Any Interest In GPS POI For Amsterdam?

Category: AmsterdamChrisM @ 4:38 am

PLEASE SEE THE NEW AMSTERDAM PAGE FOR THE GPS FILES.

As you may have gathered, I recently spent quite a long time collating information on Amsterdam, from which bars serve the best beer (for ChrisD), to which CoffeeShops (CSs) sell the best, ermmm, coffee (?). Anyway, part of this process involved me using the forums I previously posted about, a fair few Google searches, Google Earth and anything else I could lay my hands on to discover the exact locations of the good CSs, in terms of Latitude and Longitude. Once entered into Google Earth, I exported them as KML files, and imported them into the GPS Tuner PDA application I mentioned a while back. Now I have nearly completed this stage, would there be any interest from this blog’s readers in those files? I still need to tidy up the names, if they are to be used by other people, but I can’t be bothered, TBH, if there is no interest. So, I’ll give it a fortnight, if you would rather not publicly state your fondness of smoking, feel free to e-mail me (addresses are posted on the Contacts page, link at the top here), and I’ll not mention any names if you prefer.
At some point, I will be publishing a summary of the research, including non-smoking-related information, so don’t think this is exclusively for lovers of the green stuff.

This post has received quite a lot of direct hits from the search engines, but no one has left a message… If you want the files to be created and linked here, do leave a msg…

    Hi there!
I certainly would be interested in your POI’s of Amsterdam. Any chance you will share?

  3. ChrisM says:

You have an e-mail winging its way to you (assuming the e-mail address you entered was valid). I’ve not tidied them up yet for public consumption, but you’re welcome to the current raw data.

  4. Sten says:

Going there tmrw and it would be great if I could get hold of this

  5. ChrisM says:

e-mail on its way ๐Ÿ™‚ Need to know which format you want the files in.

  6. HC says:

Hi – going to Amsterdam for the weekend – would love to have POIs for my Garmin unit ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. ChrisM says:

Hope you had a great time, and managed to convert the files I sent in time ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Allen says:

Hi, I would love to have a these – in .gpx please.
    Thanks for sharing!

  9. ChrisM says:

Not at home right now (over at the in-laws), but I’ll get on it when we return later this evening.

  10. ChrisM says:

Over the last couple of years, I’ve had a few requests from people that are compiling their own lists, not necessarily to use as a tourist.
I obviously have no problem with this, but would appreciate a heads up if/when anything is published online, and if the project is of a commercial nature, some sort of credit to be given.
NOT DIRECTED AT ANYONE WHO HAS COMMENTED HERE – I’ve received direct e-mails as well. (And recently, everyone has been upfront and direct as to their intentions ๐Ÿ™‚ )

@Allen – I’ve just sent an e-mail with CoffeeShops, (at one time) smoker friendly restaurants/bars (still possibly of use if they have outdoor seating) and a few miscellaneous ones. Can’t find my more comprehensive list of misc. stuff, sorry.

  11. Trevor says:

I’m interested in your POI for Amsterdam. The only other one I’ve come across is the one here:

    http://www.poi-factory.com/node/12981

  12. ChrisM says:

@Trevor, check the Contact Me page for best communication methods – I need to know what format you want the GPS files in. If you’re not sure, let me know the make and model of your GPS unit, and I’ll check it out for you. Looking at the link, they seem to be quite ‘straight’ venues in Amsterdam, a lot of mine are of the schmoking variety, just in case that makes a difference to you.

  13. Osmund says:

Hi, Iยดm going to Amsterdam this October. Would love to get your Amsterdam POIยดs in GPX format.

    Regards Osmund

  14. Pani says:

Hi there mate i have been looking everywhere for garmin coffee shop poi. You would be my hero if you could help me or point me to right direction. Thanks and keep up good work.

  15. ChrisM says:

@Osmund and Pani – Sorry it took so long, life has been a bit hectic here. I’ll try and find them tonight, and e-mail tomorrow.

  16. ChrisM says:

OK, e-mail sent to both of you GPX and KML files sent, let me know if you need a different format Pani.

  17. AstroMan says:

    Hi !
I’m going to Amsterdam in few weeks and i’m looking for a iGo version of coffee shops POI.
    Do you have it ?

    Thanks !

    AstroMan

  18. ChrisM says:

@Astroman, you’ll have to let me know what format you need the POIs in – there seem to be at least two different varities depending on the age of your iGo. Failing that, or if I can’t convert it for you, let me know if you can convert it yourself, and what format you’d prefer it in then.

  19. AstroMan says:

@ChrisM : Thanks for your answer but i managed to make a POI file by myself with poieditor.com.
    Regards,

    AstroMan

  20. ChrisM says:

@Astroman. No problem, I hadn’t realised you already had the data, and just needed it in a different format.

  21. Paul Fox says:

Hello, I’m taking my wife to Amsterdam tomorrow. We went last year and got lost so i’m taking my Garmin Zumo satnav this time. Your poi file in gpx format would make the day even better

  22. ChrisM says:

@Paul – I’ve sent an e-mail with the GPX files, see the message for more details ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. Yaasar says:

    Hey Chris,

It would be a great help if you can share the POI for amsterdam esp. the coffeeshops. I am using the Garmin Nuvi 715

  24. ChrisM says:

Sorry for the delay Yaasar, I’m not at home right now. If you could let me know the format your Garmin requires, I’ll try and post back on Monday or Tuesday.

  25. Sten says:

    Hi Chris
got your kml file last year, this year i’ll go with my son to A-dam. can you recommend anything besides CS? we will stay in Jordan and rent bikes for a couple of days

  26. ChrisM says:

Did I send just the coffeeshop GPS file, or three different ones? Can’t remember sorry.
Biking over to Haarlem isn’t too far, and the Willie Wortel CS are worth the trip.
Taking the (at least used to be) free ferry from behind Centraal Station across the river shows a side to Amsterdam most of us don’t get around to looking at.
The Anne Frank museum is apparently normally packed, and massive queues.
How old is your son? Wondering what sort of activities/entertainment is OK to suggest ๐Ÿ™‚
Boom Chicago, stand up/improv comedy worth a visit, as is the St. Nicholas boat trips, sign up at the theatre. Run by volunteers, on old cargo barges, you get to go to more places (you can go down narrower and shorter canals), you can bring your own food, drink and schmokes, and it is a lot more friendly.
I’d definitely recommend heading on over to http://lem.localinet.co.uk/phpBB2/ and , if you haven’t already, checking out the various posts in the Amsterdam category on this blog – https://chrismerriman.com/category/amsterdam/

Hmm, there should be loads more suggestions, but my mind is a blank right now.

  27. Nick says:

I am off to Dam in March and have just purchased a garmin hand held gps, so would love as much POI or other gps related info on this city as possible

  28. ChrisM says:

@Nick. Please let me know what format you need the GPS info in – KML, GPX etc., and I’ll send them over.

  29. Nick says:

GPX would be great please Chris

    many thanks

  30. Dick says:

    Hi there,
I would like to make an map of amsterdams cafe and student places of interest; so I am very interested in your .kml file of Amsterdam. Could you be so kind to email it to me?

Do you know where I can find other .kml files, especially about amsterdaM

    thank!

    ByeBye

  31. Guillermo says:

Can you share with me your POI in Amsterdam? I have a Navman f35, but I think I could open any format in my laptop. Thank you very much.

    Guillermo

  32. ChrisM says:

@Dick, my humble apologies, it looks like your comment got stuck in the system whilst I was on holiday in Britain. I am about to send an e-mail with the files now. I don’t know about other sources for kml files, but see the forums I linked in comment 26 – definitely a good place to start.
If the map isn’t just for your personal use, I would appreciate a heads up if/when anything is published online, and if the project is of a commercial nature, some sort of credit to be given.

@Guillermo, I’m sending the files now. I couldn’t easily tell which format your GPS natively handles, so I’m sending KMLs. Let me know if you have any problems converting.

If I get time later today, I’ll put a post/page up with these files.

OK, tidying up the house before friends come over for a birthday meal. I’ll get onto the e-mails in a couple of hours, the post can wait a day or two. It has been almost three years so far anyway ๐Ÿ™‚

    [edit]

OK, the e-mail has been sent to both of you.

  33. ChrisM says:

OK I have put up a quick draft of a page at

    https://chrismerriman.com/amsterdam/

Please visit it for KML files, and other Amsterdam related information. It is currently pretty much a compressed version of the information found in this post and it’s comments.
