John wants to setup a proper web site soon, and we have spoken a little about his needs, when it comes to hosting. Until the potential site grows, he can easily used a shared server environment. However, Virtual Private Servers are the next step up on the ladder of hosting.
The main improvement over shared hosting (where one server can be hosting dozens and dozens of sites from many different customers), from my point of view, is the root access provided (meaning that any particularly techy requests John had would be a lot less likely to require the interaction of the hosting company’s technical support department. When it comes to reliability, the fact that each account has their own virtual server within one main server means that other people’s websites should not have a detrimental effect on your own.
Combine all this with the fact that the allowances start at 10Gb of disk storage and 50Gb internet traffic per month, and you can see why when people get serious about their web site, they tend to move on up to VPS. You basically get all the benefits of your own dedicated server, without the costs that paying for your own server entail.
So, if your current shared server is showing the strain when you have a high volume of traffic, or you find the constraints placed upon your access are limiting the direction you want to take your site in, check the Network Solution link above to see just how they could help you.

Root access can be quite dangerous. I’d rather stick to my shared hosting with tech support guys handling my requests.
Ah, and by the way. My personal site has got a domain name. You’re welcome to http://warmland.ru — now with RSS.

Root access can be dangerous, but it can also be damn useful, a couple of times I’ve needed it to carry out some modifications for this site, but had to contact my tech support guys to do the work for me.
Your site is duly noted, I’ll throw up a post linking to it sometime this week, as you don’t appear to be in Google’s index yet.

My site is in Russian. Alas, I don’t think I’ll be able to post anything in English there. Henceforth, to most of your readers it will be of little interest.
It would be the most kind of you to post a link. Even though Googlebot had been observed at my site, its visit had little positive consequences. And I have no idea of how to lure it there again.
