Personal Number Plates

(UK relevant)

Unlike some American states, in Britain you can not have completely customised car number plates. So whereas you could have something like ‘TooCold2Hold’ in USA, that just is not possible in UK.
However, the numbering system used with our registration plates means there are some possibilities, especially if you are prepared to use ‘5’s as ‘S’s, ‘1’s as ‘I’s etc. (Note to any net l33t speakers - you were by no means the first to popularise such character substitution schemes!

For example, one plate often quoted in the press is MAG 1C - as in magic. This sort of plate is from two generations ago, when you had three letters to signify where in the country it was registered, a number, and then the year it was registered (in this case ‘C’). There are some examples of car number plates older than that scheme, such as AB0007 (good for any Canadians in Britain ;) ) or ACE001 but these are normally a lot more expensive. Any plate that has three letters at the end, such as A1 ZIP are much more modern, and hence more readily available. Finally, since 2001, the car number plates system changed and we now have plates that looks like AS55 KIS.

So with all the possibilities that private number plates offer, why not check out Northumbrian Number’s web site, and see if any car registrations interest you? They have a system where you can enter your desired word or initials, and the database will be searched for number plates that closely resemble, or contain it.

They also have a lot of relevant information on the process of buying and transferring car number plates, so should you have any questions, you may well find they are already answered!
