrets about moving to Kazakhstan?
To be honest, I was asking for it. It was near the holidays, I was coming out of a nightclub drunk and alone. The mugging was very civil and efficient. They pretended to be police asking for my documents. When I took out my passport, they took it and then kept taking things out of my pockets so when I was trying to get one thing, they were grabbing something else. In the end, they took all my big bills but left me with cab fare back and disappeared into the darkness. If one must be mugged, it’s as good as you can ask for. No threat of violence. And they didn’t take anything but cash.
Like any big city, Astana or Almaty is safe if you aren’t careless.
