Teacher Asked Not to Wear Hijab
I wrote earlier about an apparent ban on wearing hijabs in schools. However the plot thickens. A teacher is appealing to the Prosecutor’s Office for permission to wear a headscarf.
Aida Dekebaeva, a geography teacher in Taldy-Kurghan was told by the principal of the school not to wear a hijab, after the school adopted a new dress code. Dekebaeva is waiting for the General Prosecutor to reply to her letter but she says she is ready for “a long-term fight”.
All the best to this brave woman.
Is Kazachstan not secular?
Kindest
Kazakhstan is secular, but at the same time it is trying to tolerate and respect all religions. Culturally it is also a Muslim state–in the same way European countries are culturally Christian. So it is trying to balance its Islamic heritage with tolerance of all religions. Like the US or Turkey, or pretty much any country in the world, Kazakhstan is finding it hard to hit a perfect happy medium that makes everyone happy.
