Links

I’ve moved the blogroll and other links all on to this page, as the amount was getting too large to display on the front page.

First we have the blog roll - pretty much general links

Here we have the list of other Kazakh themed blogs…

Now these are the original links from this page

  • www.wordpress.com - The blogging system this site is based on
  • www.atomatom.tk - An old personal site, no longer updated, and pretty ugly looking since I ruthlessly ripped out the frames it originally used
  • www.mattg.com - The man, the site :> Friend back in Cheltenham, who taught me everything I know (not much yet ;>) about Google AdSense and a fair few other topics
  • www.johnkavanagh.tk - Another WordPress-based site, by a good friend. If the link is down, you can try the true url - http://johnkavanagh.wordpress.com
  • www.scorpionsat.org - I use it for learning about, and upgrading our Metabox satellite receiver, but it covers many brands, satellites and countries
  • www.lyngsat.com - Very useful for anyone setting up/updating their satellite system. You can find out about which channels exist on certain satellits. This won’t be of much use to Sky customers in the UK, but if you either have a 2nd dish, a motorised system, or don’t live in the UK, there is plenty to help you here
  • www.sat-digest.com - A collection of useful, satellite-based, links
  • www.ebuyer.com - No affiliate scheme, so I don’t get anything from them for the link, but if you’re UK based, and either want cheap and cheerful IT gadgets, or to check if they’ve a lower price than your local high-street/retail park IT shop for a certain make and model, give them a try
  • TheGreyArea - A place to learn, help or just kick back and relax. I’ve used it for years now, and always find something of interest there. If I’ve ever had to explain something to you, like how to check or fix something, I’ve probably already referred you there.
  • www.ripe.net - Have an IP address, and want to know who it belongs to? Head over there then
  • www.whois.net - Alternatively, if you’ve a domain name, and want to check who is behind it, this is one of the places to go
  • www.froogle.co.uk - OK, so they hardly need my personal recommendation, but a surprising number of friends don’t think to check there for availability/pricing on their future toys
  • portableapps.com - If you own a thumb drive, and often use other people’s PCs, this site could be of interest to you. Its a listing of programs (sometime custom modified) that can be run from a thumb drive, meaning you don’t need to install anything on the host PC
  • www.damnsmalllinux.org - In a similar(ish) vein, DSL (Damn Small Linux), and its sibling, DSL-N (Damn Small Linux - Not!) are entire operating systems, trimmed and tweaked to be run from a thumb drive, or CD. I’ve not tried it yet, but hope to use it as the basis of a very fast booting media centre setup. Full credit to a friend at TheGreyArea for pointing me in this direction :->
  • www.wikipedia.org - Need to know something, but can’t be bothered trawling through pages of Google results? This site helps many people
  • WindizUpdate - Useful for people with problems using Microsoft’s Windows Update service
  • www.peekvid.com - Useful if you’ve missed your favourite TV show. Broadband a must, really
  • www.kontraband.com - If you find the fake adverts, often sent out in e-mails to friends, who then pass them on to their friends etc., (virals), funny, then check out the content on this site. A bit hit and miss, but worth a shot when you’re bored
  • TheOnion.com - Not to everyones tastes, but sometime quite funny fake articles
  • www.torrentspy.com, www.isohunt.com and www.demonoid.com - You’ll need a BitTorrent client installed on your PC/Mac for these sites to be of any use, and please ensure you only ever download material that isn’t copyrighted. You’ll need to sign up for an account at Demonoid
  • Free Download Manager - If you are on dial up access to the internet, or want to get the maximum bytes/sec on broadband, consider giving Free Download Manager a try
  • DotTK - A free domain name provider (for private individuals). Ideal for a personal website, where it isn’t the end of the world if you lose the rights to the name. If your traffic in a 90 day period falls below 25 visitors, for example, the domain will be taken away. You can use this domain to practice with web sites, without having to spend any money. Let me know if you need a hand with it
  • HWNic.com - The company I use for registering domain names. Nothing too fancy, prices not too bad. Just make sure you check which boxes are ticked during the purchasing process
  • www.guru3d.com - The place to go for nVidia and aTI downloads, both official driver updates and beta releases can be found here. You’ll also find useful tools for tweaking your rig
  • crazyegg.com - One for the web site owners out there. If you have access to your site’s code, and don’t mind adding a line or two, this is a system that can show you viasually, the hot spots on your site’s pages. You can view the data in different ways, my favourite is the colour maps, so you know which areas are being ignored and may get better coverage if moved elsewhere…
  • www.glop.org/starforce - A cause close to my heart - Boycott Starforce. Some games have copy protection systems in them. Starforce is considered the worst by many. In my own experience, I bought a fully legal game that had this protection system, and eventually my DVD burning(!) speeds dropped to an abysmal level… Interested? Read more at the site, including how to remove the drivers from your PC - not just the normal Add/Remove programs I’m afraid…
  • vivien.chappelier.free.fr/typhoon/index.html - One for the true geeks amongst you - how to install Linux on your Windows-powered SmartPhone!
  • Prad.de’s Ghost test - Nothing super-natural, just a simple way to check if your flat screen monitor is exhibiting ghosting
  • www.gpureview.com - Very useful page, you can directly, and easily, compare two different graphcis cards, to check if it is worth upgrading, basically
  • www.wunderground.com - A website to check what the weather WAS for a requested area; the example given here is Astana, in the month Ira and me were married.
  • www.warninglabelgenerator.com - Silly site, create your own warning signs. Good for a laugh…
  • www.seochat.com - Very useful for anyone interested in Search Engine Optimization

Still to come links to the theme, widgets & plugins used on this site. (Going to wait for the site’s design to settle in first.) I’ve now added a separate page for links to plugins and code used on this site - click on the Extras link that is at the top of all pages.
