Easter Breads

Category: Anna's PhotosChrisM @ 3:04 am

The 4th of April was around Easter this year (I’m assuming that is Russian Orthodox’s date for Easter, as they still use the Julian calendar for (movable?) feast days). Anyway, it was definitely the 4th of April using the Gregorian calendar, and Anna seemed to like the day, especially when she had her very own iced Easter bread to herself. As you can tell from the photos (caviar anyone? 🙂 ), we were over at Irina’s parents’ house, and although not religious, they do celebrate Russian Christmas and Easter each year. I think that in years past people would hand decorate boiled eggs, but here they are in pretty plastic covers that I’m assuming save a lot of preparation time, meaning more Easter iced bread could be made. I know which I prefer!

Lol, As I started reading this post I felt all eastery and then wondered when easter was and then got a miniscule moment of confusion before the clarity revealed it’s coming up to christmas.
This is a familiar pattern I go through when thoughts of the seasons are sporadically presented to my brain. It just goes to show how strongly the seasons are imprinted onto the accompanying celebrations in the northern hemisphere. I wonder if I will ever get used to this topsy turvy land – I think not somehow.
For example, it’s now well into spring down under, all the birds are mating and plants are awash with bright colours as they burst into flower. May Day feels like it should be round the corner, but no, the majority of the population will be celebrating Halloween next week. No wonder my head is screwed!

Slightly off topic reply to your comment, but your mention of Halloween has reminded me that Karra is still awaiting her debut on Kazakh TV. A friend mentioned that the piece on black cats would quite likely be linked to Halloween on the news programme. Better go and check my TV card is working OK!
