Talent

Category: VideosChrisM @ 12:51 am

As I write this post, the following video has been watched over 25 million times (and that is just with the original, some of the pointless re-posts on YouTube have had over a million as well!), so it is reasonably likely you’ll already have seen this song.
If Greyson Chance (12 year old boy) singing Paparazzi (a Lady GaGa song) doesn’t ring any immediate bells, click play below now!

I’m glad to see the YouTube comments are now mostly positive, he had a lot of haters on there for a while. OK, so this isn’t the sort of thing I normally post here on ChrisMerriman.com , but the vocal talent (and arrangement skills) of someone so young just blew me away. Some of the girls in the back manage to maintain a totally not interested look throughout, but I’m guessing the blond in the top right might just be interested… Anyway, Greyson tweets and is on facebook, so leave a message of support if you want to show that lip syncing, fame grabbing, talentless media stars (Simon Cowell, you have a lot to answer for) aren’t what impress everybody.

If I were a 12-year-old boy I might assume from his choice of song, that he wasn’t interested in girls. He doesn’t change the pronouns in the song, does he?

So maybe the girls are just suppressing their disappointment.

He does sing get that girl, rather than boy. I’ve checked again.

“Cause you know that baby I”
stays the same, I’d assume baby can be applied in both directions in a M/F relationship.

“But I won’t stop until that boy is mine”
    becomes
“But I won’t stop until that girl is mine”

    hmmm…
“I’ll be your girl backstage at your show”
Seems to be the same still?
You could argue it sounds like
“I’ll be good backstage at your show”
as Greyson does also just plain alter a few other lyrics (instead of papa-paparazzi, we get an elongated raaaaazzi at the end of the word)

He then proceeds to drop eyeliner from “eyeliner and cigarettes” (I wondered what he muted there when singing it, I’d not got around to checking the Lady GaGa lyrics until now.)

“Shadow is burnt yellow dance and we turn”
    seems to become
“Shadow is burnt while you’re dancing with him”, but still mentions purple teardrops. Then again I know quite a few non-gay men that have worn makeup 🙂

Finally, he seems to skip out the “Real good we dance in the studio” verse completely.

Anyway, if I were a girl his age, I’d not be put off by the lyrics 🙂

As for the choice of songs, it might not be the most macho thing to belt out, but he isn’t gliding around like Freddie Mercury, Right Said Fred, or Johnny Ray 🙂

I thought I heard him once say, “I’ll be your girl” but it seems like most of it he did change.

In my school the slightest oddness could lead to ostracization, especially wearing purple makeup!

I kept my purple colouring to my hair whilst at school. One of those shampoo in gradual over time changes, so it didn’t jump out at the teachers immediately. That combined with a healthy disrespect for full uniform, ear rings and various other debating points meant I had enough to keep them busy. Lipstick/nail varnish was more of a Uni thing I think.

On an unrelated note, he somehow manages to look like Light from Death Note (yes, I know I stain my good name and am considered weeaboo from now on).

If only he considered eating some potato chips to be totally awesome…

    • ChrisM says:

I can sort of see what made you think that…

      Potato chips? Crisps? 🙂
And as for Weeabo, it could be worse, you could be infatuated with American culture ;-P

      • Oleg Frantsuzov says:

Indeed I am; where do you think those potato chips come from? Actually that was a reference to tvtropes, see the page on Death Note, trope Crowning Moment of Awesome.

        • ChrisM says:

HA. I’m not falling into that trap again. Every time I check out a page on tvtropes, I find myself still there the next day, just looking up “one more” interesting looking thing.

          • Oleg Frantsuzov says:

One can easily become a hermit for a while, exile oneself from the society and read all the tvtropes wiki. And to be finally immune to this evil.

@Oleg, discovered the max. depth of threaded comments currently in place 🙂
I wasted a few evenings simply clicking on a few links there that interested me, and ended up with around 25 tabs open at the same time 🙂
I got to the point where I forced myself to only finish reading each open page, and not click any new links in any of them.
