Thanks for all the comments. Just in case the fool ever returns and sees this post, I should probably point out that he was apparently plugging a site for personal reasons, not for profit.
Found the same comment published elsewhere, with the same typos. Makes it a lot easier to search for duplicate comments I guess.
I should hold my hands up at this point, and confess that I have blatently plugged my other sites on blogs before. Difference is I've never even raised an eyebrow when the comment was not published.
Ta again to all those who commented so far, and to those that 'dugg' the post (check out the Share This link <img src="http://www.chrismerriman.com/wp-content/plugins/share-this/share-icon-16x16.gif" alt="" /> if you want to do so yourself.)

Hi Chris

You were man enough to respond to him to explain why you can't publish his comment, yet he turned the table on you? I can't believe it!

You were right to stand firm, that guy should just loosen up and cut everyone some slack!

If you think of a blog as like a newspaper, which is not an unreasonable comparison imho, then this guy basically got upset because you wouldn't let him advertise for free and decided to label it "censorship".

Your blog is a legitimate income source.

You spend time and effort making it high enough quality to be so, so it's reasonable for you to be rewarded for your time and effort.

It's not reasonable for someone else to think they can just use this resource for their own purposes without your permission, and if their actions will potentially cause you financial loss, then it's not "censorship".

just my 2 cents.

Chris I don't think you did anything wrong. Like many who write sponsored posts you made a personal decision to not allow competitor links within the comment area of your sponsored posts. I do the same thing.

Like Marisa, if the comment is written in such a way that I can simply remove the link that was added and it still makes sense I'll do that. If the comment is purely about a competing company and wouldn't look very good in the comment section of the sponsored post even without the link I'll just delete it.

I've even had the companies that I write sponsored posts for come along and gush about the companies services. I guess they're trying to make their product or service look better but I delete those comments too because they look like spam.

I have found with the do follow list that since it's spread (people are copying it and promoting the sites that have higher PR that are on it as "great places to get links" that I've been getting a lot more comments from "websites" on my blog now. Since I have several blogs I can see that they are going around and commenting on each blog so I'm assuming they are hitting the whole do follow list. Those comments I'll often take the link out of too.

We own our blogs. We can do as we please. ;)

I've deleted comments that were too spammy and I've edited out links if they point to a competitor, but left the comment. It all depends.

I think the guy who commented and then got testy needs to chill. Did that happen during a full moon?
