Temporary Blip In Blogging

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 7:17 pm

I probably won’t be posting anything for a little while, so please do feel free to get around to looking at some of the older posts here, or maybe checking out some of the static pages linked to at the top.
Anyway, just wanted to leave a quick message so people didn’t think I’d just given up on blogging or something.

Problems With WordPress 2.6, Google Gears And The Flash File Uploader?

Category: WordPressChrisM @ 7:35 pm

Sorry about the long title post, but I wanted to ensure the relevant factors were all included for clarity.

This post will be of interest to anyone who wishes to use the new Google Gears option within WordPress 2.6, or the flash-based uploader for image files etc., but is not able to.

The first thing to check is if your browser’s Flash plugin is up to date. Visit this page, and towards the top, where it states “You have version x,y,z,a installed”, make sure you have 9,0,124,0 or later listed. You may find earlier versions of the Flash plugin will work OK, but if you have a problem, it is best to discount all potential causes step-by-step.

If you are already up to date, or you have upgraded, and the problems remain, then the next thing to check is that you do not have a Flash applet blocker loaded within your browser. If you see a small ‘F’ symbol on pages where others see flash applets, you need to whitelist (allow) your own website for all flash – it is not enough to temporarily allow the flash applet on a case by case basis.

Problems still remain with Google Gears and/or the Flash File Uploader? In which case I’ll bet you a small bottle of vodka that you used the WordPress Automatic Update plugin to upgrade. You will most likely that find two SWF files are missing from your installation. I had this issue which was stopping Google Gears from working. One of the files involved was the media uploader one.
The easiest way to check if this is your problem is to FTP in to your site and look at /wp-includes/js/swfupload/ – if the file swfupload_f9.swf is missing, and also flv_player.swf from wp-includes\js\tinymce\plugins\media\img
is missing, then we have discovered the root of the problem. The solution? Download WordPress 2.6, from here. Extract the files to a temporary directory on your hard drive and manually upload those SWG files to your site in those locations I mentioned.

So this should sort your problems out for your current installation of WordPress. What to do about next time? If you enable your site within your flash blocker add-in before you next use the WPAU plugin, said files should be upgraded fine :)

Information collated from the WordPress support forums – you can see my post here.

Bloggerwave Issues Once More

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 6:00 pm

As you may remember from my last mention of Bloggerwave, they were a little behind in keeping up with their payments. They managed to pay $60 of the $70 that was owed. As the other $10 is from late last year, and I’ve not received any response from them at all, I’ll not be holding my breath.

However, moving onto new issues, bloggers who visit the Bloggerwave site in a FireFox browser will find they are unable to select and therefore copy the image url required for each task. You can either switch to Internet Explorer, or save the page, and open it up in Dreamweaver/FrontPage/Notepad to extract the requried information. A more fundamental error in their system however is found when new bloggers register with their system. When you try to accept a new task, the screen you are taken to does not display any information at all. IF you already have previous tasks completed in their system, this problem does not arise, however as all new members will obviously not have any tasks already in the system, you hit a brick wall. I’ve sent the company another message (after testing the issue with a friend who had just signed up), but their past history of communications makes me believe that the best I can hope for is for the issue to be silently fixed at some point.

Lawns In The Sky

Category: InterestingChrisM @ 4:14 am

Living in a flat (I still find myself using the American term ‘apartment’ far too often these days) means there are some chores that simply don’t ever need to be done. Mowing the lawn, removing the weeds from between the paving slabs on the patio and watering the flowerbeds simply aren’t possible. Similarly, asking for a fence installation quote would seem a little odd as well.

Edward Sells Well

Category: In The Media,KazakhstanChrisM @ 3:31 am

Eursianet.org had an interesting article early last month on the current mayor (Akim) of Astana. There have been stories about that his family was involved in buying a property from a British royal (Prince Andrew – is that the daffy one, or is that Edward? I can never remember) at an above-market price. Mr Tasmagambetov denied the reports completely, and whether they have any basis in truth or not, the article has an interesting look at the possible motive for the release of these reports.

Ooops, forgot to link to the actual article. Apologies to anyone who read this in the last 12 hours…

RealRank vs. Alexa

Category: PersonalChrisM @ 9:37 pm

Last night a friend was asking me the difference between a site’s Alexa rank, and its Izea Realrank, if it has one.
I decided to create a quick post in the hope that it will help others.
First, lets go through the basics…
Alexa rank has been around a long time, and is supposed to give an indication of how popular (in terms of unique visitors, measuring one visit per day per IP) globally, compared to others.
How are these visitors recorded? Well if the page contains an image looking something like this…
Alexa
… then each and every visitor is counted. If the image, or one similar to it is not present, then only visitors with either the Alexa toolbar, or a toolbar with the Alexa code in it, are counted. In either case each visitor is only counted once per day, to prevent unscrupulous webmasters from simply refreshing their own sites all day long. (That isn’t to say there aren’t other ways of gaming the system.)

So, onto Izea’s Realrank… This system is a little different, in that it doesn’t just include raw unique visitors per day. Within the equation for calculating a given sites rank, the pageviews and inbound links that are actually used to arrive at the site. The data is gathered by a snippet of code being inserted into the template for each page of a blog.

Because of the difference between the way the two ranks are calculated, it is entirely possible for two different sites ranks to go in opposite directions within a given time period. For example, below we have a graph representing ChrisMerriman.com’s RealRank, followed by a another graph showing laaneworld.com’s. The third graph is just one combining the two sets of data.

CM Realrank
Other Realrank
Both Realrank

Below we have the same site’s (in the same order – ChrisMerriman.com first, then laaneworld.com)Alexa rank over time. As you can see, the trends are not necessarily transferred from one rank to another…

It Is All Alex’s Fault

Category: Health,InterestingChrisM @ 2:22 pm

I was speaking to a friend last night, asking her how on earth I could try and naturally fit the phrase
blemish acne cream into a post on this blog. She recommended telling a small white lie, and pretending that I once confused a friend’s cream with toothpaste and how the resulting foamy mess did not taste very minty. I explained this was a little far fetched, and that I’d grab some sleep and see if I could come up with a better solution. Apparently not ;)

RSS Feeds

Category: Friends,KazakhstanChrisM @ 5:36 am

Following on from the last post, I have recently got around to re-adding most of my favourite RSS feeds, following the last hard drive failure. So, check these out sometime and let me know if you want to recommend any others. (If there is no comment feed listed, it is because there is none listed on their site, and I was unable to guess the correct URL.)

I’ll add the feed URL for Alex’s Dryad Musings blog once we have her hosted somewhere properly – the free hosting’s required adverts inserted at the top of each page currently ruin the feed.

Whilst you’re checking out and possibly adding those feeds to FireFox/your favourite RSS reader, don’t forget this blog’s feed and comment feed.
