Painswick Church

After a walk around the gardens in Painswick, we popped into a pub and had a nice meal. Following that, we popped into the church across the road and had a look round. The grounds outside have a lot of Yew tress, that have various stories attached to them. Some people believe you can successfully never complete a count of the trees, or that the trees move around the grounds. Other people believe that whenever you plant a new tree to add to the (apparently) 99 trees already there, an old one will die, maintaining the level at less than a hundred already. As we were walking around with Anna, we didn’t have the time (or motivation to be honest!) to actually count them ourselves. Oh, another 14th of March entry by the way.

As I mentioned in the previous video, Dad, Irina, Anna and I went for a walk around a large garden on the 14th of March. Anna managed to walk around quite a lot of the grounds, the rest of the time we took turns in carrying her. She really seemed to enjoy looking at all the different flora around, and other than the fact that the entrance fee was pretty steep it was a pretty good afternoon out. I am already looking forward to when Anna is a little older, and going back there when she can hopefully appreciate it even more. I’m also hoping we’ll be able to go and visit the tree that was adopted for her. We recorded the exact location via GPS, as well as quite a few photos, so we will be able to point out the exact tree to her

Present Time – A Little Delayed

Delayed in two senses. When Nick came up to Evesham (btw big congratulations to him for recently passing his driving test!) he bought the Christmas and Birthday presents that we had not been able to open due to being in Kazakhstan at the time. Even though his son Jack was about to be born, we really appreciated him making the effort and making sure we had some more time together (he also had a job interview in Cheltenham, so the timing was perfect). The second part of the delay? The video of this evening was posted a little over a month ago. I have been very slack recently at posting to this blog, other than occasional tweets. Now that PockeTwit (my preferred Windows Mobile twitter client) isn’t working due to OAuth being required for logins, the site has been quite bare recently. I am hoping to put up a few more posts by the end of the week, and if I can just create 36 hours in a day, I might even manage to post more next week Oh, 12th of March is the date these photos were taken, which reminds me, I need to check if AnnaMerriman.com is still pulling these posts in automatically, and also start manually embedding those videos that don’t make it across.

Käwap Restaurant For Another Birthday Celebration

Another post where I’ve taken a few individual tweets and tidied them into one entry. 11th August was my mother-in-law’s birthday, the day after Ira and my wedding anniversary. We headed on downstairs to the new Azerbaijani restaurant located on the ground floor of our building. We hadn’t tried it before, and there was no one else there during our meal, so we were assured of their undivided attention Losha’s parents (Igor and Natalya) joined us, and over all Anna was pretty well behaved.

First up we have a quick picture of a salad that was ordered. It doesn’t come out so well with a wobbly camera phone shot, but in the middle of the plate is a radish carved into a rose shape. Very pretty. Personally I have no idea how it tasted, as I’m not a huge fan of rabbit food (meat, potatoes and pasta are my favourite core ingredients), but no one seemed to complain.

They didn’t have any highchairs, and after trying to get Anna to repeat her previous good behaviour in such situations, we gave up and grabbed the one from our kitchen.

There was in fact no turkey sashliq despite it being on menu. This has happened in a few places in Astana. If you have your hopes set on a certain dish before you arrive, best to phone ahead and speak to someone first. Otherwise a good selection of various sashliqs (kebabs). We asked for something without any bone or lots of gristle (I love the taste of meat, but hate thinking about the fact that it used to be an animal. If steak wasn’t so tasty, I might have been converted into a vegetarian in another life. That would mean eating vegetables though. Anyway, I digress…). When the kebab arrived, it was on the bone still. The waitress didn’t seem to understand why we were surprised to see bone in a dish she recommended for having no bone.

Considering that the décor and ambience of the place was reasonably up market, the vodka & beer was reasonably priced. The baursaki were tasty, but most definitely reheated to make them seem over fresh. Better than stone cold and greasy to be honest The chicken lyalya (spelling ?) shashliq was tasty. Basically minced chicken shaped into a sort of sausage shape.

At one point Anna seemed to get a bit bored, and decided to get the camera out. I’ve not yet checked the memory card to see the sort of shots achieved.

Finally, during a cigarette break outside, I took a quick picture of the restaurant name. I couldn’t step any further back, so had to take a diagonal shot. Luckily our WiFi signal just reaches downstairs to this point, so I was able to upload some pics without using up my KCell credit

The pizza was lovely, the portion size of the fluorescent green garlic bread was very generous, however it could have done with a bit more actual garlic flavour to it. Continuing with tidying up the multiple tweets into a few posts, this is the last of the phone camera shots from our weekend in Petropavlovsk. Anna is trying to get a peek at something on the table, whilst we were waiting for everyone to arrive.
The food was mostly OK, and one waiter was most definitely Kazakh in his approach to customer service. Friends and family of Aunty Sveta seemed to enjoy themselves, and everyone had nice words for her during the toasts.

On the same day that we saw some friends in Cheltenham (11th of March), we had also set up camp in Evesham, over at my Dad’s house. He seemed very happy to see Anna, and she seemed totally content with the new surroundings to investigate. The year before when Anna had been there, she obviously hadn’t been able to move around really. In case you’re wondering, that is Anna’s little suitcase you can see in the bottom left hand corner there. Always have a good supply of toys with you at all times We were all waiting anxiously to discover whether we would soon have a new niece/nephew / grandson/granddaughter, as my younger brother (Nick) and Roz hadn’t discovered whether they were to be having a boy or a girl, and Nick came down that weekend as he had an interview in the area, and we didn’t know for sure whether we’d be able to cross paths again before our return to Kazakhstan, as for some reason babies don’t always arrive exactly when the doctors guess
Anyway, enough for now, I think there are some photos or videos of Nick still to come.

We did not have long in Cheltenham whilst we were in Britain, and as luck would have it, just before we left race week started, meaning travelling anywhere in the area could suddenly involve hundreds of cars on roads that were designed with about 1/10 of the traffic flow in mind. We did manage to meet up with a few people though, as you can see from the photo below, taken on the 11th of March. We were at Emma’s house and her daughter was a little star, playing with Anna and keeping her entertained

One of the few advantages with living in a flat when you have a baby is that you don’t need to worry about stair gates. I don’t know if you can get them easily here in Kazakhstan, but as soon as Anna was mobile and willing and able to start clambering up a step or two back in Britain, Mum got one. This turned into a great attraction for Anna who wanted to know how to open it. Despite a lot of vigorous shaking, pulling and drafting in Gwen for her expertise, Anna didn’t manage to make it up the stairs. So, here with the final shots taken on the 5th of March, Irina had noticed that Anna was looking quite cute up the stairs at her, so she grabbed the camera. I think it was Irina on the stairs, it might have been me?

Soft Friends

Earlier on in the day (5th of March still) from Anna’s box diving exercise, she had all her soft toys/teddies laid out around the flattened sheep that she loved to roll around on. Whether planning world domination, the intricacies of a double twist with three loops and a pike into the toy box later, or just have a general natter, I wasn’t privy to, but Anna seemed to enjoy having everything laid out in front of her, a theme which continues to this day most mornings; after breakfast she normally extracts most of the toys from her toy box in our flat, just ready for a barely awake Daddy to stumble over. Perhaps world domination starts with small steps?

Moving onto the 5th of March, Anna had day filled with playing with her toys, getting some fresh air in the back yard by the utility room, and after another long walk all the way to the top of the back garden, a little chill out time on a bench. In the evening, her energy not yet drained, she decided to pull all the toys out of the toy box, and have a good look at the bottom of it. Unfortunately she was a little too eager and ended up flipping over and into the box. She recovered very quickly and after a little cry at the shock of finding her world temporarily upside-down, she stayed in the box for a few minutes. Finally deciding it was OK to take a quick snap shot of her, she decided to be upset again, so we put the camera down and gave her a hand out of her impromptu little castle setup.

You’ll have to forgive me if I maybe skip putting 2010 for the rest of the posts today, and if you are new to this blog, and wonder why the date is included, I want Anna’s site to eventually be something we can show to her and say, look, five years ago today, this is how you looked, and what you were doing

I just wanted to write something quickly letting people know about a post over at Celt Photographic (JohnK’s site). It has the picture below this text, and a request to provide a good caption for it. See here.

Sleeping Or Seeking? You Decide...

Before I carry on with the videos from our Fourth of July (American Independence Day) meal with Walton and Assel, here we have a picture from just over four months ago – March the 2nd was when the photo was taken. I can’t quite tell whether Anna fell asleep during her meal, after a hard morning’s work, or simply dropped her cheese and was trying to relocate it. Hopefully Irina can come along and clarify things? Anyway, I noticed I had one Anna photo post, and one Anna video left in my drafts area for some reason. I’ll try and crack on with the rest of the UK based ones soon. We haven’t been taking as many here in Astana, so it shouldn’t take as long to catch up with them.

This time (1st March 2010) we have another Wales top, this time no sports involved, just a simple message… I Love Wales. Also in the shot was another of Anna’s favourite reasons to dive onto the ground and giggle, a big (somewhat flat) sheep. I wonder if vegetarians and/or vegans wear wool? Totally unrelated to the picture really, I realise. Not wearing leather I could understand (obviously the cow has to be dead before you can wear the skin), not drinking milk or eating eggs I can see what objections could be raised (possible poor conditions and taking away hen’s creation chances), but does shaving wool off of a wandering sheep count as cruelty? Any veggie readers, please do let me know. Feel free to stay anonymous if you want to avoid finger pointing/laughs from Kazakh meat lovers.

Although Anna could already feed herself by the 24th of February, back then she was still a little bit more messy by the end of the meal. We also don’t tend to need to worry about using bibs with arms any more
Anyway, still working her way through all her lovely Christmas and Birthday presents, Anna, Gwen and I went for a little walk around the garden, and Anna had her backpack on. The dolly that came with it stayed indoors, perhaps she didn’t think it was warm enough?
Gwen performed her Anna guarding duties well, making sure that no harm came to her. Not quite sure what could go wrong in the back garden, but it was really nice to see Gwen acting protective over Anna.

By this time during our stay, Gwen had learned that Anna didn’t always know how strong she was, or that pulling fur hurt, so Gwen often backed off a little if Anna seemed very energetic. I think our cats should be very grateful to Gwen, as Anna did seem to start to comprehend that little animals should be approached with a bit more care and attention (& less shouting) than previously!

Books And Turkish Planes

This picture was taken on the 19th of February (a couple of days before Anna’s first birthday!), when Anna decided to sort her toy box. By sorting, I mean removing most of the contents, and playing with them, before we came along and decided to put them back in. Anyway, Anna was already seemed very happy with the selection of toys that Mum and John had bought for her in advance, and her presents a few days later simply added to the things for her to press, rattle, shake, hug and investigate.
Feel free to be nosey and check out the books you can find in the living room bookcase, and the Turkish plane reference? Turkish Airlines handed out a pack of things to keep a child occupied on the last leg of our trip back home, and the plane seemed to hold Anna’s interest for a while.

These were shot on the 15th of February, and show a cuddly donkey that Anna spotted, and John bought, on the way back from Heathrow airport to Clydach.

ROTFTD? A bastardization of ROTFL – (Rolling On The Floor Laughing becomes Rolling On The Floor Tackling Donkeys). Anna took a couple of days to become comfortable walking around Mum’s house in Wales (as she had only just started walking unaided back in the more familiar landscape of our flat in Astana). When she had had enough of walking around, she would sometimes totter up to the poor donkey and literally dive onto it…

The 13th of February saw Anna trying the closest alternative to Pelmeni that you can buy in the shops in Britain – Ravioli. It was a kids version (so low in salt and hopefully other things that you should have in moderation), and Anna seemed to enjoy it. I do sometime miss having the sweet tomato sauce when we eat pelmeni over here, but then again tinned ravioli doesn’t really lend itself to frying as well as boiled pelmeni do, so I suppose it is swings and roundabouts.

Midnight Snacks On The Bed

The 12th of February saw us start our journey to Britain. We decided to break the journey by staying overnight in Istanbul. Although we didn’t see much of the city, it was good to finally make it out of the airport. Anna behaved incredibly well, considering the flight lengths, her age, and didn’t seem too bothered by staying the night in a hotel. She had a little picnic on our bed before settling down for the night, and continued to surprise us by being a little sweetie on the flight to Heathrow.
Hopefully she will repeat the trick in just over four days, though this time we are flying straight through to Astana, assuming we manage to make the connecting flight in Istanbul. Anyway this is the last photo of Anna before we hit Britain…

Wrapped Up Furry Well

Just under a week before wel left for Britain, this photo was taken on the 7th of February, with Anna on her sleigh, wrapped up in some old fur coats, as we had not bought the fabric covering that we share between Anna’s sleighs in the in-laws’ house and ours. Irina did tell me a story that involved a small child being wrapped up similarly, but I’ve forgotten the details, and also the Russian term that could be applied to Anna.

An Apple A Day…

Getting back to photos being posted in the order they were shot, here we have one from the 6th of February, the weekend before we left for Britain. Anna has recently really started liking eating apples (one little bite after another all adds up), as well as ecstatically devouring bananas whenever she spots one. Anna is sat on the new playmat/rug for her in the kitchen in that house. She now wears shoes most of the time she is up and wandering about, though we do also try and occasionally ensure there is some bare feet time
