2010 Queen’s Birthday Party
Temporarily away from Anna’s photos, it looks as though I only posted pictures and videos from my phone last year at the Queen’s Birthday Party. Last year was when I discovered that manhole covers in Astana aren’t necessarily actually stable. After a few drinks, walking home with Ira, I managed to half disappear down a maintenance shaft, removing a fair amount of skin but somehow not ripping my suit trousers!
Anyway, back to the event itself, it was well attended, and I believe the first to be hosted by our (then) new Ambassador, who delighted some in the crowd by re-instating a tradition that QBPs are not weighed down by long winded speeches, but instead the focus should be good music, food, drink and company, to celebrate the Queen’s birthday. It looks as though I didn’t manage to grab any shots of John. Apologies.

Random Tanya Meeting
This is just a quick post – the next day (16th of May 2010) saw all Irina and Anna go for a walk in Astana Park, which is just across the road from us, before heading to the shops for shoes. Back then that sort of “walk” nearly always needed the pushchair to be taken along. When you’re living on the fourth floor with no lift, we were already looking forward to a time when Anna could handle walking around under her own steam for a bit longer. Anyway, they met Ira’s friend Tanya in the area just over the pedestrian footbridge, and took a quick shot. The tall buildings in the background (Grand Alatau) are where Interhouse is based, though I’m not sure if I was already working there by then?

Chaser Becomes The Chasee(e?)
Arrrrgh. Someone remind to get back to tagging posts sometime soon. Please? Back down to about 25% of the posts with proper (checked, not just auto-generated) tags again! Anyway, the final post from the 15th of May 2010, again at Ali Ba Ba with DanC’s family and Walton. Can’t honestly remember right now if Assel managed to make it over, or if she was busy at work.
Anyway, looking back at this video now, it is really cute to see Anna tottering around, still not totally stable on her feet. At one point it looks as though Anna is attempting a game of Kiss-Chase with Aidan, which given his reputation with girls, is quite the turn around!
In case you’ve not been before, this video gives a small glimpse as to how Ali BaBa looks, though you’ll need to return to the previous post to get an idea of how the side tables look.

Ali BaBa With Aidan And Anna
Still on the 15th of May 2010, we have a meeting between Aidan (DanC’s son) and Anna. Their date was at Ali BaBa (see 12 posts ago), which coincidentally meant their parents and Walton could grab a bite to eat and a drink or three. Actually, remembering back almost a year ago, I think Buddy Bears came after meeting up at Ali BaBa, but I can hope you can forgive me a few hours discrepancy with Anna’s pictures? Anyway, we grabbed on of the comfy side tables where you can sit on cushions and Anna and Aidan could lie down and nap if they wanted (ha ha ha, obviously didn’t happen, but it was good to have the option there 🙂 ).

Roos Risking Frosty Frolics
Excuse the break this afternoon from blogging, but I’ve been working on a site for a couple of days, and I wanted to get a basic version up and running so the people running the charity event could take a look. Before customizing the theme too much, I wanted to see how they thought it was coming, to save wasting time on areas that could end up completely different anyway.
G’Day Moscow is the name of the site, and as you may have already guessed from the address, it has an Australian/New Zealand ex-pats in and around Moscow theme to it. The two main sections are on Charity events – G’Day Moscow Ball 2012 and Moscow Cold Plunge 2012. The ball presumably speaks for itself (but do go and proof read it for me if you get a chance, although I didn’t write the content, I’ve been staring at the site for hours now and have most likely missed a few issues here and there), where as the Cold Plunge might require a little further explaining. Or not, if you’ve read the occasional posts on this site about people plunging through holes into the frozen River Ishim here in Astana. The idea is basically the same (if you’ve recently had to have an EKG machine used on you, it might be better to not take the plunge!), except rather than being purely something to do/take photos of, this particular one in Moscow is for people who have gathered sponsorship money.
I still need to alter some colours, look into changing a font, and incorporate some Australian-themed graphics, but as work in progress, I don’t think it is doing too badly so far!
