No ignition switch, no 3rd gear, a boot that flew open at the slightest tap from inside the car, and drank 8 litres of water a day.
It only cost $100, and we needed a car for my job at the time (touring the South-West of Britain, installing and repairing credit card machines).
So, it was cheap, it needed ‘hot-wiring’ every time you started it, couldn’t overtake on the smallest of inclines, need a good run-up to cope with a hill, regularly dumped all its water on the road when waiting in a queue, and on one memorable occasion, dropped $6,000 worth of equipment on to a busy dual-carriageway outside Bath.
If I’d lived in America or Canada at the time, I would have done so much better if I’d looked at www.LemonFree.com. (For those not familiar with the term, it indicates a car that will end up costing you a lot more than you paid for it, in terms of repairs etc.)
The site enables you to either search using simple parameters - cost, year made & make + model or if you want to get really specific, you can refine the search further by price and mileage.
They also helpfully split up the adverts into regions, so if you’re a NY resident (Hi Tom, you still reading this blog?) you can simply go to Used Cars New york.
I was impressed by the speed of the site, and with most makes, there was a lot of choice on offer.
The other impressively helpful & honest features that I noted were the automatic inclusion of any recalls affecting certain makes & models, listed next to each car for sale, and that listing your car with the site is free!
So the next time you’re looking for Cars For Sale try out LemonFree.
