True, the American govt. would have kept their condemnations purely within diplomatic channels, I'd imagine.

The thing I find disturbing is the magnitude of the response from the Russian government, and with it the sense that Russia still feels it has a right to intervene in Estonia's affairs. I can't imagine even the US government staging such protests, or making so many aggressive comments, if Canada (which in terms of history, culture and relations, is really a brother to the US) were to do something similar.

Damn, you're right. I just hate all this "we're so innocent and they're doing bad things" crap coming from both sides.

I guess people will have different opinions regarding this, and as I feel no fealty to Russia or Estonia, I'm not about to start judging.

I think we all can say that the past is over. :)

And currently Estonia is somewhat oppressive to Russian-speaking people. So at least some Russians hate Estonia. And, more important, my point was that IF Estonia chose to move the monument, the should have foreseen the consequences, SO NOW they shouldn't cry and moan about their sites being attacked.

True; however to people in the West, and I'm supposing European leaning Estonians, the Soviet times were seen as oppressive, and the statue did not just stand for heroic Soviet soldiers dying to protect a region of the USSR, but also an invading force who took away Estonia's self-identity.

I don't care about the monument… but Estonians should have worried about what people may think. Now they ought to face the consequences. One can argue whether moving the monument was okay or not, but again, Estonians knew at least some people would be in rage.
