Alas, as I suspected only Australian citizens can join cos you have to be able to vote. It will be another couple of years or so until Mat and I can do this.

  2. ChrisM says:

I was thinking a little bit bigger than that – I’d been hoping you might just know a few ‘real’ Australians, and could encourage them to think about joining up. Maybe they could speak to some of their friends, etc. etc. and we could help get the party closer to their required membership number.

  3. Alex C says:

Ahh, ok. Well it involves a $20 joining fee which is going to put anyone off that isn’t really serious. I don’t know any Australians that are into computers or downloading etc etc that much and all in all it’s less than likely. However, I will ask around πŸ™‚

  4. ChrisM says:

$20, wow are all your friends just as tight-walleted as you then πŸ˜‰ Please do ask around, seems a shame to see a fledgling party with a strong (albeit pretty much mono) view on something.
In case any of your friends are almost interested, but think it is a joke, the following facebook comment summarizes situation well, in EU at least.
Oh yes they are. Swedish Pirate Party has two members in EU parliament. (!) German PP collected almost one million votes few months ago. And here in Finland our pirates are starting to prepare themselves for 2011 elections. So I think Aussies are serious too. πŸ˜›

For any readers from this site not used to facebook, the link you really want is probably http://torrentfreak.com/aussie-pirate-party-to-shake-up-politics-down-under-091201/ , and a good quote from there is
β€œWith this small but significant step, we will be one step closer to providing Australian electors with the option of voting β€˜Pirate’ at the next Federal election, to fight for a fairer and more balanced copyright, greater innovation and access to culture, information and knowledge, greater government transparency and the protection of our civil liberties,” the Party announced.

Finally, Alex, something both of you CAN do even over there is sign the following – http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/dontdisconnectus/ . Disconnecting people because their internet connection has allegedly been used to share copyrighted content, with no hint of a fair and legal trial, is yet more Mandy Madness. Will try and write a proper post on it soon.
